    Bigger or Smaller Government?

If there is anything we have learned this week, it is that big government is impractical.  A government so big that it singles out and targets those who argue for a smaller government is a practical lesson in what happens when we go beyond what is practical.

How on Earth will the same institution that illegally targetted these organization going to manage our health care?

This is not an issue of ideology, this is a matter of common sense.  A government big enough to give you everythuing you need is a government big enough to take it all away.  This past week proves it.

Wait....how come you're not asking for NO govt? I thought conservatives wanted NO govt. I mean...that's what many resident libs always claim.

skeeter I love it .. I hope there is an independent investigation and if it is found that a law was broken put the guilty party in jail and throw away the key but if it is found the Government (IRS) was doing its job and they were investigating groups who wanted an unfair tax exempt status I hope Congress will get rid of the real problem, Citizens United .

    "Small Government" means impotent government.

No, what it means is a government that abides by the Constitution. You know, that document that describes what the government can and can't do? Yeah, that thing.

Small government cannot violate the constitution?

smaller would be much easier to monitor and identify areas on concern.

Our govt is so bloated right now we have numerous scandals and NO ONE knows what happened, when it happened, who knew it happened or anything else really.

Some were over 3 years ago

What's the difference if neither works...?!

Let's try for better government first, then go from there....

(Notwithstanding the fallacies of the OP, there is a profound difference between government and governance.)

    Re: Bigger or Smaller Government?

False dichotomy.  The government will always be "big" simply because the country is big, its population large, and absent automated methods that would allow for downsizing and streamlining of certain functions the idea of "small" government doesn't acutally mean anything.

In reality what it means is "getting rid of stuff I don't like politically"  Like the EPA (who wants standards for environmental protections, its not like we drink WATER or breath AIR) or like the Dept of Education (If I want my child to learn science that teaches the Earth is 8000 years old and that dinosaurs were once mans pets then that is MY RIGHT).  This is evidenced by the fact that even when the GOP has controlled the executive no President has made any push to elimate these "big government" programs that republicans love to run on in election campaigns.

Can the government be more nimble and efficient and as a result smaller in size purely from a smaller workforce perspective?  Sure, but that is a systemic and labor issue, not this specious argument that boils down to "government can't do nuthin right so blow the whole thing up!"

A fallacy.  The size of the govt matters not to its ability to target anyone, high or low.

The government is not one institution; it is many institutions representing many, many divergent interests at all levels - local, county, state, federal.

But in your case here, it's just ideology, and this week "proved" nothing of the sort, though you wish it did.

    Try harder.

That might be hard for them to process. Fox has been saying "smaller government".

In conservative America, slogan speaks for you.

In liberal America is the slogan "blame Fox for everything"?

No. Ret@rds who deny science by pointing to an irrelevant and unrelated website's terms of service are the problem. You are the problem, basically.

Point taken. Andrew Jackson defied congress and the courts and illegally implemented genocidal policies against native americans during a time of very small government. On the other hand, the smaller the government the less damage is possible. So there's that.

Quite the opposite. There is an inverse relationship between the size of government and the amount of liberty any citizen has.

There is a conservative dream nation out there:

It has among the lowest tax burdens of any major country.  Fewer than 2% of the population pays any taxes.

Government is so limited, that burdensome regulations never kill jobs.

They embrace traditional religious values and a conservative sensibility....Nobody minds about school prayer.

Gay marriage isn’t imaginable, criminals are never coddled, and don't ask about abortion rights.

The budget priority is a strong military, which is the nation’s most respected institution.

So where is this Republican Utopia?

    Why, it’s Pakistan

    Not necessarily.

Liberty has a way of not sustaining itself without support and protection.  Without the appropriate level of certainty to ensure "Liberty For All", we would devolve into a free-for-all.  Tribalism will run rampant, and liberties will be threatened.

Of course, we can discuss what that "appropriate level" means, but that's another question entirely.

Even tribal societies understand that if everyone doesn't work together and share responsibilities, the tribe cannot survive.  Hence the need for rules, justice and, yes, even restrictions on liberty.

We know this implicitly, which is why we decided entrust some critical areas to government with the caveat that we - the people - also get to run for public office and make sure the public's best interests are met.
