Gov. Deval Patrick said Thursday he's looking into whetherhe can skirt the Legislature by unilaterally allowing illegalimmigrants to pay in-state tuition at state colleges.

    What do you think?

This is not a shock. Everyone in Mass was so quick to dismiss the republicans from the Govs office and get hypnotized by this guys eloquent and well versed, hope inspiring speeches at election time that they allowed themselves to forget what democrats typically do....spend OUR money on foolish give away programs. Good speeches don't make good leaders.

Sorta reminds me of another guy seeking office that makes those same "we can do it together" speeches....hmmmmmm.

A wonderful use of our tax dollars! I don't think State Schools should discriminate on the basis of whether or not the person is a citizen, but allowing an in-state tuition isn't right.

Perhaps Duval and some of his $ pals should set up a tuition scholorship fund with private dollars. This of course would be putting your money where your mouth is (instead of our money).

Could the Globe please stop calling ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS (undocumented). What part of illegal do we not understand.

If you want to become a citizen there is a process to follow. I dont want an illegal alien taking a classroom seat over a local kid. sorry they dont deserve it.

I no longer have a Boston globe paperboy. I have an illegal alien who delivers my paper.

Where will it end? At the border I hope.

What a complete and utter a$$. And he's doing this against the will of the Legislature? What gall! And this measure has already been defeated once! Unbelievable.

My taxes go up every year and this is what they are paying for?

I've really gotta convince the wife that it's time to get out of MA. This state has been going in the wrong direction for a long time - both politically and economically. And then there's lousy weather, corrupt politics, outrageous cost of living. Ugh.

Free in State tuition for illegal aliens? Why not free in State tuition for those of us living in NH and paying Mass State tax for most of our adult lives? I would think this would be a much more just policy.

Saw this on the Telegram and Gazette web page.

Seems like alot of people have had it with Massachusetts:

New Census figures confirm what Massachusetts political leaders havedreaded for years: The Bay StateÆs congressional delegation is likelyto shrink by at least one member after the 2010 Census ù with direimplication for the stateÆs congressional clout.

Figures this month, based on July 2007 statistics, confirm that thehistoric population shift to the South and West has continued. Censusprojections indicate a shift of nine House seats. Texas, which has 32House seats, will gain the most, and Florida, with 25 seats, could pickup enough to overtake New York, currently with 29 seats.

Massachusetts likely will lose one seat. If the Legislature runstrue to form, the shenanigans as the backroom crowd divvies up thecurrent 10 districts nine ways will be painful to behold.

And thanks to bonehead politicians like Cadillac Deval Patrick, I'm sure the exodus will continue.

No Deval, NO!NO NO NO NO. They are in the state of Massachusetts ILLEGALLY. PERIOD. BOTTOM LINE, WHICH MEANS GOVENOR, THEY ARE NOT LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE STATE, LET ALONE THE COUNTRY. ENOUGH. I AM A FORMER MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENT LIVING IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY AND BELIEVE ME, YOU DO NOT WANT TO OPEN THE FLOODGATES FOR MORE ILLEGALS FLOCKING TO OUR GREAT STATE. LET THEM PAY OUT OF STATE TUITION.

HOW DARE YOU OFFER THEM A BREAK AND NOT THE LEGAL CITIZEN FROM AZ, CA, VT, NH, ETC. GET MY POINT. AT LEAST THEY ARE BORN AND BRED CITIZENS AND IF THE STATE WANTS TO GIVE BREAKS, GIVE IT TO OUR LEGAL CITIZENS. BOTTOM LINE.

And people are shocked to hear this? No one should be surprised that this buffoon would be squandering the hard working taxpayers' dollars on this preposterous scheme. I have $92,000 in college loans for my childrenÆs college education; and they each have $17,000 worth of loans. Maybe the Commonwealth could pay these for us?-->-->

What's scarier than this proposal itself (in-state
tuition for illegals) is the prospect of Cadillac Deval
actually waking up, and pushing his agenda.

