Obama says children should learn to speak Spanish

As a Rebuplican who does not want Obama to be able to sway potential McCain voters to his side, the grest thing about this quote is that it demonstrates the type of liberal elitist Obama is...We need to exploit this for all its worth.

Can't wait to see the ad:  Middle aged white guy in jeans and a work shirt standing in front of a pickup truck.  "Ahm a Murican, and I can't believe Obama is tellin' me mah kids should larn annuther language.  Fur ez Ahm concerned, mah kids don't need to larn no furn language lahk Spamish er French.  English has always been good ennuf fur me and it'll be good ennuf fur mah kids too, just ez long ez they larn to speak it ez good as me.  Let them liberul elitist kids git those high paying jobs in innernational trade with global corperations.  Mah kids'll take over the family bizzness sellin' pig manure, an' they'll never leave Murica fur anything anyway.  Ah never did.

"An' one more thing.  Not only shouldn't they teach mah kids a furn language, they shouldn't oughter teach them no eevolution er climate change er human seckshuality neither.  In fack, all they have to teach them is the ten commandments and creationalsim, 'n once they do that mah kids'll be able to compete in the global economy jess fahn ... all 14 of them."

"I'm John McCain, and I can't believe I approved this message."
Now I'm surprised at you, this is low even as satire.  You play right into the elitist view that many hold of Obama and his multi-degreed supporters.   The are a lot of people in the broad US that share a sense of a common culture who work hard for a living and really resent view points like yours.  This is why Clinton almost upset Obama in the end, her problem is that she started too late when her working class message would have played across the plains, now McCain just has to work on picking up more of her supporters like me.

Deuce, the financial rewards for doctors are much greater in specialties than in primary practice.  Should all doctors become specialists?

Many more growth opportunities exist in software and electrical engineering than chemical engineering.  Shall we stop teaching our kids chemical engineering?

Getting an MBA sure is a much better way to get rich than  a graduate degree in literature.  Let's close up all the liberal arts programs.

Sure, right now Mandarin is a very strategic language for our kids to learn.  It has about twice the number of speakers and trade with China is maybe 2 or 3 times trade with Latin America.  But if we stopped teaching Spanish to our kids, we'd be cutting ourselves off from a huge population that isn't our #1 trading partner (and won't be any time soon), but will be up in the top few for the foreseeable future.  Besides, Mandarin is HARD.  Not everyone can learn it.  Spanish is one of the easiest languages for a native English speaker to master ... better that than nothing.

Spanish isn't 100% useless, but when you look at business, finance and trade, if you had a choice between Spanish and Chinese, you'd be foolish to choose Spanish.

It seems you're looking at it from purely a geographical and/or US population perspective, not from a business, financial or economic perspective.  There is a reason large amounts of ADR was thrust to China after 1997 and American companies couldn't get into mainland China fast enough
tell me how many jobs you can find with the requirement that the person knows Chinese and how many requires that people speak Spanish.

I think that again, the issue is not Spanish or Chinese, the issue that has been discussed is whether our kids should be bilingual.
Hey, Brazil is not a Spanish-speaking country!  It is a Portugese-speaking country.  My father lived in Venezuela as a child, and I have friends from Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia... who would all tell you that there is a huge difference between Portugese and Spanish, both in language and culture... let alone the animosity between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America.
You are right, but my point is about LatinAmerica. If we are talking about spanish language , spain is the eigth economy of the world, with Mexico toghether would rank 6th.

Although it is not the point on discussion, I don't know any rivalty between Brazil and other LatinAmerican countries, my country and Brazil get along very well.  If you mention Argentina Brazil, well name any country that like Argentina.

If they want to specialize in something, yes.

    Now you're getting stupid.

And how many lessons of Mandarin did you take before dropping out?  You speak the most difficult language to master in the world but "Mandarin is too hard"...what?  Mandarin is hard to write.  THAT is difficult.  To learn to speak, not so much.  Cantonese is more difficult than Mandarin but Mandarin is spoken by the mainland/majority.  I've taken Spanish and the only time I used it was in high school and the lower end jobs before I got into the professional world.  Working in finance and import/export, my Chinese has come in more handy than any of the Spanish I've ever had.

This thread was lead by the comments by Obama regarding "you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish."

In the fields that I work in, employers were happy and impressed that I was learning Chinese and Japanese.  Very few, if any, even cared I took Spanish in high school or French in college even though it is on my resume.  Of the jobs I aimed for in my career progression and professions, NONE required Spanish or even mentioned it would be even "helpful" in ad or in interview.  But working in the areas of finance that I do, there is more of a focus on China and Japan than any Latin American company.  That is where the money is and that is where money is going.  Not to mention a couple companies I have worked for have offices in areas like Hong Kong, Bejing and Tokyo.

Slow?  Not really.  Beginning and end of my day are slowER with little breaks in between. The last post I made prior to this was begun at least two hours ago.  I'm at the end of my day and it's pretty slow for the last 45-minutes or so.  The import/export I deal with is part time after I go home.  A start up that is starting to pick up.

LOL days with a lot of Far East holidays I'm on here a LOT more than normal LOL it can be dead with Malaysia, Singapore, India, Thailand, China or Japan on holiday.
