    Placecard/Name cards - write out or print out?

    Hi guys,

    I ordered these placecard holders and they come with blank place cards, my venue also gives us blank place cards.  My question is, can I write the name of the guests, table number/name on the card or do I have to find a way to have these printed out (they are small)?  The card has lines so I'm afraid the printing may be trial and error to get them lined up right and there are not much extra cards.  If I write them, can I print or should I cursive the names?

    Card says something like:
    Name___________________
    Table__________________

    I will find a way to get them printed if that is the proper way to do it.  I just have no idea what I've seen at the many weddings I've been to.  I never paid attention really and it was never a big deal to me either way, but that could just be me..

    Thanks!

    We handwrote the guest name/table number on our cards.  Actually, my mother did.  She has beautiful handwriting and was willing to do it.  It was much easier than trying to format the printer and wasting a few on trial and error.  If I remember correctly, I think all of the weddings I have been to had handwritten escort cards.

    My mother handwrote mine as well.

    That's great!  It would be much easier and my handwriting is good, at least I think so.  haha - did you print the names or cursive write them?  I'm so used to printing now but I think my penmanship was good and just need to get back into it a bit before doing it if I do that instead.  All I really sign now is my name.  :-)

    I bought a set from Staples that was meant to be put through a printer, but I think they can be handwritten or printed, no matter at all.

    a friend of mine said she did that too.. and there were instructions on how to print them out for hers, but since mine came separate and no instructions, i'm afraid!  :-)

    My mom wrote in curive - I think either is fine, whatever you think looks best.

    I would think handwriting would be just fine.  I agree trying to get them lined up in a printer could be a nightmare.

    If you look at place card samples on the Knot, you'll probably see just as many that are written in print or cursive or calligraphy if you want to get fancy. I think it depends on the style of your wedding. If you're having something that's formal, I'd say cursive, but if it's more casual, I'd say print.

    Yeah, mine came with very helpful instructions and a website for perfect results.  It had a template that correlated with the type of cards you purchased.  I wouldn't do it without that.  Just write them clearly.  No one will notice one way or the other unless they can't figure out where they're sitting. ;)

    ONE MORE THING!!!  Whether you print, write, type, by hand or machine, please remember that many of your guests are getting old and cannot see as well as they used to.  The names and table numbers should be big enough and bold enough to be read easily, even from beyond a normal reading distance!!!

    Re: Placecard/Name cards - write out or print out?

    Also, I put a sticker on the back of each placecard to indicate the meal choices of the people on them.  Red stars for meat, gold stars for turkey, green star for the one veggie meal, and purple for the 2 people who didn't want sauce on their meat.  That way, the service went much faster; the staff didn't have to ask each person what they ordered.  Of course, you just have to let them know what the key is to the stickers.  And, if a couple as one of each, of course they still have to ask who got which dish, but overall, it really streamlined things.

    (I stole this idea from a wedding we went to the month before ours!)

        Printed by hand rather than cursive  unless your  handwriting is super clear.  Or machine print.

         No calligraphy or fancy stuff -sometimes   there are difficulties due to the low light/ candle light of dining  areas,  and  people don't pull out the reading glasses they left home -  Function before prettiness.

    Re: Placecard/Name cards - write out or print out?

    Thank you guys!  All of this helps a lot!  Kargiver - our place actually gave us a legend to use on the back of the cards:

    C = Chicken

    F = Fish

    V = Vegetarian

    K = Kids

    So I will also be writing that on the back..  It's formal, evening, but not super formal.. so I'll test it out and will either print or do a neat cursive that's legible.  I'll be sure to put the table number and name as big as possible too! :-)

    Thanks!!!

    "and purple for the 2 people who didn't want sauce on their meat."

    Kargiver, you are a very, very nice person...  I think I would have scoffed (privately but fairly vehemently) at the thought that someone would actually ASK for "meat with no sauce" unless there was an allergy issue (did that sauce have nuts, peanuts or milk in it???)

    And that, ladies and gentleman, is why
    a) I'm not a wedding planner and
    b) why we did a stations with lots of choices style for the meal!

    Hah--Kar you are so nice!  I had 3 sauce requests too, and at that point I was so frazzled with all the wedding requests, I was like: Please ask your server to plate your dish without sauce.  I didn't have the energy to figure out that one myself.  Sigh.

    [And, no, these weren't food allergies, just preferences.  2 requests were for kids, but 1 adult asked too.  Kids got pasta in tomato sauce.  1 mom asked for alfredo instead, but I didn't switch it.  We got tomato b/c another kid was lactose intolerant.  Another mom wanted sauce-less pasta, and I told her to ask the server.  Frankly, I found the al fredo request kind of irritating.  I already banned all peanuts, strawberries, and honey from the ENTIRE wedding menu due to that kid's allergies. I'm not also changing  all of the kids' entrees b/c the kid happens to prefer al fredo.]

    Sigh.  Vent over.

    aww :)

    ...frankly it wasn't really about the sauce for me.  the no-sauce camp were pretty high maintenance guests in general with many special requests about the whole event.  I guess by the time we made it to the sauce requests, I was already tired of it.  :p

    I shudder to think about my reaction if one guest asked me to change my entire menu because she (or her child) happened to prefer alfredo sauce to tomato.

    Actually, I know exactly what I would say, but it's not appropriate for posting on these boards.  Sealed
