Re: New Year resolutions for staying fit?

There are no quick and easy fixes for living a healthy and enjoyable life.

You have to find a way to enjoy working out and keeping active. If you can do that then you will never be poor or bored.

Re: New Year resolutions for staying fit?

I'm already fit.  I find New Years resolutions to be pointless... people almost never stick to them.  Everyone has the best intentions, but if nearly everyone resolves, each year, that "this will be the year!" obviously they're not sticking to resolutions made in past years.  Instead, I didn't wait until New Years to make a change and instead, when I saw that my busy lifestyle was getting the better of me, I just went ahead and made the change... eat healthily (but everything in moderation) and exercise regularly.  It's easier to make these changes when the weather outside is nice.  Since I had already established these habits, I made it through the holiday season without gaining weight, and didn't need to flip a switch on January 1 and try to develop a new habit.  Starting a new habit (or stopping one) at the start of a new year may hold some psychological appeal, but it's really kind of arbitrary and people rarely stick with resolutions they've made just because it's a new year.

I'm ending my time-consuming volunteer work in the development offices of two non-profits. Both orgs have enough money already and I've been using the time I could be doing yoga and working out to help bring them more money. This year I'll be taking care of myself first.

Re: New Year resolutions for staying fit?

I am fit now and have been fit my entire life. It's a life long endeavor. You have to enjoy moving your body and staying active. There is no trick except how to mange it and have fun. If you have fun then it's not work or a chore. That has been the key to my success. I love dancing and working out. I always have. I work out my mind and my body and at the same time more often than not. I highly recommend pilates and yoga. I recommend changing up cardio. I recommend pushing yourself a little more than what is comfortable. I recommend rewarding yourself with gentle and deep stretches for at least 8 minutes. It feels so good. Regular exercise reduces your pain tolerance so you need less pain medication which is excellent.
Exercise should be your reward for working hard and/or keeping you sharp and looking young. I don't look my age. I don't feel my age. It's because I am completely committed to being fit. I don't work out for hours anymore. I don't recommend that. Work out one hour 4 days a week. Make it fun!! It's just moving your body in space. It's time to connect with yourself and with others.

Don't do exercises because they are the latest fad or because so many others are doing it. Find an exercise that you love doing and you'll stick with it. Myself, I hate exercises where I'm jumping up and down so Zumba is out, hate kick-boxing, treadmills,  etc (not knocking these if you enjoy it, do it). For me, I love ballroom dancing, pilates and yoga. I have seasonal activities that I enjoy, swimming, cross-country skiing and bike riding (real bike, not a stationary one) Since I enjoy them, I stick with exercising, it's not difficult do to and I look forward to it.

Re: New Year resolutions for staying fit?

I meant to say that exercise increases your pain tolerance requiring less medication. It's healthier for you.

*manage instead of mange -- oops!

Add variety to your work out about every 6 to 8 weeks. If you plateau (no results, could decline) then it's harder to get out. Change your routine. Your body is incredibly adaptive. There are so many benefits to regular exercise. Your entire life is better for it!

I've been feeling it virtually my entire life. I used to be made fun of but now I'm the one laughing but it's join me - don't make fun of me - join me. You can do it.

    1 hour - 4 days a week - that's what I do - it's enough to maintain

5 days a week to improve

Eat sensibly - mindfully. There are so many work outs out there. Very easy for variety and interest.

Start slow. Increase as you go along - as it becomes easy. Challenge yourself but don't "kill" yourself. Fun is #1. A little more work than is comfortable.

You will know the difference b/t a good sore and a bad sore. There is a distinct difference.

I am going to stay fit by adopting a long-lost and forgotten menthod: COMMON SENSE. It goes something like this:

    1. Exercise regularly, doing something strenuous that fits my mindset and body type. Do so at a rate that is reasonalby aligned with my caloric intake

    2. Remember that cheeseburgers and pizza are OK as long as they are not a regular part of my caloric intake, and are not overdone repeatedly

    3. Continue eating nutritious foods regularly, ensuring that I am hitting each of the vital food groups on a consistent basis

    4. Sleep

I quit smoking 19 years ago, became vegetarian 13 years ago. Cut out processed foods, restaurant food (too much sodium and fat). This is just some of the things I have done but not as New Year resolutions. They were decisions I had made at certain times of the year.

Everything in moderation is the key.  Now where is that pint of cookie dough ice cream?  LOLCool

I don't know anyone who has ever made a resolution and stuck with it. The novelty eventually wears off and it is soon forgotten.Sealed

We're with Bruno here in the kargiver household with a mostly nutritious menu, no demonizing of the tasty occassional treats, and we keep moving.

As per Dr. Oz's suggestion, we tried quinoa (keen' wa), and we LOVE it.  You have to really rinse it well to get a naturally occuring bitter coating off before you cook it, but it's quick, easy, and is a great stir-in for soup, replacement for rice, etc - it resembles cous cous (pasta).  It's a tasty "new" (ancient, really) way to get whole grains in your diet.

Here's its nutritional profile and description: Quinoa description
And, here's where and what we order:  Organic Eden Quinoa on Amazon

I've put on about 8 lbs since the Summer from Thanksgiving and Christmas chow downs.  Time to cut back sensibly and get back into my regular workout schedule.

A random date on the calendar is not motivation.  Jan 1 is just that, another day.
