    Need Honeymoon Ideas!!!

    Hi,

Our wedding is in March 2010 and we havent a clue where would be the best place to go on our honeymoon? Any ideas? Probably all-inlcusive and somewhere neither one of us has been to which would exclude Jamaica, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, and Canada! We originally were thinking of going to St. Marteen but now we are not really sure because we keep hearing about other places like Aruba, Turks & Caicos and other islands as well. Another option we were considering was a cruise. We cant be gone for more than 7 days maximum because we have a 5 year old. Help!

ARUBA!!!!!  The trade winds are to die for and kept my DH cooler and happy in heat that otherwise would have been too hot for him (not me, though!).  The water, the private beaches (low-rise hotel area where the all-inclusive Divi is), snorkling (I'd never been), horseback riding (new to me, too).......WOW.  We went for 7 days, and it was great.  I wish it could have been two weeks, but I think no matter how long we were there I'd want to stay longer.

DH thought he hated all travel.  Now, he can't wait to go back to Aruba...happily for me, huh?! ;)

My fiance and I went to Secrets Capri in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico because we found an incredible deal, and it was unbelievable!  We recently recommended it to a friend of ours, and they ended up going there on their honeymoon.  It is all inclusive, five star, adults only (but not one of those naked resorts), and absolutely amazing.  I booked through www.bookit.com, and found some really amazing deals there.  Good luck!

I just realized you wanted to exclude Mexico because you had already been there, but I think the Secrets chain has other resorts around the Carribbean...good luck!

Divi Aruba All-Inclusive is really nice, AND March is the driest month in Aruba!! That is your best bet IMO! :) The rooms are not glamorous, but they are big, clean and the views are incredible. You are literally right on the beach. The Divi also has 5 great restaurants and great beach side bars. The beach is amazing and they have three pools to choose from. One thing I loved about Aruba is that it is a very safe island so you can leave the resort and explore all you want! Another plus side is that you can get a direct flight that is only 4 hours long!!!

We stayed at the Bucuti and will stay there again!!!  You have picked a fabulous place. One word of advice, though.  The halls are protected by locked doors on either end that slam pretty hard.  Our first room was at the end of the hall, and we were up all night with the noise!  They moved us to a "center" room with a patio.  It was MUCH quieter, but we had to wait for another night to get it because they were totally booked.  Make sure in advance you are not next to the end of the hallway!!

The service is fabulous, and make sure you get their "Happy Honeymoon" package.  We opted for the 5 course beach dinner instead of the sunset cruise, and we LOVED it. It was a highlight of our honeymoon.  We also went on the 1/2 day of free snorkeling.  That was awesome, too.  The honeymoon package also comes with free t-shirts and coupons to attractions.  We used the 10% off coupon for horseback riding.  It was awesome.  We also enjoyed the goody basket with champagne, cheese, snacks, etc.  Rooms have a micro-fridge so you can take leftovers "home."  Like the Divi, the rooms are not glamorous, but clean and roomy.

    Enjoy!!!

The pool did look just as nice in person, but with the ocean just steps away we couldn't resist the turquoise waters, sand, and gentle surf!  We walked 3 miles up the beaches and swam back to the hotel every morning and swam at least 2 hours during the day...no time for the pool!

We found the beach and water in front of the Bucuti to be our favorite section of Eagle Beach (shared by the Divi and other "low rise" hotels with private beaches).

Paris. Leave the all-inclusives to the Revere/Meffa types.

Hmm, I was born and raised in Newton, and just bought a house there, and I love All-Inclusives. Don't know what Revere or Medford has to do with it.

Because you're there with hundreds of others who want to make sure they eat and drink their money's worth. Quantity over quality, which entails going to the beach at 10AM and seeing the tiki bar filled with people sucking down their all-inclusive foo-foo drinks at an alarming clip. By early afternoon the stagger-fest is in full throttle. Possibly to some this is deemed romantic, give me a cafe overlooking the Seine or the Eiffel Tower any day.

