Easy Rider always comes to mind. I know I'll think of some others. An Indy movie called "Fandango" starring Kevin Costner and Judd nelson had a good one.

I almost feel like cheating by saying Woodstock, but I won't.My favorite movie soundtrack would be "Dazed and confused".Lots of great classic rock songs on it.

    Good choice.

I guess the Soundtrack to Quadrophenia should count since many of the tracks were redone.

Re: Your favorite Movie Sound Tracks.

Some of the choices above are excellent, but most seemed to take songs that were popular already and put them to the movie. So my choices are three that had songs written specifically for the soundtrack.

Teachers (decent Nick Nolte movie): Title song by .38 Special was pretty good. Closing credits song "Misunderstanding" by Bob Seger was great. Some other good songs too. (Somewhat obscure because I could nver find this as a CD so I haven't heard it in years.)

Streets of Fire: A couple of excellent Jim Steinman songs (Diane Lane lip-synced to them in the movie). A song by The Fixx and some other pretty good songs.

St. Elmo's Fire. Play this CD and you're immediately transported into the mid-1980s.

Sweet, I was waiting on one of you to name it. Zilla is calling me maniacal in my devotion to the band. And I really hate pizzing off large ugly reptiles. And I thank you for naming the album. He can't blame me for it.

    "The Last Waltz".

It's not r&r, but I loved 'O Brother Where Art Thou'.

And definitely those 1st 2 Beatles movies (Hard Days Night and Help).

And Robert Altman's 'Kansas City' had some killer music in it.

"Almost Famous"  (amazing assortment of songs)

"School of Rock"  (I love this film, can't help myself) -- soundtrack is pretty good, too.

Not including concert films or other vanity projects, these are my favorites (which, not coincidentally, are also some of my favorite movies about popular music):

    - The Harder They Come
    - Almost Famous (and almost perfect)
    - Singles
    - Say Anything
    - The Crow
    - Trainspotting
    - High Fidelity
    - Me, Myself & Irene (weirdly cool)
    - Magnolia
    - Purple Rain
    - Jackie Brown (so cool, it's ice cold)
    - Pump Up The Volume (a great sleeper soundtrack)

The Crow. How could I possibly not mention that considering I brought up Dead Souls only the other day. And the soundtrack to the second Crow movies was much better than the movie itself. I really do like Love's rendition of Gold Dust Woman.

I stand corrected. IMO it has to be "American Graffiti."

P.S. I have to add the "I'm Not There" soundtrack, def. one of my favorites of the last decade.  Some stellar Dylan covers which - given the seemingly infinite number of Dylan covers - is actually saying something.  The collaborating 'house' band is also top-notch, featuring Tom Verlaine, Lee Ranaldo, John Medeski, and others.

    My highlights:
Goin' To Acapulco - Jim James & Calexico
Dark Eyes - Iron & Wine
The Wicked Messenger - Black Keys
I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine - John Doe
    Tombstone Blues - Ritchie Havens
Fourth Time Around - Yo La Tengo
You Ain't Goin' Nowhere - Swell Season

I love the soundtrack from 'To Live and Die in L.A.', by Wang Chung. Especially the title song.
