    Re: February 2013

Beautiful day -  glad to be out and walking around.  No great treasures found, but I did pick up a few things.  Got home in time to get a call from dr.'s office that test I had yesterday was normal, so that's good.  Seems as tho I should celebrate with something special to eat - but strawberries will have to do!  Have some picking up to do around here and put some thought into what I'll make for supper before going out tonight.  No special plans for the week-end.  Hope you all have a good one.  Forecast now is only for a sprinkling to 1 inch, at least in this area.

tt, how was the cookie baking the other day? I don't remember a post on it, if I missed it I'm sorry. Glad your test results came back with good results. I'm going to Twin River tonight for a few hours, hope I win.

    Re: February 2013

Cookie baking went well.  Divied them up between her house and my intown son's.  Only disappointment was a bottle of red and white sprinkles I bought that morning and didn't realize were peppermint flavored - when I test tasted them, they tasted more like medicine than peppermint candy.  The 3 cookies I sprinkled them on, GD steered clear of.  We're making whoopie pies for St. Paddy's with just a slight tinge of green in the filling.

Good luck tonight.  Wish I were going with you.  Have never been there, only Foxwoods and the other place.

Yes I remember you talking about the green whoopie pies. I'd like one of those please. Thanks. Twin River is nice, all it has are slots.

Have a lot of fun, Winter. Never been to Indian River, but now I know why, since they only have slots. DH plays Black Jack. I play slots and win; he plays Black Jack and loses. So we are a good pair. Usually come home with a bit of change.
Last Sunday, we won $50 playing Keno at Sarpino's Pizzaria. Big deal. Everyone around were so happy for us.
Haven't been to Foxwood for quite a while. Now I want to go.
Yes, it is really nice out today. Wish I could have spent some time outside. Instead, I am sitting here getting a headache from the smell of paint. Don't know, what they are painting today. My office is done.
Have a good evening with your Nanny friend tonight, tt. It's never good to meditate on a full stomach, so go light on supper.
I am ready to pack up. Everyone have a pleasant evening.

Honey and I rae kind of like that too Pingo...Only...he s the one with the luck...He wins scratch tickets....dice rolls....superbowl squares...rafles...you get the picture...I win nothing ever...

My ex husband was the same way...He still is...he just hit the lotttery for 3,000.00

We had  pretty good Vday...I didn't sleep that much last night because I'm a bit behind in my work..I am kind of caught up but I usually like to be done by now, regretably, I still have my Sunday orders left to put up...but we have had quite a whirlwind of activity in a short period of time.

Last Wenesday and Thursday was the wake/funeral of Honey's Mother's long time companion. Honey's Dad died in 1984....and roundabouts 1987 his Mom "dated" this gentleman but it seems ridiculous to call him a boyfriend. ......Then we had the storm....then it was Valentine's Day (holiday generated business) now...its the weekend...so...I am behind. Oh ya and I gave a class on Monday....Yup..no wonder I am behind...I'll survive

I did get to poke my nose out today...to go to the bank...It was really nice!

    Night All!

    Re: February 2013

    Good morning,

Seagulls are coming inland - definite sign of a storm coming.  Love their sound, hear them before I open the blinds and see them. - If only we had picture ability, 4 of them sitting on top of the corner house roof, 2 at one end, 2 at the other.

When does DH come home, Kargiver, I forget how long they were going for.

Busy time of year for your business, Icer.  Next month too, I imagine.  Are you involved in the parade this year?  Sorry to hear of your MIL's companion.  I'm sure she'll feel a big void in her life.

How did you make out last night at Twin Rivers, Winter?  I'm sure it was a fun night, regardless of winning or not.  Haven't been to Foxwoods since last St. Paddy's Day - hmm, wonder if they'd be interested in going again this year.  Nothing's been said about my birthday this year.  Maybe I'll set some family plans in motion, celebrating a milestone, that with this birthday I will have lived past the age my sister died.  Next one to get past is my mother's, in two years.  Funny how we mark things off.

I'm starving, so breakfast then find a low key program to put on TV for background, and get started.  Baking my orange coffee cake only putting it into muffin form, is on the agenda too.

    Check the boards later.

Been snowing here for an hour but the forecaster (WBZ) says only 1 -3 inches total for the next 24 hours, but 4 - 8 on the outer Cape.  We'll see!

Orange coffee cake sounds like something I could really get behind.my husband loves orange cake and demands it for each birthday..how about the recipe, TT?  We have decided to eat onlly breakfast each meal this weekend.

Starving - must go make some food and run out to do an early errand.  Best to all on this snowy day.

