We would like to give a posthumous accolade to the great Chef Changs House formerly of Beacon Street  Brookline.    Nothing compares in our opinion....consistent excellence over 25 years!  We miss you and hope all is well and we are still looking forward to a reopening. Agreed! All my chinese friends go to Sichuan Garden, 3 Alfred street in Woburn; awesome authentic Szechuan cuisine, lots of very unusual (from the american point of view) dishes, a must try if you are really into chinese food...the real stuff! :-)

In Response to Re: Your favorite Chinese food in the Boston area?:
First off, chicken teriyaki, pork fried rice, crab rangoon & low mein are NOT Chinese food. Second, once you actually eat Chinese food you simply can't stomach the swill that we get at typical "Chinese" places in the US. This year, my friends and I will be enjoying some Guizhou dishes here: http://www.thebeijinger.com/directory/Da-Gui

It's not my absolute favorite, but it's decent food and in the neighborhood, Great Wall on Centre Street in JP right by the Monument. It is just a take-out place, but you can get small sizes for just about everything, which is handy when buying for a small group of people. The food is good, it's not great, it is take-out Chinese after all, but I have never been completely disappointed in the meal. Plus you could get lucky, and the owner's son, who is probably around 10 now, will keep you entertained with stories and jokes. He may even offer you a map of the neighborhood for $15, or let you shoot a couple of baskets on his homemade hoop. He is hilarious. The restaurant has been closed the past week or so, holiday I am hoping, but I recommend Great Wall in JP.

Seeing all these "recommendations" makes me weep.

If you want real, good Chinese food and not the Americanized junk that passes as Chinese food, you need to go to Chinatown.

Changsho in Porter Square, Cambridge is worthy, but my all-time favorite was China Sun in Davis Square, Somerville. Cheap and very good. Their singapore rice noodle and spicy chicken wings were legendary!!! Even their sweet-and-sour chicken was a heavenly experience... ..but they disapppeared a few years ago.  DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE CHINA SUN WENT???

China Sky went out of business.  I believe that they tried something else at that same location, but it didn't catch on.  They used to be the best chinese food restaurant around.

I want to second/third/fourth the following places:
    Gourmet Dumpling House in Chinatown
Shanghai Gate in Allston (great mix of authentic Chinese food as well as "American" Chinese food - reminds me of what my Chinese friend's mom used to make us growing up)
    China Sky in Winchester

Royal Garden on Route 1 South in Peabody!  They use pure white meat chicken and good beef in their dishes.  I have not found any other food quality that compares!  It is worth a drive from the South Shore!
