Don't waste your time debating a staunch conservative!

    July 13, 2010

"New research suggests that misinformed people rarely change their minds when presented with the facts -- and often become even more attached to their beliefs. The finding raises questions about a key principle of a strong democracy: that a well-informed electorate is best."
I have tried to debate a number of these types and even after presented with hard facts, they stick to the line presented by Faux News.

The key word is "rarely".  I remain an optomist.  I was a conservative once and I got better.

Let me guess...new research paid for by stimulus money! 25 jobs were "created or saved" by this research grant...
It was on NPR...National Moonbat Radio, so it must be true....

Agreed: the fact of 10% unemployment and private sector economy meltdown doesnt change the moonbat mind....maybe because most (like NPR) have their snouts in the public trough...

I was a silly idealistic liberal once upon a time in college before I had to earn a living.  I supported and voted for Jimmy Carter one of the biggest disappointments of my life.  I entered the working world in the late seventies as the economy was wracked by inflation; when getting a 10% raise still had you 3 points behind inflation.  In my transition from being a college kid liberal I gravitated to newly independent John Anderson in 1980 and have been uninrolled ever since.  I later voted for Reagan and have vacilated Dem/GOP ever since then.

What I've found is that the hard core extremes on both sides refuse to ackowledge facts not meeting their own paradigm.  The extreme 10% on both sides of the aisle drive the wedge issues and in this cycle the pendulum is going to take a hard shift to the right to counteract the hard shift to the left that has been built over the years.  The real promise is that Mass is going to show its purple colors for the first time in a long time.  Purple is good.

Would that what we are seeing and hearing now are truly "liberals" and "conservatives"...

...the terms have nearly lost all meaning but for the infinite attempts to slander one another with pejoratives.  The two ideologies are now more closely associated with things and attitudes and emotions than with ideas or philosophies - anti-intellectualism in a nutshell.

Philosophical reasoning always implies that there is ample common ground on which opposing viewpoints can meet (if we're so willing).  But today's political movements are more defined by what separates us than what binds us.

    Agree?  Disagree?  Comprende?

I fully admit to being guilty of it, too on occasion, but it's mostly when other salient points have been ignored to the degree of obstinacy.

Emotions are the enemy of reasoned discourse.

Faux News. That's very clever. It's like it's not really a news network right? Should I switch to a real news network like PMSNBC? Where I can watch hosts like Olbermann and Maddow cheerlead for the current administration?

MSNBC anchor admitted that Obama's speech created a "thrill" in his leg: "It's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often."

Now that's some fair and balanced reporting.

I'm seeing a lot of "I was a liberal once, but things were bad so I gave up caring".  That's akin to saying "I went to school for a while, but there was stuff I didn't yet know, so I quit".  That shows a weakness of mental ability.  Seeing causation where there is none is common, but still pathetic.  Further fuel to the fire of why reactionaries are thought of as mental defectives.

On the contrary.  It was the impact of the vile nonsense spouted by social conservatives and the rank idiocy of George W. Bush.  I have never ridden a motorcycle.