He's been complete failure for the first twelve months,
accomplishing nothing. If thei means that he's going
to begin to attempt to implement the "politics of hope"
then me and every taxpaying citizen just had a large
red bullseye attached to our wallets.

It is a horrible idea! We should not be paying for illegals to go to our schools. If he thinks the state can afford to allow illegals to pay in-state tuition, then why don't just reduce the in-state tuition for the legal citizens? He is working for the legal citizens of this state not the illegals. If he is allowed to do this, he should be removed from office for neglecting his citizens.

How can anyone establish legal residency when they are not here legally. I favor licensing them and some other things that are not well understood in the press or mainstream public opinion arenas but...

Thank you, Deval Patrick, for doing something right. And thank you for avoiding the abusive language advocated by so many on this board. "Illegal" is not a noun.

Most of those who would benefit from this move were small kids brought here by their parents. Unlike young people from other states, they don't have a home state in the US in which they are entitled to in-state tuition. And many of them have no family left in their "home" countries, indeed in some cases no memories of the places they were born. They are not at fault for their situations.

I approve highly of Patrick's proposal, and I hope it passes. Enlightenment has to start someplace.

DO THEY PAY TAXES? ABSOLUTELY ONLY THOSE WHO PAY STATE TAXES SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IN-STATE BENEFITS!

    IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

SAME AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL. WE'LL NEVER HAVE A BALANCED BUDGET AT EITHER LEVEL IF WE BLEED OUR MONEY AWAY TO THOSE WHO GIVE NOTHING B ACK.

After going through the process to legally have my husband , who was married to a legal US citizen before living in the United States, to become a legal immigrant and sign endless forms saying that he wouldn't use our system and to have to prove that we were financially stable to have him come here....I am ashamed by our Governor. There are legal, lawful ways to come into the states, to live here, work and pay taxes, for our Governor to allow illegal immigrants children to not pay and drain the system is a travesty. Why do we have a US Citizenship and Immigration Services? Is Deval going to be in charge of that next? The idea that he thinks that it is unfair for these children who already got 12 years of education free to have to pay the full out of state tutuion is backward and ludicrous.

    Excellent point!

The public school funding in this state is a mess. Overrides don't come close to what the schools really need for funding for basic education and localities cannot afford to give them more without endangering emergency services.

MA students have on average 30 children per classroom.....

There should be a larger focus on the public education in this state.

First off, why would we want to reward people who are doing something illegal? Where's the logic in that? Second, if he makes an end run around the legislature, he'll NEVER get anything he wants from them. He's off to a weak enough start as it is.

Then again, his whole campaign was "Together we can". He never specified what we can do together. Except pay $12,000 for drapes.

    I think I have a solution.

We'll create a fund that will pay for the education of illegal immigrants. All the MA citizens that wish to support this measure will have funds automatically deducted from their paychecks and placed into this account.

In addition, we'll start another fund to pay for the health care of illegal immigrants. Again, all supporters of these policies could donate money and the rest of the citizens won't be forced to pay.

    Sound good?

The funny thing is, all the big-mouth hypcorites wouldn't donate a dime.

Cadillac was a huge mistake to begin with and all the ding-bats that voted him in get ready, he is going to govern us back to the stone age. The only hope we have is that his 'good' buddy 'Osama' gets voted in and picks him for a cabinet position.

Just when we thought Mr Empty Suit a/k/a Deval Patrick was missing in action after one year as Governor, now he's poised to do some real damage to the fragile Massachusetts economy. Patrick may spend more money & do more damage in four years than Mike Dukakis did in 12 years. Together...we..can... all file for bankrupcy under a Patrick agenda to support illegal aliens - in our schools, on our streets, in our prisons & on our welfare roles! The question reamins: How much damage can he do in his three remaining years?

I totally agree. If Mass can afford $15 million a year to reduce tuition for illegals, then perhaps that money could reduce in-state tuition for the children of tax-payers who are having a harder and harder time making ends meet.

Or reduce tuition for out-of-state residents, and in-state residents to help citizens of the US out.

Citizens should benefit from tax dollars before anyone else. Is that crazy?

    THIS IS SICKENING, DEVAL!!!
