In Response to Re: GOP clarifies its view on rape/abortion : Oh, do we have to do this? Ya, I've been in the technology business for probably longer then you were/are so you should know that every six months it changes. You said such a dumb thing about tech being slow to change which can, even to the uninitiated, know that's not true. Phones for instance. Ever hear of smart phones/Flat panel TVs/Fiber Optics/Home management/iPad apps for contolling all this stuff/etc Geesh, even installing simple fios panels should let you know. Stupid stupid. I am appalled Posted by BilltheKat -------------------------------------- Hey Bill, Yea, I'm old enough. I remember E.F. Codd, and I called him "Ted".  I got drunk with Jim Martin and his charming wife, Carma McClure (she was less than enthused than he), and I beat the pus out of Vaughn Merlyn on metadata, and still drink with Ed Yourdon, albeit gingerale for moi. Ed "Mr Dataflow" Yourdon and I disagree on just about everything.  But we still have a blast beating each other up.  I'm data - he is process.  HE says, the code makes the world go round.  I say the data makes the world go round, and if the data is sht, you can code your a55 off and still get sht. How bout you.  I respect both sides of the argument, BTW? Hisotry:  I got a plaque, dated September 19, 1989 - the birth of IBM's disasterous AD/Cycle.   Killed 4 companies.  One of them mine.  It was called Intersolv - formerly Index Technology - 1 Main St, Cambridge Remember, "No one ever got fired for hiring Big Blue?" True, we were simply destroyed

Ya, so what are you saying? You drank too much? Argued over compression algorithms?

We're arguing about technology. He says it hasn't changed, I say it has. Where's the losing argument? You don't have to be a techie to know this argument is lost..

BTW, glad you got sober. Good for you.

    A short time.

I worked out of Miami Lakes for Nortel CALA (Carribean-Latin America) in the 90s.

What pushed me back up north was a transfer to El Salvador.

The rebels would spend the day in Honduras at night slip back over the border and wreak havoc, blow up stuff, kill people.

On one of these excursions they blew up the local phone office in one of the towns knocking phone service out for the region.

Nortel had containerized phone systems in what amounts to a climate controlled windowless house trailer. A Nortel DMS-10 phone system capable of 10K lines and a mainframe inside.

They had plans to lower one into the village by helicopter and have me go down to the village to install, test and turn it up.

    I didn't like the odds.

This was shortly after the two nuns were found murdered.

At the time I was working in St Marten upgrading the island phone system, I spent the day after they told me in the casinos drinking and gambling and flew home to NY the next day hung over.

I went back to work for them in about a week working out of NY.

I liked Miami though, a great town, great restaurants lots of beautiful women.

Pretty light resume to someone who claimed to have more experience than I.

I worked a lot in Ma. as a consultant for Nortel assisting/advising Verizon installation crews the last I worked there.

Got off the road 5 years ago, was quite an experience, I've been everywhere, the road killed Elvis.

I'm still in demand for my expertise, I collect 2 pensions and still work.

I was union for a short time, I had to when I worked in NYC.

Didn't like it, the union crimped my style, I made more money on the non union side of the company where I was paid and rewarded for my efforts and my abilities.

Delivery has not changed, the bandwidth has increased immensely, (had to) all the recent changes to the industry more in the handheld devices and the servers.

Bundled services are going to make a lot of money for the phone companies.

    sure.

You're whole story is full of holes and actually kinda bores me. You're a phone guy towing the line. What do you know about technology. You plugged wires!

Glad you're out of the business. Enjoy your pensions, go on a cruise. Enjoy retirement.

Back to the issues, green tech is the new tech. Time to move on.

    You're a cluck hiding behind a curtain.

My past is full of holes? How many risks have you taken?

You don't know much about technology less about where the country is headed.

green tech seems to be the tech of bankruptcy.

Reality will set in in Nov.

One last response, delivery has changed as you finally admit. Thanks to  switching to to digi the bandwidth can now handle the load put to it via smart end user objects. Bundled services will make much money as the load now doesn't increase as much as it used to, but yet the bundled prices don't go down.

    I could tell.

I thought he might be a cell phone sales assistant.

He slightly knows the difference between analogue and digital.

The way the signal is delivered from the telecom network to the cell base station then radioed to his hand held device hasn't changed in 20 years.

Why it wasn't available on the scale that it is today is because of the bandwidth it requires operate, it just wasn't available.

Video requires hugh amounts of bandwidth and it simply wasn't available until the telecom companies upgraded their hardware.

Why AT&T had so many problems in large metro areas when the I-Phone was first released, they didn't have the network bandwidth to support it to a large amount of users.

Like having a Ferrari in Aftghanistan, great vehicle but no roads to use it.

A lot of my former co-workers are now working with T-Mobile and Verizon working with the technology he's talking about, I had an opportunity to go over to specialize in that field but chose not to because it involved international travel and at the time I had just spent 17 straight years on the road and was ready to get off.

    bill is fos.
