Would T-Bone Walker qualify? Not only could he play, but he was a master of showmanship. He was a huge influence on B.B. King and Chuck Berry too.

Recently discovered Michael Hedges (by way of Keller Williams, his stylistic successor and all around fret madman) ...the guy played like he had six hands...on a guitar/bass hybrid.  Cut short tragically.

Not "UN-" either, but Bela Fleck is an unquestioned virtuoso...he can jump from classical to jazz to rock to bluegrass...all in the same song...!  Also madly prolific, he, the flecktones and his live performances deserve more attention than they get.

One More: John Scofield...jazz, rock, r&b...he plays it all and plays it very well.  Recorded with Mingus and Miles...'nuff said.

Re: The most un-under-non appreicated/respected guitarists...

So many guitar players are underappreciated.

I like Alvin Lee , good choice, he's great. I wouldn't exactly say Blackmore was underappreciated....but I don't think he's rated as high by most. Good call on Steve Howe also.

I really only know the guitarists in the Rock genre, so apologies to those who play Jazz and Classical guitar. But these are some of my favorites who are not appreciated as much as I think they should be:

    Michael Schenker
    Robin Trower
    Chris Impellitieri
    Joe Satriani
    Peter Green
    Steve Morse
    Alex Lifeson
    Manny Charlton ( Nazareth)
    Tony Iommi
    Robert Cray
    Mick Ralphs
Paul Kossoff ( deceased in 1975 , late of Free, from "All Right Now" fame)
    Les Dudek
    Stephen Stills
    Adrian Belew.
    Bob Welch
    Lindsey Buckingham

Of course as soon as I log off , I will think of at least 5 more I should have mentioned.

I would imagine that there are another 1,000 guitarists we could add to the list. I will give you guitarists of very successful bands who for one reason or not are not recognized as they should be:

George Lynch - Dokken (He is the true innovator of the tapping technique, not EVH.)

    Warren DiMartino - Ratt
    Reb Beach - Winger
Steve Clark - Def Leppard (RIP)
    Dimebag Darrell - (Pantera)
Jake E. Lee - (Ozzy; Badlands)
John Sykes - Whitesnake and Blue Murder
    Uli Jon Roth - Scorpions

shout out to the (kinda) younger guys

john frusciante is always underrated. he can hold his own with flea, and that's saying a lot.

also, i'd obviously say jonny greenwood/ed obrien. together they texture like no other.

in terms of singing/playing and what you can do with those options, matt bellamy absolutely kills it. it's no wonder they often win best live show awards overseas

I don't think Jeff Beck is under appreciated at all. Some of the best in the world are still frightened by him.

Tommy Emmanuel - guitar god in australia
    Julian Lage
    Frank Vignola
    Bill Frisell
    Mark Whitfield
    Vernon Reid
    Ralph Towner
    Carlos Alomar

That's kind of interesting with Pete Townshend.  That statement totally seems true today but at one time I think he had a lot of recognition.

The younger gen seems to overlook the Who these days.
