GOOD NEWS!!  REALLY GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!!  This just in from my SIL:

Well, surgery went better than the surgeon expected. He was able to get out 95% of the tumor which is more than he thought that he would and it went quicker than he had thought  it would. Molly may have a slight limp on her left side which is not bad considering. He said that it was a complete resection and could not physically see any visual signs left of the tumor but they are going to do an MRI tomorrow. They are just going to watch for swelling and bleeding tonight and then for the recovery and some physical therapy. She will need about 6 weeks of radiation in a month or so and then we hope we're done with it. Thanks for sending all that good energy to Molly.

Lily, I know!  I just tried calling Mr. JBar with the news and I started crying.  And I am NOT a cryer.

I'm thrilled to read the great update, JBar!  Continued good thoughts being sent her way that tomorrow's MRI shows nothing, and that her recovery, P/T and the radiation go well.

The miracles of modern medicine combined with the power of prayer provided by the Love Letter aficionados. That tumor never stood a chance!

Elekktra, I know right?  I just spoke with her nurse and barring complications she'll be moved out of ICU as early as tomorrow.  She still has a lot of work ahead of her but thanks to the intervention of the Lovelies, whatever higher power we believe in took special care of our girl.

Ugh! Thoughts and prayers headed your way...
Friends of mine have a child w medulloblastome and being treated @ Childrens (had surgery there) and then Radiation at MGH where there is a specific proton machine for medulloblastoma.  We are in the medical Mecca here in New England..Hope all goes well.  Childrens aslso has tons of info on their website re places to stay, RonalD McDonald and many other very inexpensive/discounted places for family.
    God Bless

Thank you maggieagnes - I agree that this is the best part of the world for medical treatment.  Molly was well taken care of by the Mayo though and she's through the worst.  I hope that your friends' child is equally fortunate.

Mayo is top-notich, so I'm glad she could have her surgery there. Sounds like a good outcome so far. I'm encouraged. I'm not a cryer, either, and I don't even know your family, but this has brought me tears. I'm praying for a good outcome for your niece.

Not to knock Mass Hospitals, but you might want to consider NYC - Sloan Kettering is the best in the business

Thanks for the VT update, JBar. I'm from a little south of there, but know it to be beautiful country. I'll bet those woods were wet walking; they've had a huge amount of rain and an unusually damaging snowmelt.

Please keep us posted on the young lady. I'll be thinking of her successful surgery and imagining her thriving.

I meant to add that when I was young, Vergennes was considered a "mill town" with tough kids. It also housed the youthful offenders facility. The last time I drove through I counted four French restaurants or bistros. How things do change.

JBar, I just saw this thread and will start praying for Molly. You didn't mention how old she is or what type of tumor and stage it is...Believe it or not, that's necessary info.

My pastor's granddaughter Ava was diagnosed with a glioblastoma just about a year ago. She was 5 and that type of tumor (same as Ted Kennedy's) is rare at that age and highly resistant to treatment. Not sure if it's a GB, but if it is, I can get all the information that Ava's dad collected. I know they were planning to travel to a specialist in NJ, but never made it.

There is a pediatric trial happening now at either Children's or BWH with specific brain tumor types as well and I know that Ava's family was advised to contact either St Judes or Johns Hopkins...

Ava's dad, Josh, wrote an amazing blog while she was ill that has myriad recommendations, too. You can find it at www.joshuajoelhunter.blogspot.com. The blog's titled 'The Daily Philosophizer' and the entries about Ava's illness begin at end of June, 2010. I'll FB message you my info in case you need anything!!!

PS--- I wrote this post before reading through page 4... so HAPPY for Molly and her family. Once I saw it was an astrocytoma, I knew there was hope. Let Molly know from me that walking with a left-sided limp is no biggie--I've done it for a lifetime and God willing, she will too! ((((Hugs for all of you))))
    Love, Cari
