If the soon to be extinct GOP  can't win an election they want to put their thumbs on the scales and devalve the vote of the Democrats.

By making the rules the same for everyone?

I think the rules for voting is the same for all Americans but the the rules in the countingof  a person's vote isn't the same for everyone .

    Backwards.  You got it backwards.

    Hence, the legislation in question.

States make the rules about how voting goes down.  In the case of 9 states, apparently, the Feds have oversight.

All votes count the same, i.e. one per voter.

What is up for discussion is whether the conditions that caused the federal oversight are still in plal.

That Scalia is questioning this is what has the left screaming racist.

The Voting Rights Act that Martin Luther King fought for, which protects everyone's right to vote, is a "racial entitlement" now?

Let's just be honest about what Antonin Scalia is - click LIKE if you agree.

What a piece of dirt you are, calling Scalia a racist without a shred of evidence.

Yup racism is rampant in the US.... only AFTER Obama takes office..

Seems to me Obama is the fear mongering racist.

Racism ramped up after Obama's election precisely because a Black man was in the White House.

Prejudiced people see it the opposite way.

    Really?

A marxist gets elected, and everyone screams racism.

OK, I cracked the code.  If you even question whether somothing is racist (or not), you are racist saccording tothe august minds on the left.

That's why a black man was elected to the office in the land. Twice. We are SOOOOO racist.

There are far too many racists out there still.  But we are much better than before.

Obama a Marxist?  You don't know political philosophy in theory or practice at all.   Don't talk stupid.  And of course you downplay racism (birtherism, etc.) it gets in the way of your political hatred for the guy.

    In response to ComingLiberalCrackup's comment:

"Anyone who would catergorize voting as a "racial entitlement" is more than dishonorable"

Anyone who would lie about a Supreme Court Justice's remarks is dishonorable. Or is blinded by liberal ideology. Like Rachel Maddow, a despicable loudmouth.

Scalia was obviously referring not to voting, but to the Voting Rights Act, Section 5.

The Constitution says the federal government must treat all states equally under the law. This is called the "equal footing" doctrine, and exceptions require extraordinary circumstances to pass legal muster. Such circumstances certainly prevailed in 1965 when Congress passed the Voting Rights Act to overturn local and state laws that denied blacks their right to vote. The Voting Right  Act was a necessary 'racial entitlement'.

What Scalia was saying is that a 'racial entitlement' like the Voting Rights Act was unlikely to be reversed by legislation, because of the 'race card'. The very reaction to his statement proves how right he was...the demagogues of the Left cant discuss any such issue without smearing an opposing view...

The Supreme Court therefore has to decide if there is evidence TODAY justifying some states to be treated differently by the federal government. Not evidence 40 years ago.

If the Voting Rights Act is so benevolent and wonderful to have the federal government for  40 years continuously overseeing all aspects of local voting districts and overseeing local elections, then Massachusetts should be part of it as well..

HEAR HEAR!! Anyone that thinks he was making a disparaging remarks is just too ignorant to hold a conversation with a SCOTUS judge!

skeeter are you saying the only way to find out if racism exist in the Good Old U.S. of A. is to ask tough questions .......... i.e. "Mr Romney because your father was born in Mexico can we see birth certificate ?" I would like to know why  that question was never asked of Mr 47% but it was constantly thrown in the face of Obama ? Is it because Obama doesn't look like one of us but one of ........ ?

BTW explain your question Mr Wizard ....  are you saying that you are a racist ?

The question is, does racism exist in respect to voting inthese areas.  If it does, people ought to be frogg-marched to jail.

But, insterad, you make it an emotional issue, as if everyone doesn't want honest voting, every legitimate voter getting to vote once per election, not denied for any reason, not allowedto vote multiple times, like some Obama voters.

If the soon to be extinct GOP  can't win an election they want to put their thumbs on the scales and devalve the vote of the Democrats.

Yes, in Ohio the vote of a Democrat was so valued,  the Democrat voted six times on the same day. Better not put the thumb on that, it would be considered racist, no doubt...
