What a great opportunity to send off Carell by having Ricky rejoin the show as he's leaving.

Absolutely, Rhys Darby would be an awesome pick to replace Carell.  Murray Hewitt is one of the best characters ever and has the quirkiness needed to fill the void that Michael Scott will leave.

Rumors are Harvey Keitel is being tapped to replace him. He'd play a retired salesman who had to go back to work because of economy. I think it'd be brilliant. A hard nosed no BS boss comes in and can't believe the loons he works with, and Dwight trying harder then ever to please him, but being frightened to death at the same time.

Rhys Darby, what a great thought!

Heck, he could even just play the same exact character and it would be perfect.

No one should replace Michael Scott. There are enough well developed characters on the show to continue The Office without him. Besides, I can't see anyone else playing Michael Scott.

That's an easy one...Ed Helms who plays Andy. Ed has all the zany characteristics of Michael plus he went to Cornell thereby establishing his bona fides.

Re: Who could be the next Michael Scott on 'The Office'?

There really shouldn't be a replacement for Michael Scott, per se. There should be a new character introduced that represents a new flavor of idiot boss. The British version showcased the worst traits a British boss could have and the American show showcased the worst traits an American boss could have. Perhaps the new boss could be a blend - or even better, a total screw-up.

Or they could go in the opposite direction and have the boss be a competent professional who has to deal with the pack of lunatics and slackers that work there. Of course the boss would have to have a big secret or serious flaw to make him "worthy" of Dunder-Mifflin. The rumor that Harvey Keitel might join the cast could use this idea.

As a set-up the characters should be scrambling to compete to take over Michael Scott's job, only to be surprised with the introduction of their new boss.

Introducing or guest-starring David Brent (Ricky Gervais) or other characters from the British show would be kind of cool, especially if they were rivals to their American counterparts. Iimagine the joys of Dwight Shrute (Rainn Wilson) vs. Gareth Keenan (Mackenzie Crook). The American version of "Men Behaving Badly" did the same thing in an episode and it was hilarious.
