No fence will keep a determined immigrant out.  They go over it and under it.  And apparantly they go thru it with acetylene torches and snippers too.  There have been thousands of fence breaches that have needed repair already.

Not True.  the double fence in California has moved much of the border crossing further East towards Arizona.

But, I can see why you didn't excel in school.  Why do the right thing when the wrong thing is so much easier?

This article is 4 years old, and the number of breaches in the fence needing repair was over 3300 back then.  Imagine how many its up to now.

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2009/0919/p02s09-usgn.html

There are also several videos online showing people using car-jacks to lift the fence so people and drugs can go under.

So, you find a fence that stops hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants a failure because a few thousand get through?

sounds like you are re-cycling you voter fraud argument.

This article state the fence works.  Interviews the border patrol and everything.

To try the fence when other means are for more efficient and largely untried is worse.

    Dodge.

other means, I.e. the electric fence don't work.  Focusing on companies hiring practices should be done, but it is kinda like saying bank robbery is ok, we will simply confiscate the money when it is spent.

If only Obama  was as concerned about Mericans as he was about what type of wood Gibson guitars uses.

    A fence really, a wall?

How stupid is the American public and the republican party to rally behind this wall idea while they claim money is beng wasted on other programs. A fence is the single most ridiculus thought ever. But wait, now you need to employ some clowns to manage and defend it.

What, we've forgotten about the chinese with their great wall, maybe the Berlin wall, maybe the bamboo wall? Did we forget what happened with that and their messiah raygun.

*hint* "Take down that wall". Yikes. Probably rolling over in his grave right now.

Amazing to me the singular ultimate stupidity of any physical wall idea and those who promote it.

I feel bad for Obama having to stroke morons just to calm down the opposition.

George, may you rest in peace, we miss you. Even if you had ONLY given us the 7 words you cannot say...that would have been a legacy.

Watching the film "Jersey Girl" the other night, I was again reminded that first, he was no longer here, but two, he left behind soooo much he really still is here and always will be.

The Berlin Wall was put up in 1961 when the World War 2 had ended for 16 years. It was built by the successor of Stalin. This happened because when East Germany surrounded West Berlin, people migrated there for better life. This caused a big blow on their economy and propaganda. Hence the Berlin Wall was built to stop East Germans from entering West Berlin. Those who tried were shot.

the Berlin wall was torn down in 1989

    Border deal reached?

According to a high ranking Senate aide, a formal announcement is expected Thursday morning.

A second capitol hill source tells ABC News the agreement will include a major border build up, with a huge increase in border personnel and an increase in fencing. Attaching the amendment could bring the larger piece of legislation closer to the goal of 70 votes
Dodge.

It only looks like a dodge if you don't read through the thread. I already indicated what I think would work at a far lower cost.

Building a fence is hardly a complete solution, and what of the illegals already here? Take a look at the yearly cost of incarceration and the average length of deportation proceedings.

Then multiply by the 7 - 12 million illegals estimated to be here.

You'll get a pretty high number even if you don't start adding up the costs of:

    - Building facilities to house them (our jails are bursting and have a fraction of the number of inmates as there are illegals in the country)

    - Hiring guards for the facilities, agents to catch them, prosecutors to prosecute them, drivers to drive them to the border.

    - All the new busses, etc, required to handle it.

You're talking a multi-trillion dollar daydream on the contain & deport front.....
Dumb argument. Even if we decided to deport them all, 7-12 million would not be deported at once so you are making a wild exaggeration of the cost. Plus once we started deporting in a serious manner a huge number would leave on their own.

Secondly, border security is a fundamental responsibility of the government. Half the other nonsense they spend money on is not. The federal government has been purposely neglectful of this responsibility. To throw up numbers with the implication that it cannot be done is irrelevant. They are barely even trying.

Remove the incentives for them to come here, so they self deport:

    1. No benefits for those here illegally

    2. Jail for employers who hire illegals

    3. Deport illegals when detected in the course of law enforcement

    4. Decriminalize drug use

    5. No federal money for any city or juristiction that declares itself a "sanctuary city" or refuses to cooperate with federal authorities to enforce immigration laws.

You are making a false argument. You really do not want the border and immigration laws to be enforced. Why not?

    Re: Border Fence

Not already against the law to hire"illegals", but since soooo many are soooo worked up about the IRS, let us not forget the fact it is also against the law to pay employees of any kind under the table. To say lots of people and businesses do it does not justify it one bit.

Forget moral values, forget integrity...it is against the law. Some of those people and businesses will only hire those who accept being paid under the table.  They force those people to forgo a job opportunity or break the law...against their will.

Of course it is also against the law to not pay the minimum wage. Not a living wage...but the legal minimum wage.

It is hardly just a black and white issue...no pun or slur implied. The employers who "hire" people here illegally, commit more than one crime themselves.

And the argument that they cannot afford to pay the prevailing wage, and follow the rules is a strawman's argument.

Just a way to deflect they are trying to justify a means to an end. The end being lowering their overhead which in turn ups their bottom line,  regardless of how many laws they themselves are breaking themselves.

Who's arguing in favor of those who hire illegals? I don't think anyone is defending these people. Simple solution...don't hire illegals and they'll eventually leave. In order to do this we need to crack down harder on businesses that hire illegals. It's ILLEGAL to hire illegal immigrants....so let's start enforcing this.
