I voted today. Who did you vote for?

My aunt needed me to help her carry bags down to the local laundry depot so it wasn't much of a choice if my main goal every day is not to get into any kind of hotspot argument .

It wouldn't kill you to get out of that little comfort zone routine of yours; going to the library computer room every day looking for a job.

Excercise your civil duty;  blah blah blah.

Yeah I hear enough of that garbage on television all the time.  I don't need it from her.  In my city up north,  ( Haverhill ) I voted for Jim Fiorentini,  I don't really know him or his politics besides being one of only a couple of democrats I've bothered to vote for.

The ballot up here says you're supposed to vote for multiple candidates running for things like city council, etc.  I just voted for the one top person on the ballot and turned it in to the polling staff and got the hell out of there as soon as I could once my aunt finished.

Ugh.  What a boring off-election year of no-body candidates and incumbents.

You could have just pretended to vote; who would have known?  Voting for someone you don't know anything about it is worse than pulling the curtain and feeding an empty ballot into the machine.

I'm not voting at all, by the way, but I don't have anyone breathing down my neck to do so, either.

I don't want to " work my way up " .

Work my way up to what exactly?   Corporate CEO.

The majority of people usually get canned, laid off or they quit.
It's the small tiny percentages that get promoted.

Even something like bonuses aren't for
( as one BP oil exec labled )

" Small People "

If I'm working a job. It's a basic clerk/inventory job.
It pays $12/$20 dollars an hour.

It gives me one to two days off.

I save up what I can for as few years as I care to and move on to some other kind of job if my lifetime opportunity doesn't by then come.

Any other type of job.  I either won't get it, don't want it.  Or if I end up working it; I won't be there for long.   Either by my own doing or someone else's.

By my own stated perspective; I obviously won't care.  If anything, I'll be glad.

Which I bought a few weeks ago for $10 dollars
( plus tax, shipping and handling costs which totaled $15).

Get a used bike and ask for the day shift!   If you get in ... you won't regret it.  The state moves slow,  it might take about 6 months to get an interview anyway.

A used bike from where?

The Salvation Army?  I only see clothes in their store.

I've yet to see a bike.  Or a parking lot with used cars in them.

I remember those goverment auctions advertised on TV where you can buy seized stuff for next to nothing.

Haven't seen them lately.

Guess they don't exist anymore.
Listen to me, I've been on the planet a lot longer than you, I've learned these things the hard way.   Posted by dog-lady
What exactly do you mean " the hard way "?

Something tells me you've had it easy as most other white people do.
( of race of people I assume you are one )

Not to make it a race issue intentionally.

I've been turned down for far too many menial jobs like clerk jobs.
A moron can be an office clerk;  an office assistant; a mail clerk.

You know how many times I've applied to and have been turned down for those types?

I consider it menial.  Not unlike flipping burgers; sweeping floors; taking out garbage or washing dishes. The only difference is that - to me; it's what I call :  repsectable enough in the sense that (#1) they offer higher than minimum wage.

As a minority even before the '08 financial collapse; it was nearly impossible to get a line of credit; a loan of any type or a student loan for college.

White people ( to me ) seem to have very little to no problem getting them.

So let's review.

As a minority like me; the cards are inherently stacked against you in finding a job. Finding a way into college.  Owning a home. Buying a car.  Renting an apartment or simply succeeding in life.

It's not that easy.  It just isn't.  But while I don't put in as much effort as I once did when I was young and naieve; I put in effort where I care to. The rest of the time since each negative result proves me right; it's those times I say to myself " gosh; I'm sure glad I didn't go all in on that "

     - since I end up disappointed every time.

The real suprise will mean something when something ( if something ) finally goes right for me.

I don't want to go there, but ... not all white people have it easy!  A lot of things depend on who your parents were, regardless of color.  To some degree I believe in that old saying:  "Life is what you make it."
The real problem is you seem to feel like you are entitled to just waltz from deliberate unemployment into the first job your lordship does not deem below you. It doesn't work like that.  Posted by WhatDoYouWantNow
Employers can't have it both ways.

On the one hand; a lot of the jobs I would rather do are either obsolete or are being outsourced.

On the otherh and; a lot of these same jobs as you said have artificially higher than normal requirements like job experience ( +/- 5 years worth ) or a college degree.

Why put such ridiculous conditions on a job you can otherwise outsource or get rid of altogether?

It doesn't make any sense.   ( I say while being frustratingly frustrated. )

Yeah I am entitled.  At 38 years old I am entitled to start work somewhere doing something other than take out the garbage.  I do that at home for free because it's my responsibility.  I am entitled to do work other than wash dishes.  I do that at home for free; because it's my responsibility.  I am entitled to do something other than sweep and mop floors. I do that at home because ( as you guessed it ) I do that at home for free.

I don't want to be paid minimum wage for the same menial stuff I do at home.
It is beneath me.  Why is it beneath me?  I can clean up the house in less than 10 minutes; go back to watching television and forget about it.

Some moron business owner who's hired a bunch of illegal aliens can pay them virtually nothing because they don't know any better.

I know better.

I know that if I work anywhere for anything; it's going to be fair to me.
A fair wage for a fair amount of work.

Case Closed.

WDYWN, how much you want to wager he is one of "those" that is collecting for a fake disablility, getting welfare, food stamps etc.  No way any normal family would support a lazy layabout like him.  So to pass the day, he goes to the library and tries to put down anyone looking for a job to justify himself.  Makes me throw up in my mouth a little to think my tax dollars go to a thing like that.  Sadly he is not the only one, just the more loathsome one.  I will not post again about him since he has been on these boards for a long time and it is the same drivel everytime. If we all ignore him, maybe he'll go away.

ETA: I have to say throwing the race card in was new.  I would be embarrassed for him if I was black.

Never said I collected public benefits.  Unless you want to count the public/private funded local library I've been using since 2005 as a collection of a public benefit.

I did apply for unemployment benefits (2005) and was turned down.

So.

To set the record straight. It was what it was.

Luckily I never cared either way.   No water of my back.

A lot of morons say to people " get a job ".

Having absolutely no idea what the job market actually is.
Nor do they really care.

It's just easy to throw around that phrase.

You can be someone like me.  Or someone like the Occupy protesters.
I don't like them for who they are;  I'm sure they don't like me.

But what we have in common is a job market we can't fit into.
Employers don't want us.  And we don't want them ( or the flimsy low-class jobs they offer for next to nothing in salary ).

We should all be cryogenically frozen; placed in storage and be awakened years, decades, maybe centuries later when The United States is in a much better fiscal situation; carrying little to no debt and sustaining a growing economy where one can get a job if one wants to.
