All Republicans Want in Exchange for Not Destroying the Economy Is Everything

Republicans gave The National Review a draft of their starting point for negotiations with President Obama on the debt ceiling. It's jaw-dropping.

A quick reminder: the debt ceiling is the amount the government is allowed to borrow in order to pay bills accrued by Congress. Here is what the Republicans offer:

    • Suspend the debt limit until December 2014.
    • Delay Obamacare for a year.
    • Include tax reform measures along the lines of the Rep. Paul Ryan principles.
    • Agree to a slew of environmental issues: Approve the Keystone pipeline, kill EPA clean air and climate regulations, increase drilling.
    • Approve "regulatory reforms" including the REINS Act, which would basically gut the executive authority to make any regulations.
    • Implement spending cuts, including reforming retirement programs, the child tax credit ("to prevent fraud"), and, of course, ending Dodd-Frank.
    • Reforming health spending, including tort reform.

This is literally every policy priority of the Republican Party. This is hostage-taking, not politics. "We have been unable to pass our core priorities because voters keep electing Democrats to the Senate and the White House so we are asking that in order to prevent the economic catastrophe of a debt ceiling default, you sign off on doing everything we have ever wanted, is that OK with you, yes / no?"

Obama will negotiate with anyone, didnt he say that?  Assad who mass murders with chemical weapons..North Korea and Iran building nukes..Al Qaeada...

The policy of the US is not to negotiate with terrorists that hold Americans hostage.

Ronnie Raygun did it with Iran and it hurt US credibility immensely.

Why are GOP positions hostage taking when they are negotiation points.  How would you characterize the democratic process that beget us the Affordable I don't Care Act i the first place a coup de tat?

You're either naive or being extremely disengenous to pretend that what they want is to 'negotiate' with Obam on any of those topics.

Like last time, they want to hold the debt limit hostage and demand terms. The last time, they won us a debt limit downgrade (which their loyal sycophants blamed Obama for, just as programmed) and a sequestration nobody liked.

What do you expect them to accomplish this time?

Authorizing spending and then refusing payment unless the other party meets demands is NOT a way to govern. It is dangerous and childish.

Anyone who supports it is part of what is destroying this country.

    [/QUOTE]

Yes disengenuous to a certain degree, I noticed that neither you nor ACC had a response to the Coup.

The debt limit downgrade was because the US Government spent too damn much, and has insane deficits. Not because the debt limit was negotiated.

The sequester was a great success..Obama was forced to do it, but it benefitted him politically. Even the despicable tactics of Obama in deliberately hurting the public to make them feel the pain, didnt work. Agencies could absorb a 5% trim with little problem. No more hype about millions starving in the streets...

Well, now that Putin is the wingnuts new BFF, it might be worth a try.

What is the point that the wingnuts are 'negotiating'?

To pay the bills that they, themselves wrote with every appropriation bill they put their signature on.

They want to extort concessions from PotUS and the Dems to enact their wish list of policies because they are incapable of winning general elections and passing their agenda through the normal legislative process... else they will crash the economy.

They have already authorized the country to rack up this debt but when the bill comes due they refuse to allow the gov't to pay it, thus reneging on their promissary notes. They are 'negotiating' their own prior bad acts of legislation.

And this isn't some kind of sudden, extraordinary scenario. This has become the default position of the wingnuts: "Either do what we, the minority, want or we'll destroy the economy for everyone." That is extortion, hostage taking, nihilism ...use whatever term you'd like but it is't governing and it certainly isn't the way our system of gov't is designed to work.

And if you don't understand the difference between that process, and a party passing their agenda through the normal legislative process due to their majority in both chambers of Congress achieved by lawful and fair elections, then I can't help you.

What a crock - as usual from you. Putin saved Obama's a55.

Obama is a community activist amateur. He has no clue what he is doing. He wants to play tough guy to prove his manhood and backs down with a whimper. Our adversaries are going to challenge this lightweight again for sure.

And lest you ignore - most of the sheet that has us bankrupt are the ponzi scheme social programs that Democrats refuse to cut. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Obammycare. The debt ceiling is not the time to deal with this, but most of the current and projected government debt is due to unaffordable social programs.

You are a liar, so please, just shut the hell up. You know perfectly well that the downgrade was because the GOP/TP actions created doubt that America would actually pay its bills and was capable of resolving budgetary issues.

It disturbs me with how little some so called physicaly responsible republicans understand about the way credit works. We were down graded because they were afraid we weren't going to pay our bills.