    Re: February 2013

You guys are ahead of us for snow this morning, but we got about 2-3" last night.  Did everyone? My "weatherman" isn't home so I have no idea, lol.

tt, he returns Tuesday.  So far there's no real need to plow, but definitely to shovel the front and back steps and patio.  It's Saturday so if he were home he'd do it because he enjoys shoveling. But, as it is, I'll get the calorie burn...which is great because I ate mu shu pork for breakfast. :)

Had a wondfully blessed time with my friends yesterday.  The babies are on some pureed food; they just turned 8 months, can you believe it?  I always leave their feeling as if I'd spent the day on a sunny vacation despite "working" the whole time.  Sure doesn't feel like work when you're spending time with a dear friend in the process.

much like yesterday, the phone rang and I've been sitting on this post awhile so I know there will be new ones that pop up!  It was DH, and all is great. :)

    Re: February 2013

Snow is coming down, big, light, fluffy flakes.  Just risked life and limb and went out and filled the feeder.  Since the perching rod has been broken, they've gotten used to eating seed I spread on the ground.  Now, this morning filling the feeder itself and not scattering any, the silly birds are scratching in the snow underneath instead of flying up where they could perch on the sides and have a banquet!

I had a banquet of a breakfast, French toast with syrup and powdered sugar.  Delicious.

Hats, I published the orange coffee cake years ago here, but it's among those that never made it when they changed over systems.  However, if you go to Allrecipes.com, and put in Hot Orange Coffee Cake, you will pull up Aunt Mamie's. It's a duplicate of mine - annoyed me no end because after mine had appeared in these columns, it appeared there, with no reference to the original poster (me), or the original (as far as that site goes) C.C.  Mine is yellow with age, cut from somewhere, probably 30 years ago at least - I used to make it when the boys were young.   That being said, it is definitely a coffee cake, a grainy consistency, definitely not the fine texture birthday cakes are usually made from.  It is a delicate orange flavor, however.  After a couple of days, I freeze mine, because I find it's best in the first couple of days.  That's why I've decided to bake it in muffin form today.  Enjoy.

ETA:  Corrected other poster's name to "Aunt Mamie".

Pingo, hope you got some fresh air and shook your headache.

    Tt, how was your meditation?

winter, hope you had fun and at least broke even. :)

hats, I could "get behind" that orange coffee cake, too, lol.

icer, enjoying burning 1/10th of the wood you have been?  I am having a hard time not getting it too warm.  put half a load in last night and woke up to it being 70!!  Dh would not have slept a wink with it that warm, lol.  I was snug as a bug.

Saw your post when mine came up, Kargiver.  Just a couple of more days for poor Gracie to wonder where her Dad has gone, and why.  Reminds me of that commercial with the dog is looking out the window and sees his mistress coming up the walk, home from the war.  He bounds out and knocks her down with doggie kisses.  Cute ad.

ETA:  Wasn't a meditation last night, something different, but enjoyable, with the exception that the place was about 10 degrees colder than is comfortable for me.  Came home and pulled a flannel nightgown (which I don't usually wear) out of the drawer to get warm.

I LOVE that ad and, yes, have even choked up at it.  Gracie is moping.  Thank goodness only a few more days.  I can stand it because I know where he is and when he's returning, but she is not happy not knowing these things.  Her exuberance upon his return will be epic. :)

10 degrees colder is COLD.  I hope you got warm in your flannel soon.  Sometimes once I'm that cold I can't seem to get warm without a hot shower or something.

    Re: February 2013

    Good morning,
And we are just supposed to get a dusting? It is coming down here pretty heavily right now. Big fat flakes. The radar doesn't show a very broad band, but it is pretty solid. I predict, we will get at least 3 inches here.
Those orange muffins sounds just up my alley. Yesterday, I bought a new  supply of muffin papers. But the orange will have to wait. I have a pint of blueberries, that needs to be used. Not fresh enough to be eaten out of hand, but fine for baked goods. I also have 2 bananas that are waiting for a 3rd to be turned into banana muffins. So I guess, I will be little miss muffin sitting on my tuffin this weekend.
How awful someone stole and published your recipe w/o reference to you, tt. It would have upset me too.
And the trips are already 8 months old. I can imagine they must be lots of fun, but also a lot of work. How blessed your friend is to have you, Kar, to help out.
Hats, with having only breakfast each meal, does that mean your will have 3 breakfast meals a day, or just one meal of breakfast? I am a bit confused.
DH left for work a long time ago. I am puttering around with laundry, baking and cleaning the house. Fortunately my yesterday's headache went away before I got home.
Enjoy the day and stay dry and warm.

Just a quick post - realize now the birds scratching  under the feeder, were scratching feeders. Now that the chickadees are swooping back and forth at the feeder, and dropping the seeds they don't want, the "scratchers" are finally having their feast.

