    Ahh...the Eddie Vedder clones...

...what I usually refer to as "Earnest" Rock...they always sound like they need either more fiber in their diets (or maybe more drugs?)....

come to think of it, eddie's got a somewhat irritating quality about his voice that it took me a minute or two to get past. i find it somewhat endearing though, he really sounds like he's being honest.

not at all nasally though yoga, relax :)

did you know he's only like 5'7?  hm.

Finally tracked down the name of an artist I wanted to add, though it may be more the song and not her voice:  Regina Spektor singing "Fidelity" -- every time I hear that

    And it breaks my heart
    And it breaks my heart
    And it breaks my heart
    It breaks my heart

which she sings as "heart heart heart heart heart-art-art"  I think more of "breaking wind" and of course I hear it as "it breaks my f......" well, you get the idea.  I always have to change the channel when it comes on.

I'm sure she's a very nice person.  And I'm sure she's not really singing about gastrointestinal distress.

Voices I hate and not in a good way at all:

    Bono
    Steve Perry
    Geddy Lee
    Joni Mitchell
    Joan Baez

I'm sure there's plenty more but that's off the top of my head.  I just hate that high pitch stuff.

Yes, I figured these guys would be mentioned.  I think of their vocal styles as 'Modern Male Angst' or something like that.  There are a bunch more of them, too, Theory of a Deadman, Default, Stain'd...Eddie Vedder seems to be the only one who can really pull it off with any credibility.

Sting, I agree.  Cant stand his voice or his songs.

Another voice I'm not fond of is Bruce Springstein.   IMO when he sings it sounds like he's in the middle of taking a crap.

Nobody's mentioned Bryan Johnson from AC/DC yet.  I always figured the lads chose him to replace Bon Scott partly because he had one of those 'irritating in a good way' voices.  It has certainly worked like a charm.

In Response to Re: Voices that irritate you, in a good way...or not : Totally howling, Slim.  The thread that will go down in infamy, right?  Glad to have you in my corner, re: David Byrne.  Can't help myself, no love lost there.   I recently mentioned the most nasal voice of all time, the biggest hoax in popular music -- James Taylor.  Why his concerts sell out (although at Tanglewood, considering the audience, is that really all that hard to do? -- sorry if that offends anyone) I'll never know.  He's toast.  Over and out.   Stevie Nicks - nuff said.   Tom Waits I can cut some slack to, I am still trying, believe me, I try.  He's an enigma to me, and he's sexy.  I can't give up on the idea I might be able to really listen to his voice at some point.   But let's face it -- he has to be considered an acquired taste -- and I might acquire the taste at some point.   Then there's Neil Young.  Not a great voice by any measure, but I love his voice, in fact, I love everything about him.  Yes, everything, even his looks.

There certainly was a time when I might have suggested Bruce tone down all the groaning . . .  it wears pretty thin after a while, but then again, if you're recognizable enough to become a cariacature of yourself, that denotes a certain amount (and a certain kind) of success . . .  does it not?

Irritating in a good way and almost completely unintelligible is the voice of the guy from WU LYF.

Also Nils Edenloff of the Rural Alberta Advantage in a Jeff Magnumy sort of way and that baby voice of Joanna Newsom.

I love the aggressive voices like Sully-Godsmack, Dave Draimen-disturbed, and if youve never heard nightwish with their first singer, you should..Its prog metal with a female opera singer..I didnt mind a lot of the vox in the 80-s, but nowadays it annoys me..Too high pitched I think..

The song was called Epic. That's a really good song and had a cool video that went with it too.He does have a pleasantly irritating voice.
Another band that had a singer with an irratating voice was Wall of Voodoo who did the hit Mexican Radio.Yet,still a song I like.

Yes, great song.  'I wish I was in Tijuana, eating barbecued iguana...'  The voice belongs to Stan Ridgway.  I believe our fellow poster Zillagod is a big fan of his.
