Climate Science Exploited for Political Agenda

According to Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.

Climatism or global warming alarmism is the most prominent recent example of science being coopted to serve a political agenda, writes Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. He compares it to past examples: Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, and the eugenics movement.

Lindzen describes the Iron Triangle and the Iron Rice Bowl, in which ambiguous statements by scientists are translated into alarmist statements by media and advocacy groups, influencing politicians to feed more money to the acquiescent scientists.

In consequence, he writes, "A profound dumbing down of the discussion…interacts with the ascendancy of incompetents." Prizes and accolades are awarded for politically correct statements, even if they defy logic. "Unfortunately, this also often induces better scientists to join the pack in order to preserve their status," Lindzen adds.

In normal science, models are judged by how well they agree with nature, Lindzen explains. In the climate "debate," however, the models are given a claim to validity independent of agreement with real observations.

    Acquiescent scientists. That's hilarious.

    In response to A_Concerned_Citizen's comment:

    Good article.

His view that the politicizing of science and alarmism is counter productive is a valid one.

That being said, he is not a climate denier but agrees with climate science, greenhouse gasses and a warming planet from human activity.

What he disagrees with is how that can mitigated.

His theory is that global warming is real and man contributes to it but that the natural effects of that warming, specifically less cloud developement in the tropics, will allow more heat to escape into space.

    ---------------------------------------------------

"Dr. Lindzen accepts the elementary tenets of climate science. He agrees that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, calling people who dispute that point "nutty." He agrees that the level of it is rising because of human activity and that this should warm the climate." However, he believes that decreasing tropical cirrus clouds in a warmer world will allow more longwave radiation to escape the atmosphere, counteracting the warming.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Sounds plausible, except that in 2009 he had to admit to some "stupid mistakes" with his own satellite data.

    -----------------------------------------------------

Dr. Lindzen acknowledged that the 2009 paper contained "some stupid mistakes" in his handling of the satellite data. "It was just embarrassing," he said in the Times interview. "The technical details of satellite measurements are really sort of grotesque."

    -----------------------------------------------------

He concluded the interview with a rather nonchalant view of global warming.

In the same interview, Dr. Lindzen said, "You have politicians who are being told if they question this, they are anti-science. We are trying to tell them, no, questioning is never anti-science." He further explained: "If I’m right, we’ll have saved money. If I’m wrong, we’ll know it in 50 years and can do something."

Remember over 20 years ago they told use the ice caps would be gone in 30 years.

    How them caps doing?

Wow, a scientist who admits to being human and fallible. He clearly doesnt fit in with

the self- aggrandizing,  egotistical,  federal grant-sucking "Infallible Global Climate Change Scientists, Who Will Save Civilization from Evil Carbon and Cannot be Questioned"