Nature is funny to watch sometimes, tt. Just looked at our squirrel on the deck. DH must have thrown a cup of seeds on the deck for the Juncos before he left. But now the snow covers them. So Mr. squirrel is "shoveling" a path with his snout in the snow looking for and finding the seeds. Cute.

I have got to drag myself away from this computer and take the wash down cellar and get it thrown in.  How I hate going down there.  At least now the snow has melted away from the cellar windows so it is light and not the terrible dark it was with the windows covered up.  My last game of MahJong didn't last long, so that's a sign - - - - Go do your washes !

    Re: February 2013

Breakfast - yes breakfast 3x day- or more like 2x for him.  I had coffee early early.  Then I had a bagel and he had tea.  Then I made him eggs, toast, oj, potatoes which he just finished.  (I just had a few potatoes.)  I'll have more coffee soon.  We'll probably have an afternoon snack oftea and fruit - then waffles or pancakes for supper.  Tomorrow bacon and eggs, then ?  something with leftover bacon!  I have lots of eggs/milk/cream etc to use up before we go to Florida for a week.  Revving up my frying arm, as a character in a book I once read, said.

TT the coffee cake sounds good, I prefer a coffee cake texture myself so I will bookmark the recipe and see what happens.  I do have a lot to do this weekend and with all the frying I may not want to bake.

    Re: February 2013

Winter, hope you feel better as the day goes by. Too bad you didn't win, but breaking even - or like in your case not loosing all you brought is good.
Yesterday in the news was this lady, I believe the owner or heir to Jack-in-the-Box, who gambled away 1 Billion Dollars in 3 years playing slots. The news said it was something like $30,000 an hour. How is that even possible? Well of course if you play high stakes and use several machines, it would be. She looked terrible being led into court. Not like someone, who had fun gambling.
My question is, why didn't anyone stop her, before it came to this? 1 Biliion is not exactly change laying around. The banks must have noticed large withdrawels. Even the casinos should have known, this was quite unusual, and should have had the courtesy to stop her.
A friend of ours (and I am embarrased to actually call him a friend now) quit his job and became a professional gambler. He was kicked out of first Atlantic City, then Las Vegas for excessive gambling. He left the country, owing everyone money, before they could take hime to court. Don't know, where he is now, and I don't want to know either. So sad.

Ah, Hats. That makes sense. Using up the stuff in the refrigerator, before going away. It is always a problem; I hate to throw away food. I try to freeze away, what can be frozen, and I try not to shop much the week, before we leave.
I was quite surprised. I left an unopened bottle of milk in the ref. for 10 days, when we both went away last. It was as good as new, when we got back. Your eggs should be fine too.

    Re: February 2013

First time I've tried the orange recipe as muffins, but they baked in 20 minutes and I just took them out.  12 nice high muffins.  Along with the topping the recipe called for, I added finely chopped walnuts.  Can't wait to bite into one.

Washes are done, one has gone through the dryer, and the other is going in now.  Other than the baking, not much else has gotten done.

Snow has just about stopped, only a few intermittent flakes coming down.  Guess tonight is when the second larger batch will come in.

Cheerio tried  her darndest to get the door to the upstairs open.  Followed me around from room to room, and then finally gave in to boredom and is under the comforter in here.  She's down for the afternoon.

ETA:  tip on the recipe (don't know if it's in Aunt Mamie's directions), whisk the dry ingredients rather than sift, and when you add the juice, eggs and butter, just quickly stir until moistened.  You don't want to beat this batter. --  Did you get that, Aunt Mamie? (!!)

    Re: February 2013

Thanks! for the xtra directions.  Not much worry about me sifting though - I never do that unless there's lumps or bumps in ingredients - every once in a while the canisters get moisture and it makes lumps.  I am too darn lazy!  I always figure the sifting together thing came from the old days and with our modern ingredients and mixers it's not as necessary.  And I am a good baker.  Too good.  If I bake it I eat it and that's fatal.  So I try to hold back.

When you were talking about heart shaped pans I rememberd that I have a great big one (12")  and I used to make a devil's food cake and glaze it with cocoa/sugar/milk glaze for Valentine's day.  But DH doesn't like choc cake so now that we are the only ones around I don't bother.  Because I would eat it all within days.  Trying to eat only apples for snacks...and am having a nice cup of Darjeeling tea.  Hold it in your hands and it warms inside and out.

DH just came in from cleaning the driveway. Light and fluffy and easy. Not biting the ground. Fairly warm out too. Will probably melt away, if you don't touch it. But it would be good to get rid of it, as we are getting more tonight.
