Trader Joes just opened in Saugus and I bought their french vanilla, sorry I did, can't stop eating it. I think it's delicious and how could it not with cream as the main ingredient. For supermarket ice creams I chose Trader Joes' hands down.

Until you've had Gifford's Old Fashion Vanilla Ice Cream from Skowhegan, Maine, you have not had Vanilla Ice Cream! It's available at Shaws and Hannafords.....

Brigham's Vanilla Ice Cream is the very best and the only way it could be improved is to cover it with Brigham's Hot Fudge Sauce. Tastes like a little bit of heaven!!!!!

Stop & Shop's Premium Vanilla Ice Cream is surprisingly good and relatively inexpensive. Worth a try even if you're not on a tight budget!

I like Brigham's Vanilla Ice Cream much more than others. I tryed french vanilla from Trader Joes' too, it is good, but Brigham's better.

Richardsons Ice Cream is second to none. Dube's has the best fried clams. Riverview has the best pizza and the Willows has the best popcorn.....and the Driftwood has the best breakfast.

    End of discussion!!!!

"In the freezer" would, for me, mean not from an ice cream stand, but from a supermarket or other store like that. So I'll just stick to the store-boughts for evaluation purposes.

I like Breyer's French Vanilla. It has really good ingredients and tastes rich enough although it's not as deadly as, say, B&J or Haagen Daaz. And it is often on sale, at least at Shaw's and Stop & Shop. Incredibly, I saw it at Whole Foods for a whopping $6.69 for a half gallon. That's a lot even for purse-snatching, wallet-lifting Whole Foods. (My wife is absolutely deadly there, and plucks things off shelves like they're being given away. I am helpless to stop this.) I also like Breyer's Vanilla (the regular, not French one, the difference being egg yolks in the French).

Brigham's vanilla. Yeah, pretty good, I have to say. Unfortunately for me, whether it be Brigham's, Breyer's Ben and Jerry's, or some other brand, I have to limit my intake of fatty dairy products. And so, I have even tried...I'm having a hard time saying it...soy ice cream. Hey, it's not that bad once you get used to it. :-)

macnh1, When you say "the best", how many other places have you been to compare? I can see saying a place is very good. Everyone has different tastes. What makes your places special? Is it something unique that they do?

I have to agree with Pingo. Homemade just beats all!
I use the Fannie Farmer cookbook as well as a Ben and Jerry's cookbook as a base and go from there.
OT - (Just made a vanilla with chocolate-covered pretzels last week. Will be making pumpkin pie ice cream again this year for Thanksgiving. I'm in AZ, so ice cream is a year-round affair. My favorite is prickly pear.)

Circles - thanks for the compliment!
Have you ever tried peppermint ice cream? It is just a home made vanila with plenty of crushed peppernint candies thrown in. I only make it at Christmas time b/c my family goes crazy for it.
When my family got me the cuisinard ice cream maker for me one Christmas - I knew what was up. Use it all the time.

No, I haven't made peppermint yet, but that's a great suggestion! I'll have 15-20 people for Christmas. I use the KitchenAid attachment for my stand mixer. I just keep the bowl frozen in my other freezer so it will be ready to go at any time.
I just got a request from a friend to do a bacon and egg ice cream. I have no idea how to tackle that one...I'm open to suggestions!
