The all-time best Cantonese restaurant in Boston, was Carl's Pagoga.
Aside from the incredibly delectable specialties they served up, the rough hewn atmosphere with the ancient little old waiter, conjured up the feeling of being in old Canton.
    Oh the memories!

Uncle Cheung's Framingham and some others

In Response to Your favorite Chinese food in the Boston area?:

My favorite place is Uncle Cheung's on Rt. 9 East in Framingham, particularly their Dim Sum menu on weekends. Everything is so fresh and some choices you typically don't see in the suburbs. The owner and staff are very nice too - great service.

If you like spicier food (VERY spicy), Sichuan Gourmet across the street on Rt. 9 West is your place. Beware though..VERY hot and spicy!

Shanghai Gate in Allston can be great at times (have had some great dumplings there) and more authentic than Americanized.

In Boston, I like Taiwan Cafe on Chinatown - "hole in the wall" small place up some stairs - forget the street name, but great Taiwanese food. The prices are very cheap and there is no atmosphere but the food is wonderful.

Finally, if you want a crazy Dim Sum experience with carts and all, you must go to China Pearl in Boston. Just be ready to stand in a long line on weekends. It's a fun place, but I've had better food elsewhere.

Can someone please advise where to get actually good Chinese food on the North Shore?  I've tried Gourmet Garden in Swampscott, Su-Chang's in Peabody, Mandarin Danvers, Yan's in Swampscott, both awful places in Marblehead, Jade House in Salem, Fresh Taste of Asia in Salem..... nothing is good!  And what's the deal with entrees not coming with rice??  So odd.

[QUOTE]we always order from Beijing House in Norwell -- they have photos of various members of Aerosmith on the walls from when the guys have stopped in over the years.  we almost always order the same thing:  beef lo mein, pork fried rice, chicken with mixed vegetables, and of course egg rolls.

"Do you crave chicken teriyaki and pork fried rice? How about crab rangoon or low mein?"

Two of out of four in this question from the Globe aren't even Chinese. The other two are the equivalent of a sandwich or sub. And some of the restaurants cited in the slideshow are based on reviews that are more than five years old.

That's not to say there aren't some great restaurants in the list, or being discussed on this thread. I'd add Hei La Moon in Chinatown, Mulan in Waltham, and Sichuan Gourmet in Framingham.

Sichuan Gourmet in Billerica, then Sharon, then Framingham ... Brookine location eased the spicy edge of it's other locations to be friendly on the restaurant row at St. Mary's Stop.

Re: Your favorite Chinese food in the Boston area?

I'd like to first say that I'm Chinese and crab rangoons are NOT Chinese food.  Also, Kowloon's is NOT Chinese food, it's Americanized Asian food that is loved by Phantom Gourmet because the Wongs sponsor that program.

That (rant) said, we love to dine at Great Taste and New Golden Gate in Chinatown (Beach Street), China Pearl in Quincy, Bernard's at Chestnut Hill Mall, and Joyful Garden in Brighton.

Bottom line: if you see Asians dining there, then it's pretty authentic.

Shanghai Village in Arlington is an old and reliable standby.

The new(ish) House of Chang on Concord Ave. in Cambridge is also very good, and underappreciated.

Re: Your favorite Chinese food in the Boston area?

Bernards and Golden Temple are the very best around.  But when you are a little bit further North, you should try the Great Wall in Bedford.  Nowhere near as elegant, but extremely flavorful traditional dishes served in a comfortable, moderately-upscale setting.  The addition of lamb dishes to their menu I guess takes them slightly beyond traditional.  I've never been disappointed with their food.  They also have a reasonably priced and decently diverse buffet deal.  And because they are in a strip mall out in the burbs, one can actually drive to and freely park at their location.
