Isn't there some Democrat in Massachusetts that will admit to a hint of hypocrisy in trying to overturn a 2004 change in law that was designed to thwart any appointment by Mitt Romney to a possible vacancy created by a President John Kerry?  They might recall that Ben Smith was appointed hold JKF's seat until Teddy could run.

Well, its not going to cost him a ton of votes in this state. Any opponent who takes him to task on it would be taking on a pretty good amount of risk.

If Aquaman had stepped down after his lobotomy this wouldnt be an issue. But in true Kennedy fashion, he wants to circumvent the law (that he fought to change) in order to serve his own interests. What else is new.....

First off, Kennedy should have been in prision all these years and shouldn't have ever became a Senator. He should be dying in prision and smashing rocks for what he did in Chapaquidick allowing Mary Jo Kepeckne to drown and die in a car that he drove off a small bridge while drunk trapping her inside.

Secondly, who is big enough to fill his seat? Seriously, the guy is as big a whale.

Thirdly, how dare he asks to change the laws that were put into place to block the Republicans for possibly winning a Senate seat when Romney was around running the state. He should know better than anyone that laws are laws......oh wait.....got away with murder and he's a liberal Democrat. Guess not!!!!

Let's see if he gets his dying wish. I hope he doesn't get it.

What else is new? Hell, liberal Democrats lie, cheat and steal right in front of the American public now. Just look at Obama, Bella Pelosi (I vant to steal you wallet), Reed and the rest of the idiot Democrats. They don't care about the America public and what they want. Just look at the town hall meeting where anyone against the health care bill and little roudy is put on par with terrorists according to the left simply because they disagree. It is all just a power trip for them and they don't care who they hurt in the process. Kennedy is just so iconic of that it fact it is sad. I wonder what Mary Jo Kepeckne feels about him right now? Oh that's right she's dead because of him. Murderer. May he burn in hell.

Kennedy's legacy will be this Health Care reform bill.  He's affraid he will pass away before the bill reaches the Senate.   If he does, he wants to make sure that Massachusetts will still have a vote for the bill.     He doesn't want the appointee to be able to run for re-election. He only wants to make sure we still have the vote.

Democrats are already speaking out against it.  Chances are it will never happen, just try to understand that Kennedy is only looking out for Health Care.

Really? You believe this? You also believe Kennedy is looking out for you and the best interests of Massachusetts, right? ROTFLMAO!!! Too funny!

Marty Meehan ran on a term limits platform and "promised" he would not run for more than 4 terms (8 years). He even signed a "legally binding contract" to not run for that 5th term. 7+ years later he ran for that 5th term and proclaimed "I still want term limits but why should the people who vote for me be the only ones". He is a POS, Kennedy is a POS, Bush was/is a POS, Boehner is a POS, Pelosi is a POS, Reed is a POS, Snow is a POS, Frist was/is a POS are you seeing a pattern here? R or D they lie and are out for only themselves. Untill the majority realize that "my POS is no better than their POS" we will continue to get what "We the People" deserve, bad government at all levels.

Re: Kennedy wants his senate seat filled quickly

And now the accolades begin.. CNN publishes this trash to detract attention to what this POS is doing. Propaganda !!

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The death of John F. Kennedy's sister Eunice Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics for the developmentally challenged, has given rise to a wealth of news stories -- obituaries and otherwise -- about the recurring tragedies endured by what some call America's "royal family."

All of these comments are well intended but off the mark.

The Kennedys have been a remarkable family since its founding roughly a century ago by Joseph P. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. But, its members have never asked for pity or privilege. Their history has emphasized more success than tragedy. Their love of family and country stood out during some of the most cynical and selfish periods in recent American history.

Like any large family, particularly one which deservedly remained in the public eye for many decades, a large number of afflictions and setbacks, also in the public eye, was unavoidable.

Nevertheless, the members of that family have never considered themselves "royal" or entitled to special privileges. We have no royalty in America, but ever since the Adams family sent several generations to public service in the earliest days of our nationhood, other families have demonstrated similar interests and commitments to public service.

The Kennedys were taught as children and genuinely believed that American citizenship was a special privilege and honor, in return for which every citizen had an obligation to serve and help the country. Even the youngest generation of Kennedys today acts not out of a sense of entitlement but a sense of commitment.

From the beginning, those members of the family who held or sought public office had the courage to take public positions on controversial issues, not always approved by the leaders of their party, church or respective constituencies. Nevertheless, they stood up and spoke out for what they believed was right, regardless of political and personal consequences. In short, they have had a proud tradition of becoming -- not merely writing about -- profiles in courage.

Re: Kennedy wants his senate seat filled quickly

    Why surprise surprise...

The editorial geniuses at the Globe support Kennedys request to change the law on a whim.

UNTIL 2004, the Massachusetts governor could appoint someone to fill a vacant Senate seat until the next general election - as much as two years away. But the Democratic state Legislature carelessly upended that time-tested practice fearing that former governor Mitt Romney would appoint a fellow Republican if Senator John Kerry won the presidency. It was a partisan bill made worse by the fact that it made no provisions for filling the seat for up to five months before the special election called for in the legislation. Now Massachusetts and the nation face the prospect not only of losing Ted Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, but of being one senator shy while major policies are being debated and shaped on health care, climate change, restoring the economy, and defense.

The immediate matter for the Legislature is to ensure adequate representation for Massachusetts residents in the US Senate. Kennedy himself has offered state lawmakers an elegant solution: change the law to allow the governor to make a temporary appointment with the assurance of an “explicit personal commitment’’ that the appointee would not run for the office. Massachusetts would remain at full strength in the Senate, the prospect for health care reform would remain alive, and the voters would have their final say on a new senator within a few months.

Legislators are wary of the request. Even if they see the logic and want to accommodate the stricken senator, it would make them look hypocritical to hand the power of appointment back to a Democratic governor a few years after stripping it from a Republican. Even more so because Romney had proposed a compromise similar to the one now offered by Kennedy.

The image of the state Legislature, however, is a minor point compared with the prospect of Massachusetts at 50 percent strength in the Senate. Everyone already knows that blatant politics compelled the Legislature’s Democratic majority to create this mess in 2004. If anything, this is an opportunity for lawmakers to redeem themselves by putting the interests of representative government and health care reform, a hallmark of Massachusetts, above Beacon Hill politics.

One of the most powerful figures in national politics is passing. Filling his shoes will be daunting. The answer isn’t to do nothing for five months.
