Rock music has many songs in it's history written using itself as a subject.
I'll bet disco, hip hop and rap also do this...but possibly not as often.

Lloyd, great call on 'American Pie.'
I hate that they play this one Don McLean song to death, the man has done some wonderful songs. 'Castles in the Air' being my favorite.
American Pie is really a very well written song, just overplayed until you just want to scream. I remember 'Hollywood Nights' by Bob Seger being one song I just could not stand anymore....'Go Your Own Way' by Fleetwood Mac is a close second. -
