Gossip websites spreading rumors about students

The Boston Globe today reports that the website Juicy Campus helps college students spread secrets and lies - and ruin one another's reputations.

What do you think about websites like this?

Have you posted comments about someone on this site or a similar site?

With all the ways young people can bully each other on the Internet, what do you think should be done?

Like a bad TV or radio show. If you don't like the content just change the channel. Of course everyone is probably looking at the government for help, per usual.

Also, the colleges should just add this website to the list of websites that are not accessable on their server(like porn). They have a right (just like employers) to limit content.

Yes, there is freedom of speech, but there should be limits. This is slander/bullying and should be inaccessible on campus networks at the least. It's not okay and the people who run it and the people who post on it are lowlife scum.

I think a website like Juicy Campus who is looking to operate as a for Profit organization, really needs to require registration, ID verification and moderate. That really can only be done through passing laws.

I am against banning ANY website and they are currently on firm legal grounds, but there are requirements that can be opposed through legislation.

That all being said, no one should let anything being said about them on a gossip website bother them too much, no matter how nasty it may sound. If it does bother you, then there may be some truth to the gossip, and perhaps it reflects a behaviour that you need to fix.

As a recent college grad, I consider myself lucky to have gotten out before this site went public! I checked out my college's site, and was disappointed not only that they had a page, but in my fellow students for what they were posting. I would think that by 19 years old, a person should know better then to partake in something like this. I am absolutly disgusted by this site, the guy who created it, and this generation in general. This is unacceptble.

It would be hard enough for a mature adult to not be hurt and angered by such awful comments, but impressionable and possibly depressed or insecure students? I would have been devastated if this were around when I was in college. The anonymity of the comments adds fuel to the fire.

But even judging from the horribly insulting comments regularly left on boston.com, how can any of us be surprised by it? This kind of cruelty should not be given a public forum. This can lead to all sorts of anguish and as someone else mentioned, mental health problems and possible suicide attempts. People have to be careful how they use their words. If there is no accountability, they will write whatever they want.

People act a certain way and expect not to be called out for it or not have to take responsiblity for the behavior. Some of the cotent is uncalled for, downright mean, and sometimes incorrect. I'd bet that a lot of the posts are based in truth.

Thank you JuicyCampus for at the very least providing entertainment in a far too Politically Correct socierty.

    Well said kathode.

I checked out the site and it is disgusting. Free speech is one thing. You cross the line, however, when you hurt another human being. We really need some cyberlaw to prevent sites such as Juicy Campus to even exist. They defame and insult others and serve no good purpose whatsoever.

In response to the comment made by BigLeagues that one should just ignore the comments or if you are bothered by them, then there must be some truth to them. It is great you have such a thick skin but many more do not. And even if some may be true how horrible to post such crap about another person for all to see? How about defamatory comments should never be posted about another person period? We are talking about ruining the reputation of another person. Understand?

The creator of the site calls it "entertainment". I am sure he does his parent's proud.

I know I'm going to sound like an old guy here but so be it. My wife and I have 4 teenagers at home and I can truly say this generation has to be the most selfish and disrespectful generation in history. It is a constant battle to keep our 4 minions in line given what they are exposed to on facebook, at school, and anywhere outside of our home where other teens lurk.
The cowardice of these posts is what I find most offensive.

I agree, Samsdad. And, I'll add immature to your list of less than admirable qualities found so frequently among young adults today. We have two college students ourselves...it is hard and constant work to keep them heading in the right direction.

And, it doesn't say much for the quality of education at most high schools and colleges if so many students are intolerant of individual difference and have that much time on their hands.

I don't see what's new here. This is graffitti on a bathroom wall.

Someone says something without indentifying her/himself or providing a third party source by which one can independently verify.

    It's meaningless.

I love all the comments about "I checked it out and it was awful" Of course the site is childish, immature, and crass. So don't look at the site if you don't like it. I personally did NOT check it out; I will leave that to the small minded people who are interested in such things. There is an X-rated video store not too far from my house. Really, it's not that difficult to walk past without going in.

The sad discovery here is the answer to the age old question - What kind of person are you when no one is looking?? For the contributers to this site the answer is not very pretty.

I think this type of site is a really bad thing. The problem is the actual names of people are used, and the whole world can view these sites. I've seen Craiglist and this is not the same thing - Craiglist is some person venting about some anonymous person-that's okay with me - that's getting something off your chest without hurting someone else. This is bullying and hurtfulness at its extreme-this is cruel. Bathoom wall? In Junior High when I was young, but not after that - not even close to this. People names should not be allowed on these sites, and the site owners should be legally liable (in other words, they can be sued) for anything on there that is slanderous/libel. I'd be all for lawyers going after these site owners.

As someone who worked as library security in college I laughed out loud in agreement on this comment! Luckily I didn't have to clean it up and the truth of the matter is that once someone sues for defamation it will all come down!

Good Lord you people are pathetic. Yes the website is really stupid and horrible, but if any reasonable person takes it as fact or in any sense of reality they need to get thier head checked. What ever happened to a person being responsible for themselves and knowing that things said behind thier back by cowards should be ignored. So what is someone sleeped with so and so, when this society bases who does what to whom in bed then we are all going down.

Its a fine example of Human Nature - basically, if given the chance to get away with something, the majority of the human race will take that chance - be it cheat on taxes, cheat on partners, steal, lie...or gossip without being held responsible. This upcoming generation of kids have been raised with the whole "its not my fault" attitude. How many would post these things if, say, they had to give up a car, laptop, cell phone, iPod, job...to the person they posted vile things about? (you can post about John, you just have to give him your car when you're done:)...the answer is: None. The other basic truth is that sometimes you don't have to know a person for them to be vicious about you - some people simply don't like others because of mode of dress, hair color, race, or religion. We pretend to be tolerant because that is what society demands (and we don't want to look different). Sites like Juicy Campus allow the uglier side of human nature to surface....and it is always shocking to see it.

For the record, I have not checked out the site, nor do I intend to. Since you can't legislate human nature, a law would be pointless. You simply have to trust that some people are mature enough to surpress their nastier sides.

Actually, I'm currently in college in Mass and one of my good friends is a target on this site. He is constantly being ripped apart. All of the things that are written aren't true, except the ones that make fun of his homosexuality. He is gay, but all of the ridicule that comes along with it is false and unnecessary. He has no need to "take account for his actions" if it is only a lifestyle he leads, and is in every way allowed to do so. I'm positive that a lot of the hatred comes from the fact that he is gay. It's truly not fair and it's not entertainment especially if you're at the other end.

People do and say ridiculous things to hurt others, and this is a perfect case of not truly understanding the power of words. It hurts the victims and it hurts being a friend and not being able to stop it or say anything to make these insanely vicious things go away.

The cyberlaw is 12 years old - perfect opportunity for some law students to make a name for themselves and get this situation sorted out. Before we had Libel laws, Newspapers could print anything they wanted. Courts stepped in and put forth some regulations on what can be said and how it can be said. Just a matter of time.

Okay Law Students - go do your thing.
