YOUR FAVORITE PROTEST BAND OR PROTEST SONG

Covering both categories I'd have to say Monster/America by Steppinwolf.  Also Unknown Soldier by Jim Morrison and the Doors.  The latter performer's father was Admiral Morrison of the U.S. Navy.

I don't know if you call these protest songs, but my two favorites have to be:

Gods of War - Def Leppard
Civil War - Guns and Roses

War Requiem - Benjamin Britten (with help from Wilfred Owen)

Edited Greg's excellent list for space, but a big +1 on the Britten.  Also would add in a similar vein, Dona Nobis Pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

I think I just did this in the other "protest" thread, but for me there is only one.

For me, Marvin Gaye has the golden trifecta...

    - What's Going On
    - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)
    - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)

The whole album is an exquisite expression of social malaise from a truly gifted artist.

Add: Ani Difranco, Billy Bragg.  Inspired folkie rabble rousing.

But if I want to get all WTO'd and vent at the Man, I go with either the great Public Enemy or Rage Against The Machine (the latter with one of my favorite screams ever: "F**k You! I won't do what you tell me!!").

Best protest band would have to be Twisted Sister.

I have an alternate list from the metal/hard rock crowd:

We're Not Going To Take It - Twisted Sister
    99 Luftballoons - Nina
    The Final Countdown - Europe
Will The Sun Rise When It's Over - Dokken
    Little Child - White Lion
Respect (You Talkin' To Me) - Pantera

     And the anti-protest song:

Peace Sells But Who's Buying - Megadeath

Many of my favorites have already been named.

I'll add Bruce Cockburn's "If I Had a Rocket Launcher."

I don't know if it's a protest song, but I always associate Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watch Tower" with protests - maybe's it's the era from which it sprouted.

Bruce Cockburn, another really good singer/songwriter. That was a good song!

We are forgetting perhaps the founder of protest singing, Mr. Woody Guthrie. Woody casts long shadow over all the protest singers and protest songs that followed. He is the great-grandaddy of them all.

Seriously, I never took Alice's Restaurant to be protest.  Was there some kind of hidden meaning I didn't hear?
