I think the sentence should fit the crime...he should have to work with actual disabled people for many many years. Just think with all that muscle he could lift a lot of wheel chairs over curbs etc.

Don't worry.... I speak only for myself when I say that the majority of Firefighters are nothing but wonderful people - HEROS!!!  This idiot is an exception.  I feel badly that it does, unfortunately, reflect badly on the entire FD.

    Stay safe!

A "Yes" vote on 1 in November will force local governments' hand on things like this.

They won't be able to ignore their constituents any longer.  You don't have to put up with your money being used this way.

Why make it a union issue! the union is not his boss, they don't pay his salary and they don't allow his disability claim or have any input at all. Whenever something comes out in the BFD the union is always the ones being questioned when, in fact, the person(s) THAT SHOULD BE QUESTIONED ARE HIS BOSSES: THE COMMISSIONER AND THE MAYOR. They pay his salary and they approved his disability claim. Unions represent all employees to ensure fairness, but the firefighters union hasn't supported this case so why attack them.

This is a decades-old systemic problem in Boston.  As a college intern 25 years ago, I worked for Mass Taxpayers Foundation looking at the rate of disability among firefighters.  The findings were astonishing to a young grad who had yet to experience the grip of and entitlement of unions.  Like this story, the analysis was used in a Globe Spotlight report and hearings were held on Beacon Hill,  And my Dad just laughed. "You watch", he said, "they'll show up in full firefighing gear and nothing will happen". He was right.
The system we have today (corrupt doctors, retirement/disability shenanigans to maximize tax free pay-outs) persists.  Like police details and Turnpike tolls, a good portion of the taxes we pay will continue to fund extortionate practices engineered by greedy unions.
And the saddest part -- our firefighters are the best but continually tainted by the union-fueled practices of craven and dishonest bad apples.

Wow, look at the outrage this has precipitated!  By all appearances, this man is a scumbag and has made off with about $15,000 of the taxpayer's money, and people are screaming for him to give it all back, plus a penalty, and do some jail time to boot.

Yet when hedge fund managers get a tax cut so huge that 25 of them have their taxes reduced by an average of about $100,000,000 each, there's nary a peep.  The state got raped to the tune of billions by Bechtel, Modern Continental, et al. on the Big Dig ... .  And when tens of billions disappear unaccounted for into the pockets of Halliburton and other contractors in Iraq, silence.

Bottom line is this is chump change.  Let the wheels of justice grind him slowly and surely into dust, while we focus on really important things.

    Like Neil Entwistle.  NOT!

Why do we even bother to make a stink?  It will be business as usual as the corrupt politicians and unions sweep this one under the rug.  There will be a few weeks of outcry and this leech will go back on permanant disability.
I am working for the city, fresh out of college.  I asked myself why do I have to pay union fee, i dont' need the union.  I have the skills, and put in 110% everyday.  But w/o the union, my salary would stay put, the union negotiate my raise, which about 2-3%.

I agree that unions are beneficial to workers -- no doubt about that. Before I retired I worked a union job for 30 years with a decent wage and paid medical. We got the wages and benefits, but we didn't try to run the business.

BUT the patrolmens and firefighters unions in Boston are completely out of control. They defend even the most blatant wrong-doing. Part of the problem, of course, is that our elected leaders let those unions get out of control. Now it's their job to take back control of the departments for the taxpayers.

The problem is that with the exception of the Chief and 2 deputy chiefs, all other  members of the BFD are members of the same union. So a union issue is, for all intents and purposes, a BFD issue. Firefighters, if you want respect it is time to stand up to your union. Say yes to drug testing now, remove the demands to link drug tasting to raises, and step to the front to remove, prosecute, and ostracize members who violate the public trust. Only when the public sees this happening will you get the respect you desire.

Why do you only give 110%? Why not 120%. If there were no unions you would have a pay scale like the private industry has. Unions protect the weak.

It seems to me that maybe FX is trying to create a "Rescue Me" show for Boston.  You can't dream up this kind of drama for T.V. You have drugs, alcohol...guys on disability so they can hit the gym all day for bodybuiding competitions. You can only wonder what else goes on in the firehouse that doesn't make the papers...

Do you really believe you would never get another raise if it wasn't for the union?  You would get raises based on your performance instead of getting the same 2-3% raise that the guy next to you who does nothing all day gets.  Wouldn't you rather be rewarded for your efforts?

I think we should follow George Carlin's (RIP) advice when asked how he would deal with the drug smugglers bringing drugs into the country that eventually wind up in the hands of our kids ... he suggested that we start executing the bankers that launder the drug money ... and not only that, we should broadcast the execution LIVE, at half time on Monday Night Football ... he also suggested that we could charge via pay per view and use the proceeds to start to pay down the national debt ...

so lets start with these fraudulent doctors that are signing off on these "disabilities" ... somewhere there is a doctor that looked at this guy and said PERMANANTLY DISABLED ???  are you F**** ing kidding me ... lets start with his license and go from there ...

Count me among those that think Unions are absolutely KILLING this  country  ... need proof ..? .. take a look at all the cars you see on the road when you drive to work tomorrow ... assuming that your job has not gone overseas YET ... yep, toyotas , hondas, nissan's, even a Hyundai or two ... wonder why america can't compete any more ? ... there was a time when unions were needed ... when workers truely were abused and needed protection ... not any more , not here .. that has all changed ... now, we over pay for poor services , poor products, poor performance, and shoddy workmanship, and these unions enable it and condone it ... need more proof ?  two words BIG DIG ...

so .. do I think the disability claims should be denied ? .. I think Arroyo should be dipped in brown gravy, and locked in a room with a hungry wolverine that is high on angel dust ...

Seriously, I really think this guy should be jailed for fraud and so should the doctor. We have to start somewhere ... He should also be forced to pay back three times the amount of past payments ... This crap has got to stop and we have to STOP looking the other way ...

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL ???

FYI: this is a typical scenario: male, mid 30's, unemployed, big tall,  really buffed, gets "disabled" on his job (usually the back), constantly searches for percocets and vicodens and oxycontins, fights for years his disability "rights". Yeah, this species really exists, and they plague the doctors' offices and emergency rooms. This type actually thinks he's too good to work like the rest of us fools, and he would rather be supported by his wife while he awaits the big insurance payout. In the meantime, he goes hunting with his buddies, and splits wood. Yet he prefers to be supported by other people. In this case, he's a body builder.

And doctors are not really allowed to state what they think because they have to address pain. So these individuals get enormous tests done in order to "work the system" and meet the insurance's guidelines. They will stop at nothing. They have no shame. They are the reason why medical and disability insurances are so unaffordable.

Let's blame the doctor who's too freakin' sick of seeing this leach on his already hectic schedule day after day. The doctor probably got sick of sending him to every possible neurologist, specialist, and so on, only for the leach to come back for more Percs and complain some more. Probably just the sight of his name on his schedule makes the doctor nauseus.

Our current system actually encourages this type of leaching  because the LAWYERS want it this way. As a doctor, you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

    Cheers!
I agree, it is deplorable that anyone gets away with that.  If he can lift the weights to get muscles like that, he can work as a firefighter.  If not, an independent doctor should prove otherwise.
Honestly!  His arrogant, flaunting, catch me if you can attitude adds another black mark on the door of firefighters. So many good, honest men who do put their lives on the line every day should not be lumped in with the few bad apples.

He needs to be dealt with swiftly and publicly and there needs to be reform within the union and the state when it comes to handing out disabilities.  The doctors who write the fake letters and make  up non existent injuries should lose their license to practice.
