    GOP = Grand Old Plutocrats

They choose to tank the economy rather than let the top 2% pay more taxes.  That is really their only objection; the one principle they deem so important as to fight to the death (or at least the next primary).

The stereotype of 'party of plutocrats' is now a sad truism, since we know they care next to nothing for those dirty masses of "47 percenters" who just wanted "gifts".  (Presumably, the rest want insecure jobs with no health insurance.)

"Hysteria" would be a perfect word...if it wasn't an insult to actual, honest hysterics.

We also can't say that they don't give a s**t.  They absolutely do.  They care very, very deeply that POTUS is an illegitimate president, a foreigner with no mandate and clearly no respect for the time-honored, American, tradition of electing old, white men to the presidency.

They favor war with Iran and apartheid (or worse) in Israel.

They want to re-start the Cold War with Russia and start a new one with China.

They want all of the power to govern without any of the responsibility to govern.

For them, torture is totally cool, but gay marriage is not; global warming is just fine with them, but environmentalism is a commie plot to take over monsanto.

As one senator said, The GOP has still not fully accepted the 2008 results, let alone the 2012 results.  So, why should we wonder when their version of reality does not comport with that of the rest of us...?

Granted, the GOP is still kinda in tact, which is remarkable considering how low they've dropped over the past few years.  It's just too bad the new leaders can't measure up to the older ones.

The party of No, Know Nothing and Do Nothing has really accomplished nothing for America since Nixon created the EPA in 1970, something that current party members would equate with treason, socialism and pure evil.

Whatever good conservative or libertarian ideas exist out there probably tend to dovetail with the the social, economic and and cultural justice that personify the good ideas of the Democratic Party.

Sure, one-party rule is not ideal and is not a long-term solution, but when the other party is nothing more than a group of crazy carnival barkers repeating the thoughtless shibboleths of 'freedom','faith', 'family' and 'liberty', then maybe one-party rule isn't so bad, especially if they deal in facts and solutions instead of dead symbolism.

Face it, the conservative movement took a long time to impale itself on the shards of its own duplicity, but never has a political suicide been so well-earned and well deserved.

Hysteria is a perfect word for Matty's post. Happy New Year! Expect more endless excuse making in 2013 for the  Obama policies which are tanking the economy, massively  increasing the deficit ,  and growing the culture of dependency.

The useless class warfare about taxes on the rich will result in tax rates increasing, with little additional revenue. Even using the cooked Obama numbers, it would impact the massive deficit by... 3%. But low information voters like to hear about getting rich people's money.

According to the moonbat mantra, Republicans/conservatives  are irrelevant: a Southern-based small and shrinking group of racist old white men, with wild extreme views that few agree with, and all of whom all hate the President solely because he is black....and who have lost the popular vote in 5 of 6 presidential elections..

Yet somehow, even though the Democrats have had all their tax-and-spend and top-down government redistributionist policies full implemented, with control of the Senate since 2006 and the White House since 2008, the Republicans are somehow still responsible for all things bad.

Man up and own up to Obama's massive failures...though he never does and never will.

The GOP have proven themselves useless, but, you can't be serious in blaming them for tanking the economy.  Obama continues on his scorched earth policies which are destroying our economy, and you have the stones to blame the hapless republicans?

Obama has gotten everything he wanted. Even Bohner caved.  But no.  Obama negotiates with no one.  IT is his way, or the highway.

Face it, you are trying to blame the republicans, as bad as they are, for Obama's decided approach to NOT negotiate.

Matty won't do that.  In his world, being pro freedom and supporting the consittution is a reactionary concept.

As a monograph of the republican party (the conservative movement?) based on its stated positions at the end of 2012, there is focus in the first two posts.  If the rest are trying to correct the portrait, they just look like chickens running around with their heads cut off.  Just reread this thread.

Matty, I agree with most of your post, the current GOP leadership is out of touch, and it seems like  some in the party would sooner let the country fall off a cliff, rather than admit the mistake......

However, I'm curious as to why do you keep harping on this Aparthied argument in Israel. Unlike what took place in South Africa, Israeli Arabs have the same rights as Israeli citizens, and the Palestinians people have their own government in Gaza which dictate their laws. Israel has nothing to do with that.    What is taking place inside Israel a direct result of the Hamas Government's continued support of state sponsored terrorism and the shelling of Israeli citizens. WDYWN is correct, the U.S. would be a lot tougher were it to occur on our border.

It's true that many in the region are suffering extreme hardships, primarily due to blockades etc, and a humanitarian case can be made against Israel on that front.  But, a lot of arms come through the ports, and I don't see any of the other Arab countries taking the Palestinan people in, or rushing to their aid, even after the UN vote.

like to hear your thinking on this issue.

I feel that the republicans have wanted to go over the cliff from day one. Remember that the bill to do this passed with republican support. Its a republican bill. The republicans really want the draconian cuts. They probably plan on voting to end the tax increases AFTER going over the cliff. They also probably will want to keep the deep cuts in Social Security and Medicare (throwing senior citizens under the bus), while stopping the defense cuts. In other words, they want us to be just like their commie heroes in North Korea where everyone is starving except for the Army.
