I'd get a second opinion asap.  What did he mean by "work itself out" - by what avenue?

Re: Porcupine quill under dog's skin

The vet thought it would work its way out like a splinter, but it feels soft now, so we don't think it can poke itself out through the skin.  It is not infected and it isn't painful; there is no swelling or redness.  We can touch it and move it without bothering the dog.    This happened a few weeks ago.

I'll call the vet today and see what they think.

    Thanks.

Weeks?  Definitely call the vet, it should have done what it's going to do by now.

    Postscript:

The quill came out on its own.  It just poked up through the skin and we pulled it out the rest of the way.  Pretty amazing.