Chiming in late (and not touching the all-inclusive controvery) but I love St. Martin.  My aunt and uncle have been going for 20 odd years and I've been several times.  I would not go there for an all-inclusive experience but it's very easy to get around there and there are lots of great beaches and restaurants if you are willing to do a little research (though I totally understand that you may not want to do any real planning, hence the big upside of an all-inclusive).  The closest thing to an all-inclusive in St. Martin would be to stay by Orient Beach since  it's like a little village and you can pretty much do whatever you want there.  If you reconsider St. Martin, I'm happy to give tips.

Same thing.  It's one island that is half Dutch, half French.  St. Martin is the French side and St. Maarten is the Dutch side.  The Dutch side is a little more laid back and the French side is arguably a bit nicer but you can easily pass back and forth without even noticing you changed sides of the island.

I second St. Martin.  My husband and I went there before we were married (this is where he proposed to me), and we stayed on the French side at Orient Beach (the L'Alamanda resort).  We rented a car and explored the island each day, it was very safe.  An all-inclusive is not necessary on St. Martin as there are so many great restaurants to eat at, and we did not have any plans specifically, we would just drive to a different town if we wanted to eat there and find a restaurant.  Our favorit was L'Alabama which is in Grand Case, but we also had great food at the restaurant at the Casino on the Dutch side (name eludes me).

We just got back from St. John and it was amazing!  We stayed at a villa, but we spent some time at the Westin Resort and we're thinking of staying there next time we go.  It was beautiful.

They do have packages, I don't think they do full inclusive packages, but they have a honeymoon package that includes free breakfast daily, free use of watersport equipment, a 3-course dinner on the beach for a night, and other stuff.  Also, they have free beach shuttles for guests (we had to rent a car to get around since we stayed in a villa and it was expensive).

??  I don't know of any stigma or stereotyped group of people who supposedly prefer all-inclusives.  Very strange comment if I do say so.

I know a couple who went to Paris, it's not a bad suggestion (if you don't mind smokers everywhere).  But, an all-inclusive resort looks fabulous to me.  The only reason we didn't do it was DH was afraid we'd overspend on food and drinks we didn't actually eat or drink.  I was for either way.  Turns out if you eat at your hotel's restaurants/bars you can just charge it to your room so you don't need to carry your wallet around either way.

You might also want to look into Thailand - the rates are extremely cheap for luxury hotels right now, and it might be worth it if you can get a deal on the flight.  If that is too far then what about Costa Rica or Belize?

I know, Kar, wasn't that statement a little ridiculous?

I would love to go to Paris one day, but I don't think I could handle it for my HM. I need to relax. Yes, we are going to Disney for a week, but then we will have a week in Key West to lay by the pool/beach all day, everyday :)

It sure was!  I have NO IDEA where that idea came from...??

We needed to relax, too.  DH enjoyed that the most, totally turning off work figuratively and emotionally.  We had 2 weeks, as well. Aruba week 1, HOME week 2.  It was great.  We are spoiled, huh?! ;)

    Re: Need Honeymoon Ideas!!!

I also have to recommend Europe. I went to Amsterdam and although it wasn't all-inclusive, it wasn't incredibly expensive either. The most expensive thing was the plane ticket. Museums and canal rides were about $8-$10 per person. Beer was also inexpensive but great quality. There's so many restaurants to choose from, every cuisine you can imagine, and they're all reasonably priced. People were really nice and friendly, and it seemed they could all speak French, Dutch, English and German.
Lovely experience if you're like me and more of a city person than a beach person.

As for the stigma of the all-inclusive tropical resort, I've heard of it and although you will encounter those who fit the description, in this economy all sorts of people are taking advantage of that kind of deal. There's also a stigma about people who go oncruises, but you don't see that stopping anyone. Worrying about what others think and what's the fashionable way to vacation is something left to those with a life of leisure, the rest of us shouldn't give it another thought. The only time one really should avoid the all-inclusive is during spring break.

Thanks folks for all the suggestions! My fiance and I decided to go with a 7 night Southern Caribbean Cruise....we can't wait. We will be touching ground in Barbados, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, St. John, and Antigua....I can't wait! Hopefully it will be as memorable as some of your honeymoons!
