Unsurprisingly brilliant.  Two points:  1)  I have never heard of Winslow Homer, will investigate.  2)  That is one lucky goddess!

Great thread.  Can't pick just one in most categories.

Musical artist:  Tie: Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, John Hiatt. It's all about the lyrics. And a bit about the melody. If it were about instrumental or vocal chops my list would look alot different.

Writer: Tie: Hunter Thompson, Bill Bryson, Peter Guralnick. (All time favorite book was 'Log from the Sea of Cortez by Steinbeck).

Painter: Charlie Russell. Not much of an art guy.  All time favorite painting is probably Picasso's Don Quiote.  Sonic must know Homer's work, even if the name is drawing a blank. Or he's young, or he's not from New England. I suspect he comes back with an "oh yeah" after his investigation.

Athlete: Tie: Bill Russell (great call D!) , Kareem Abdul Jabber. Champions both. Graceful, humble, and took alot of grief along the way.  Ali had too much bravado to get included, even though he had tongue in cheek most of the way.

Film director:  Some Coen Brothers. (Hudsucker, O Brother. Not a fan of much of the rest). Capra.  Robert Redford (River Runs Through It and Milagro Beanfield War among my all time favorites).   Never got Hitchcock.  Liked the one set in Vermont with John Forsythe in it.  And always loved Cary Grant and James Stewart, which are the only reasons I could watch some of his others.

Goddess: Can't go wrong by picking my wife.  Second place, my first wife.  Life is complicated, that's all I have in way of explanation.

"Goddess: Can't go wrong by picking my wife.  Second place, my first wife. " That's the best laugh I've had this week.

You won't believe this, but I was going to make a thread for just asking about favorite visual artists (primarily painters).   I thought that would be enough to contend with (since I have several, in various categories myself).

    Too funny.

What is the story with God / Goddess?   I can't imagine anyone calling me a goddess, unless he was going to hit me up for a loan.  :P

I'll be back to fill in the slots.

Crime and Punishment is fantastic.  As is The Brothers Karamazov, although truthfully I wasn't able to finish it.  He's not an easy read by any means.  But even if you can only half-finish one of his books it's well worth it.

My favorite work of his is the shorter piece called 'Notes From Underground' in which he explains in stunning detail the exact reasons for the perversity of human behaviour, making you cringe and laugh at the same time.  It's an awe-inspiring work.

LOL.  Busted.  I have a cocktail in the evening on the weekends.  And then I start babbling.  When I wake up in the morning I usually decide it's way too much information and nobody wants to read about whatever it is I was on about.

TOO FUNNY!  I am laughing out loud here.   You didn't delete, however, so maybe you didn't babble last night.  :).

It's a very funny concept, all in all, to post when you're tipsy, and read it back the next day.    Either way, no harm done.   You've never posted your name, address or phone number, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.   :)

Hard to pick the most influential or inspiring, but....

Musician/band:  The Doors.  (When younger, Gn'R).

Writer:  Tolkein.  [Early installation of the concepts of duty, sacrifice, and honor] (Then, Hemmingway, Steinbeck, Fitzgerald).

Written works:  LOTR, Silmarillion/Unifinished Tales (The Children of Hurin; Beren and Luthien).    (Then, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Islands In The Stream, East of Eden, Tender is the Night.)

Film:  The Mahabharata (Peter Brook). (For all its faults as a 3-part English film attempting to depict a monthlong religious play....  First watched it with my parents when very young ...11ish years old...set some very important thoughts spinning, on top of the ones first set in motion my father read LOTR to me over a year or two, perhaps starting when I was 6 and a little young to read something of that size. I have a distinct memory of thinking about it on a bus ride in first grade.)

    Painter:  Ribera, Van Gogh, Dali

Athlete: The guy who somehow finished that football game with a broken leg; or one of the captains of the wrestling team when I was a freshmen who finished the season and placed 6th in the state...with a completely shattered wrist and thumb.

God:  The Great Spaghetti Monster, Dionysus.

    Comedy: Monty Python's Flying Circus

    Actor: Tom Baker

    ....and of course...

Porn Star: Carlos Danger, aka, Anthony Weiner

American. Somewhere between 100-150 years ago I think.

Well known for capturing stormy seas and the people who brave it. Also did landscapes / portraits-within-landscapes

What a surprise, Leafswin27 names Darryl Sittler as his fave sports star.

Great choice, I still remember the game vs. Boston when he scored 6 goals and 4 assists ( the record still stands, I believe).

I was at the old Boston Garden for a Bruins/ Leafs game in the late 70's. Went down to the snackbar between periods and I was at the spot where they pull the curtain to let the visitors file onto the ice for the next period. I was literally 3-4 feet away from the Maple Leafs team as the walked past....I yelled out to Borje Salming , but he didn't look my way....I admired this man because he was one of the first Swedes to make it full time in the 70's NHL. This was when Canadians didn't want the Euros coming over here to take away their jobs. Borje Salming took a beating, the man was slammed around time after time. He was never a dirty player, took every hit and instead of retaliating and getting penalized , he just kept doing what he did best and he was one of the greatest defensemen of his era....I would say my favorite non- Boston athletes he would be in my top two after the late, great Expos, Mets catcher Gary Carter.
