JOBLESS CLAIMS AT LOWEST LEVEL IN 7 YEARS!!!

Ready for some good economic news? Jobless claims are at their lowest level in SEVEN YEARS.

This is addition to Tuesday, when the Labor Department reported that the job openings in February rose 7.7% from January. The rate of private-sector job openings reached its highest level since the recovery started in mid-2009. Hires also rose 1.6% from January.

Of course this is a debate forum, so ready to see the downside of these numbers.

Jobless claims at lowest level in 7 years
    Roger Yu, USA TODAY

The U.S. job market is showing some spring in its step as first-time jobless claims fall to their lowest level in seven years.

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dropped to a seasonally adjusted 300,000 last week, down 32,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. The last time the number dipped below 300,000 was in May 2007.

The previous week's level was revised up by 6,000 from 326,000 to 332,000.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had estimated a new claims total of between 310,000 to 330,000.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile indication of the claims, fell 4,750 to 316,250. That's the lowest since late September.

The Labor Department said, "There were no special factors impacting this week's initial claims." But fewer layoffs and the improving weather that triggers new economic activities helped push down unemployment claims.

"The winter claims boost from adverse weather has now been reversed with gusto," said Michael Englund, chief economist of Action Economics.

Economists caution that seasonally adjusted jobless claims numbers can be volatile this time of year due to changing dates for Easter and school spring breaks. Easter was on March 31 last year and comes on April 20 this year.

On a not-seasonally adjusted basis, initial claims for jobless benefits have risen two weeks in a row. This year's early-April plunge in seasonally adjusted numbers could be skewed by Easter arriving later, Englund said.

The jobless claims report is the latest to show improving trends in the U.S. labor market.

On Tuesday, the Labor Department reported that the job openings in February rose 7.7% from January. The rate of private-sector job openings reached its highest level since the recovery started in mid-2009. Hires also rose 1.6% from January.

Last week, the government reported the economy gained 192,000 jobs in March while January and February job gains were 37,000 higher than previously estimated. The unemployment rate held steady at 6.7%.

"We thought the full-employment unemployment zone from claims was 300,000 to 325,000," Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, wrote in a client note. "Maybe we need to rethink this idea as it looks like the economy can do even better.

"What today's 300,000 unemployment claims number tells us is that current labor market conditions are normal. That means the unemployment rate will fall at the exact same speed it has ever since it peaked in October 2009," he wrote. "America is open for business."

    "the recovery started in 2009..."

Yes, the recession ended in 2009, followed by  5 years of utter failure of Obama economic policies... worst economic recovery since the 1930s...

The Government being the problem, not the solution...thank goodness the "Party of No" kept us from even more failed porkulus Government stimulus....

Of course it's going to make for a tough recovery if you suddenly discover that trillions of dollars of apparent value was just an illusion created by finance wizards to enrich themselves on our pain.

The only statistic that counts right now is workforce participation rate. It is worse now than at anytime since the carter administration.

the u-3 unemployment number only tells you that a lot of people fell off the short term unemployment rolls. There are approximately 1.7 million fewer people working since the start of Obama's 2nd term.

Funny how Ronnie-rayguns 'inherited worse economy' wasn't in a recession until 6 months after he took office and lasted for 16 months ... at the time the longest recession since WW2. You should look up the word 'inherited' because you seem a bit confused.

This latest recession was 18 months long ... 13 months under baby-Bush and 5 months under Obama.

Recession isn't the only problem economies face. Stagflation is what Reagan inherited. It was largely caused by Carter trying to cram alternative energy down our throats.

In order for your stagflation excuse to be true, the economy would have to not be growing.

According to the BEA, the economy grew 7.6% in qtr4/1980 and 8.5% in qtr1/1981.

That is, by any standards, phenomenal economic growth, the opposite of stagflation.

After Ronnie-raygun instituted his policies economic growth went from +8.5% to -2.9% qtr2/1981, that's an 11% drop in economic activity 6 months after Ronnie-raygun was in office ....

It doesn't sound familiar because it simply isn't true ... in fact it's the exact opposite of what Carter did.

... the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975, gave Presidents the authority to deregulate prices of domestic oil, and Carter exercised this option on July 1, 1979, as a means of encouraging both oil production and conservation.
The Carter Administration remained fiscally conservative during both growth and recession periods, vetoing numerous spending increases while enacting deregulation in the energy and transportation sectors and sharply reducing the top capital gains tax rate.

He followed the exact policies which wingnuts constantly push for ... and for that ya'll are attacking him ... which means you are attacking your own economic policies.

"Factual" assertions, that Carter was a conservative? Carter did some good things like deregulation of the airline industry. But otherwise, Carter was the Obama of the 70s...failed liberal policies and excuses...

"Carter, like Obama, embraced big government, creating two new counterproductive cabinet-level agencies: the Departments of Education and Energy.

In addition, Carter was an early pusher of the green agenda, declaring that the energy crisis he helped bring about was the moral equivalent of war.  He did silly things: donning a cardigan sweater, and turning down the temperature and installing solar water heating panels in the White House.  And he did dumb things: imposing price controls on gasoline, which led to shortages and huge waiting lines at gas stations.  On the plus side, there is no evidence Carter gave any solar panel company $535 million of taxpayer money.

But where Carter really mirrors Obama was in his economic policy.  Carter inherited a bad economy, just like Obama, and then promptly proceeded to make it worse by adopting Keynesian spending policies.  In four long years of the Carter presidency, the economy floundered.  Sound familiar?

, which led to shortages and huge waiting lines at gas stations.

Possible result of fact, but not supported with evidence of just how much or any other discussion of contributing factors

On the plus side, there is no evidence Carter gave any solar panel company $535 million of taxpayer money.

    Rebuts nothing high-road said

But where Carter really mirrors Obama was in his economic policy. Carter inherited a bad economy, just like Obama,

    Unsupported characterization

and then promptly proceeded to make it worse by adopting Keynesian spending policies.

    Unsupported characterization

In four long years of the Carter presidency, the economy floundered.

Failure to so much as argue for causation.

If you stuck to this two-factor 'analysis', you would say that Bush destroyed the economy and Obama largely saved it. Neither would be accurate.

    Really? Carter was a success?

gimmie some of what you're smokin.

Recession isn't the only problem economies face. Stagflation is what Reagan inherited. It was largely caused by Carter trying to cram alternative energy down our throats.

    sound familiar?

    Pretty funny  ... huh?

    Carter fiscally conservative?

there is history, then there is your imagination.

I think your doctor gave you something to take so you could tell the difference between the two.
