When listening to Republican arguments about defunding PBS, NPR and the endowment for the arts, it has nothing to do with money, which some conservatives may even admit is a tiny fraction of one percent of the federal budget.

The real issue is their fear that a well educated populace will not embrace their rigid, faith based stances. Well educated and aware people tend to question pre-emptive wars, our 'war on drugs' which imprisons many casual users to the enrichment of a profitable prison system, and the ability to freely choose when it comes to life changing decisions, like birth control and abortion.

PBS often and fearlessly discusses these topics, as does NPR, and both tend to show both sides of an issue. Bill Moyers features many guests who clearly advocate positions which are threatening to those on the right. Conservatives do not like any venue which they see as threatening to their agenda and their values.

Sesame Workshop's assets stood at 411 million at the end of last year.

The CEO is paid nearly 1 mil per year.

PBS is now home to numerous lucrative franchises with €Sesame Street the most successful, having earned $211 million in merchandising sales from 2003 to 2006.

empty chair'™s own Simpson-Bowles deficit-reduction commission calls for ending PBS subsidy” some $280 million outright.

Clearly do not need govt. financing, but read all the lefties here and come away believing the problem is that the rich don't pay enough, spending is never the problem even if we are running the government with deficit spending borrowing from china to stay afloat.

I don't really care if PBS gets federal funding or not, but doesn't the fact that Romney puts it on the table cast him as somebody who is not at all serious about addressing the federal debt or deficit?  He might as well have said he was going to cancel HBO in the white house.  He's so scared of specifics.

And Mittens own butt-buddy voted against killing Big Bird.

Apparently boy-Robin has had a change of heart after hearing how much chickefeed Big Bird consumes of the federal budget.

I don't know if you own cable, I do.

I have countless channels with very diverse programming.

There was a time when PBS needed federal money.

Those days are gone, there are enough channels to handle all of the programs currently offered by PBS, certainly Sesame Street could be self sustaining.

But this argument is just another indication where the problems lie in this county.

I'd be surprised if you ever gave a dime to PBS.

Just another issue for the left to demogogue.

And people wonder why the rich or anyone objects to paying more taxes.

23 million people looking for jobs and our president is talking about protecting big bird.

Might  sound good to his loyal left but it isn't going to move anyone else.

You have to dig pretty deep into the commission report to find a reference to PBS.  Romney said Obama should have run with Simpson-Bowles.  You know where the majority of the money comes from in Simpson Bowles?  Defense cuts, raising the payroll tax and retirement age, a gas tax, eliminating the mortgage interest deductions,  cutting farm subsidies and military pensions, cutting student loan subsidies.  Romney is running away from all substantial cost cutting in Simpson-Bowles, but he embraces it on the whole because it includes cuts to PBS?  This guy a is a joke - if you don't see he's willing to say ANYTHING, it's because you only hear what you want to.

Demagoguing?  Who brought it up as a zinger?

It did have the desired effect of flummoxing Mr. Lehrer, too.

    A twofer, at least.

But as to the title of this thread, they won't vote, but a lot of little and not so little campaign signs are running around, and 67 million know when they were unleashed.

But it was Romney who brought it up.  Asked to list loopholes he'd cut and govt programs he'd cut and the only thing he's come up with is Big Bird.

the only specific that Romney as given about anything has been Big Bird.

Would you rather he said he's completely wiping out medicaid and medicair instead of Big Bird?

Not for nothing but Big Bird can find a home wherever he wants to. I'm not worried about Sesame Street going under by any means. It will still be on the air no matter who winds up in the White House.

What you should be asking yourself if, if you want him to keep putting money into PBS (or any other program for that matter), what are you willing to give up to do so? What programs are willing to kill to make it happen, because that's what's going to happen.

We can't sustane the nation at this level of spending. We have to cut back, so what winds up on the chopping block? And don't think for one minute that everything you like is going to avoid that block.

Unwanted by who?... you? The military? Congress?

I would prefer to "invest" in the defense of our country than plss tens of billions away on the green energy tooth fairy to political pals as payoff which will only drive energy costs UP UP UP.

Because we have shown no backbone over the past 4 years abroad and al quada (despite presidential imagery) is on the rise, it makes sense being able to beef up our defenses.

There are so many domestic programs that are total waste. The fat in govt is there, we just need someone with a brain and balls to trim it.

Yup....lets build a few thousand more M-1 Abrahms tanks to sit unused, or maybe another $15 billion aircraft carrier to fight Al Quada.

The China loan test should be used against all expenditures. BTW Big Bird is a 1 percenter who will vote for Mitt; the bird reported makes $314K per year. Talk about feathering ones own nest off the backs of children.

Sesame Street Is the 1 Percent

    By Katrina Trinka

    THE CORNER

    NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE

    October 9, 2012 5:22 P.M.

President Obama, who has railed against the “fat-cat bankers on Wall Street” and the wealthy, has been an eager defender of Big Bird and public broadcasting this week in light of Mitt Romney’s comments that he would defund it in last week’s debate.

But it turns out that many of those behind Big Bird are actually members of the 1 percent themselves (anyone with a total income of $343,927 or more as of 2009), based on their salaries.

At Corporation for Public Broadcasting, according to the CPB’s 2011 tax forms:

Patricia De Stacy Harrison, president and CEO $361,895

At PBS, according to 2011 tax forms:

Paula Kerger, president and CEO $669,260
Michael Jones,  chief operating officer $477,296
Barbara Landes, chief financial officer, treasurer, and senior vice president $402,355
Katherine Lauderdale, senior vice president and general counsel,  $381,855.

At Sesame Workshop, according to 2011 tax forms:

Gary Knell, president and CEO of Sesame Workshop until October 2011, $988,456
    H. Melvin Ming, current president and CEO, $584,572
    Lewis Bernstein $406,387
    Terry Fitzpatrick $439,741
    Myung Kang-Huneke $389,005
    Sherrie Westin $463,892
    Susan Kolar $401,425
    Miranda Barry $397,175
    Maura Regan $379,733
    Joseph Mazzarino $556,165
    Caralynn Sandorf $354,476
    Anita Stewart $455,369

And while the actor who plays Big Bird (Carroll Spinney) doesn’t have a salary that puts him in the 1 percent, he’s not far off: Spinney makes $314,072.

And who’s funding this? Well, in part, taxpayers: the federal government gave the CPB a grant of $444.1 million in 2012.
