"Shannon" by Henry Gross is about a lost Irish Setter. I'm depressed for three days every time I hear that song.. "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be" by Carly Simon paints a sad picture of domestic life. -

I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt
turn down the lights
turn down the bed
turn down these voices
inside my head
lay down with me
tell me no lies
just hold me close
don't patronize
don't patronize me
chorus:
i can't make you love me if you don't
you can't make your heart feel
somethin' it wont
here in the dark,in these final hours
i will lay down my heart
and feel the power if you wont
no you wont
cuz i can't make you love me
if you don't
verse:
i'll close my eyes
then i wont see
the love you dont feel
when your holdin' me
morning will come
and i'll do whats right
just give me till then
to give up this fight
and i will give up this fight -

LA Guns - Ballad of Jayne
(Again, just a memory of someone else who I lost to a gun)She was always something special
A diamond shining bright in the rain
Everybody dreams of angels
No one will ever know how much i loved you so
Now it all seems funny
Kinda like a dream
Things aint always what they seem
What a shame
What happened to jayne
U were always on my mind
A childlike summer days in the sun
Slowly wishes turn to sadness
Time don't heal a broken gun
I wish i'd never let you go
Hear me now cause i want ya to knowNow it all seems funny
Kinda like a dream
Things aint always what they seem
What a shame
What happened to jayne
Now she's breakin' hearts in heaven
Shining bright in the sky
I still hear her voice in the wind
I still think of you in the night
Well i guess she'll never know
How much i need her soNow it all seems funny
Kinda like a dream
Things aint always what they seem
What a shame
What happened to jayne -

Last song
Say Hello to Heaven
Temple of the Dog
Again, it is the memory attached to the song as the song itself.
Please, mother mercy
Take me from this place
And the long winded curses
I hear in my head
Words never listen
And teachers Oh they never learn
Now I'm warm from the candle
But I feel too cold to burn
He came from an island
And he died from the street
He hurt so bad like a soul breaking
But he never said nothing to me
So say hello to heaven
New like a baby
Lost like a prayer
The sky was your playground
But the cold earth is your bed
Ooh, said poor Stargazer
She's got no tears in her eyes
But smooth like a whisper
She knows that love heals all wounds with time
Now it seems like too much love
Is never enough, you better seek out
Another road 'cause this one has
Ended abrupt, say hello to heaven
I never wanted
To write these words down for you
With the pages of phrases
Of things we'll never do
So I blow out the candle, and
I put you to bed
Since you can't say to me
Now how the dogs broke your bone
There's just one thing left to be said
Say hello to heaven -

Don't go for that kind of music.
But my eyes do tear up for other reasons, maybe i'm wierd. Sometimes, it's that perfect note, or that perfectly sung lyric. Also tends to cause a tingling feeling run through my head & goose bumps on my arms.
The actual "sadness" or not of the lyrics are strangely irrelevant.
The question is songs, but man, listening to Yo Yo Ma or Rostropovich play with their god-like hands can also cause eyes to water somewhat. -
