McCain is a US citizen because his parents were US citizens.  Soil makes no difference whatsoever.  If you are born while your parents are on vacation in France, you don't have to apply for citizenship.  Duh.

So long as both parents are citizens.  Soil does matter, which is why the US Code mentions it specifically at least 4 times.

    Unnecessary "duh".

I've done it too, no sweat

"Methinks thou protest too much. " So....if you disagree with the President, you are accused of being racist. And....if you are upset at that accusation and argue that you in fact are not a racist, you "protest too much" , and are overly defensive.... because you are hiding the fact you are a racist...  The modern equivalent of the Salem Witch trials....

And if you don't agree with every last attack on President Obama, then you are conducting the Salem Witch Trials, eh BobinVa?  You've discovered diahhreal irony, I think.

Did we see anything like this movement in regard to McCain, a white man who actually was not born in the country?   --------------------- Yes we did, and had he won, we'd have seen much more. And I hate to break it to ya, but a Naval Base on US Soil is in the country.  In fact, a Naval Base not on US Soil is in the country.  Double moot

???  Where did this post come from?  A few posts later you atone for this one, but just so you know a US navy base in a foreign country is not US soil.

In Response to Re: who is sick of being called a racist for not walking in lock step : We saw plenty of attacks on McCain: His age The fact that he had skin cancer before The Keating 5..even though he was exonerated His divorce to his first wife How many houses he owns That he was just like George Bush - and thats just off the top of my head John McCain was born on a naval base because his father was serving his country. It happens a lot, they are called military brats. And you do realize that the "birther movement" is a pretty small group of whackos. Do the"truthers" represent the entire political left?

But why no birther movement against McCain??   Everyone left and right accepted him as an American, but right wing whack jobs have invented a conspiracy concerning Obama that in effect dismisses him as a (Black) African and illegitimate American.  Connect the dots.  It is not all about race, but it is foolish to think that race is not a major factor.

In Response to Re: who is sick of being called a racist for not walking in lock step : There were questions about McCain but McCain produced his original birth certificate early and that showed, while he was born within the borders of Panama, he was born on a naval base which is US soil. Therefore he is a US Citizen.

McCain's credentials for president hardly caused a ripple.  Obama's birth certificate was produced and the Birthers merely extended the scope of the conspiracy. It is not a coincidence.

What circumstances?  That Hawaii was a state?  Were some people thinking they were wicked smaht for stopping to think whether Hawaii was a state at the time Obama was born?  Thinking they might be on to something, meanwhile forgetting that something like half of all presidents were not born in a state.

Without making a blanket statement prone to hyperbole, it is undeniable that racsim is at the least the primary factor driving the birther movement.
