Investigation continues; CIA reported evidence that it was a terrorist attack in Libya attack within 24 hours after attack.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about an American-made video ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, U.S. officials have told The Associated Press.

Congressional aides say they expect to get the documents by the end of this week to build a timeline of what the intelligence community knew and compare that to what the White House was telling the public about the attack.

And Obama called it an Act of terror the next day and the day after.

Re: Investigation continues; CIA reported evidence that it was a terrorist attack in Libya attack within 24 hours after attack.

From what I have read the CIA briefing points noted that "There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations" but did not mention eyewitness accounts that blamed militants alone.  So despite acknowledgement, to some extent, that extremists may have been present, the information did not say for certain that was the case.

In the intelligence community raw data such as what would have been sent across 24 hours following the attack, is typically sent to Langley for analysts to further dive into and combine with additional information the Agency may have such as surveillance video, satelitte imagery, any chatter from known or suspected militants  in and around the time of the attack, and other data points that could include HUMINT such as eyewitness accounts (local police, witness, people detained in the area) and debriefs of the US staff onsite.  This all takes time and resources and is a process that is followed methodically because it allows authorities to vet information and determine its truthiness, if you will.  For this reason raw intelligence is rarely presented to civilian leadership because the conclusions they may draw and subsequently act on could be catastrophic.

In other words, we should assume that the CIA sent information across in the aftermath to Washington.  Thats their job.  But there was no way for them to make a credible and accurate assessment of what exactly happened that close to the event they were investigating, especially when the days preceeding saw numerous protests across the region at other US facilities.

Mentioning our countries resolve against terrorism and claiming the attack is a "terrorist attack" is not the same thing!

IF, he would have followed up in the days afterwards by calling it a terrorist attack them maybe you could make the correlation but, he did not and in fact contradicted people that said it was a terrorist attack!!

People are not that stupid. You probably aren't either and just wish it to be true.

It has always been a tight race but, this cover up (and let's call it what it is here) is huge and will be a major factor that will cost him the election. If each side had a mulligan, this would be the Presidents do over. IMO.

If he called it what it was from the get go instead of claiming otherwise for two weeks, this would have been water under the bridge for him. Now it's going to follow him all the way up to the day of the election and become part of his legacy.

And for those replying he did call it what it was the next day, don't foget to read the part where they did a cover up tour two weeks following.

    What was covered up?

The Consulate in Benghazi was attacked in an act of terror.  3 Americans were killed.  This was reported within 24 hours.

What was not clear was whether the attack was from a group of protestors that turned violent (no), linked to the Video (maybe), preplanned (unknown), by insurgents linked to al-Qaida (very loose connection).

There was a request for more security at the Consulate, which would not have stopped the attack and for troops at the embassy in Tripoli, which would not have stopped the attack in Benghazi.

Initially, there were conflicting reports and the CIA is still not certain what happen.

Its not a cover up. The attackhappened, and the government is investigating to determine those who are responsible.  What this discussion is trying to parse semantics to assign blame for not referring to the event as being terrorism SOON ENOUGH.  Nothing has been covered up, the facts of the matter are out there.  The political issue being fought is simply did the president call it terrorism as soon as it was evident that was terrorism.

Then why did the administration INSIST it was about a video even after the Libyan President said that was preposturous and that it was a planned attack??? Why did they not read intelligence from the CIA in country after an attack? That should be a priority right?

I mean a priority IF they really wanted the truth or facts!!

Should the President see all the intelligence before it has been vetted?

It's still not clear if the attack was preplanned or if the Video was the impetuous for the attack.

I get the feeling if this had been a Republican in office, you would not need the explanation that this was and still is a cover up. I understand, it's not looking good and hard to defend. If you can't see it, well nothing I'm going to write will be a revelation for you.

I get the felling that if a republican was in office he would have cut and ran from Libya by now instead of staying and showing strength to the enemy !

For the conservatives - what would you say if you found out Benghazi was linked to the youtube video?  I'm not saying Benghazi stemmed from a demonstration, but what if Al Quaeda or other terrorist groups were showing this video to people and presenting it as stemming from the US government?  We know there were protests at embassies across the middle east - doesn't it seem strange that so many would stumble across a single youtube video promoted by an obscure Florida pastor?

Would this change your mind in any way about the administrations handling of the situation?

So basically there is no cover up and you can't man up and admit you were wrong.

The President should absolutely know about intelligence sent from the CIA Chief in the region; not some clerk THE CIA CHIEF and he should give it due credit!
