How big an issue is the environment?

I think the question "caring for the environment" is just too broad. There are many "environmental" issues out there and people care about some more than others.
I personally support having a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade system because I think the cost of pollution should be made explicit for all manufacturers and other industries.
However, I think there are many stupid policies in the "environmental" category. For example, subsidizing corn ethanol is a travesty that drives up food prices and transfers money to large, efficient corn growers. It would make a lot more sense to purchase sugar based ethanol from countries such as Brazil.
All environmental policies should be designed in a way that minimize effects on economic growth and income distribution.
