Leftist cartoonist accused of "racist" depiction of Obama

A leftie gets a taste of their own toxic "race card" medicine.........

Radical -versus-radical squabble over a cartoon image of Obama. Leftist cartoonist Ted Rall was lectured by a Daily Kos administrator that “your depiction of Barack Obama as ape-like is intolerable” and insisted “blacks have been subject to racist depictions of themselves as monkeys and apes. No excuse is acceptable for replicating that history, no matter what your intent."' The cartoon was censored.

The caricature doesn't really look like Obama, certainly not the ape-like nose. Rall, who hasn’t been paid for his Daily Kos submissions, was furious at being accused of a racist cartoon:

“Anyone familiar with me and my work knows I’m not racist,” he complained. “My criticisms of the president are unrelated to his race, and to say otherwise in the absence of evidence is disgusting.” [translation: I am a good progressive, it is impossible for me to be racist!]

He added: “It should be noted that my editors at a variety of American newspapers, magazines and websites, almost all of whom are left of center politically, some of whom are black and many of whom voted for Obama, have never expressed the slightest concern about the way I draw the president.”

But no doubt Rall as a good leftie has accused conservatives of racism,  for merely opposing Obama...a leftie gets a taste of the toxic race card medicine...

    Apparently not.

Anyone not familar with this cartoonist's work should know this is typical of his style.

For example, when Rall depicted George Bush, Bush's nose had a very similar shape.

IMO, the editors at DailyKos are showing a remarkable lack of a sense of humor in this case.

    Re: Leftist cartoonist accused of

I have been censored by Daily Kos

    November 29, 2013

    Untitled-1

"Daily Kos is a major liberal/Democratic Party blog. About a year ago, the blog began running cartoons. To their credit, they paid a modest fee for them. Many alternative political cartoonists were invited; I was not.

At the time, the owner of the blog mentioned as an aside that I would be welcome, like anyone else, to post to Daily Kos. A few weeks ago, I decided to take him up on that.

Why did I post there for free? To access readers, many of whom would enjoy my work if they saw it. It was an experiment.

The experiment ended yesterday. When I went to log on, I received the above message. I clicked the acknowledgement.

Which marks the end of my experiment posting to Daily Kos. I might consider altering the way I draw a political figure for a paying client. A very high-paying client. Someone who employed me full-time.

I’m sure not going to alter my drawing style for $0.00 money.

Obviously, this is no biggie. Nothing gained, nothing lost. Given the reflexive pro-Obama/pro-DNC politics of the blog and its owner, it was probably inevitable that they’d do this. It was crafty of them to choose the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to ban me. Fewer people will be around to notice or care.

This act of censorship is notable for several reasons, however:

    1. This “liberal” blog has slammed me with the most severe act of censorship of my career. Since I began syndication in 1991, I have had individual cartoons killed. I have been fired, sometimes unjustly (like in 2004, when Men’s Healthdiscontinued my apolitical cartoons about sex and relationships because I opposed Bush and his wars in my political work, which they did not run). I have been kept out of publications where my work obviously belonged.

    But this tops them all.

They weren’t paying for my work. To the contrary, I drove traffic to them. My cartoons were routinely among their list of High Impact Posts that elicit a lot of discussion. If you read them, you’ll see that a cadre of militant Obama defenders was determined to drive me away, and they succeeded.

This is what the Democratic Party has come to: so unable to face criticism, whether from left or right, that they stifle opposing voices.

    2. Despite the politics of the pro-Obama forces, there remain many liberals and progressives who remain Democrats. I encountered hundreds of them on Daily Kos. They enjoy(ed) my work. I will miss interacting with them. Fortunately, the Internet allows them to find my work in many other places, including here.

    3. The grounds for censoring my cartoons from the site — my drawing style — are beneath contempt. Anyone familiar with me and my work knows I’m not racist. My criticisms of the president are unrelated to his race, and to say otherwise in the absence of evidence is disgusting. Here’s the cartoon in question. It should be noted that my editors at a variety of American newspapers, magazines and websites, almost all of whom are left of center politically, some of whom are black and many of whom voted for Obama, have never expressed the slightest concern about the way I draw the president."

This is Ted Rall's response to the situation with DailyKos.

Odd that CLC never mentioned that this "leftist" cartoonist was actually criticizing "Dear Leader". But then again, CLC simply cuts, pastes, then posts. No no need to read or rationalise.

    [/QUOTE]

    jed,

Yes, I found it "odd" as well. That is why I did the posts which put this "story"into context.

I also found it odd. that in jumping on Ted Rall, he did not at least read the own highlighted links in the article he copied and pasted.

If he had he would have known that this is Ted Rall's style of depicting noses...including, for example, George Bush's.

When the article he posted from "newsbusters" is told in its fuller context it takes on a very different meaning of course.

IMO, if a poster wants to continue taking shots at the left and people who lean toward the left over and over and over, he would be well served to have a better handle on the facts of the situation.

In this case, I think there is no question that it is the poster whose post blew up in his face...as opposed to the "leftist cartoonish" he was so happy to try and besmudge.

I also think it is a lesson to us all, esp. those "lefties"in the forums (said as if that was a crime), that we need to be more vigilant with the conservatives and the many posts they have been putting up such as this. This is just one case in point.

Just when I thought some of us were making some progress in actually having dialogues as of late there seems to have been a terrible turnaround with some conservatives cheering each on and whose main goal seems to be scoring points.

I, among others, have worked very hard to get the forums to a place where many of us from differtent political leanings were really talking to each other. Now, for one reason or another, the well sems to have been poisoned.

I still get a lot out of posting along the liberals here. There are many smart, educated liberals who post thoughtful coherent posts from which I learn a lot and enjoy adding to their threads.

Ay this point, with only a couple of exceptions, there are not many posts coming from non-liberals that would come close to be termed thoughtful, to say the least.

Thought the conservatives probably will not give me credit for it, I did post the full cartoon which of course used the problems with Obamacare to set up the premise with Iran.

At this point in time, I wonder if any conservative in the forum would have done the same in reverse?

jed, I do not know how you boil it all down to, but my overall feeling is one of sadness for the current state of affairs in the forums.

I know this forum will never come close to the caliper of the Oxford or Cambridge Debate society, but it surely can be a whole lot better then what it is at this point in time.

You miss the point...as you often do. I am not calling Rall a racist.

Rall was accused of being racist because his cartoon of Obama was drawn as most of his cartoon characters were, with a crude nose.

The point is, the toxic overused 'race card'  being thrown out at a leftie like Rall.. if a conservative cartoonist drew the same character, he /she no doubt would be censored and sent to cartoonists' re-education camp....

"Just when I thought some of us were making some progress in actually having dialogues as of late there seems to have been a terrible turnaround with some conservatives cheering each on and whose main goal seems to be scoring points."

Jeez, someone takes themselves far too seriously ...stop congratulating yourself....'dialogue' to you, means everyone agreeing with the failed policies of liberalism...sorry, aint happening.

Looks like a black Homer Simpson.

And in looking at the artists drawing, his depiction of Obama is very similar to his other drawings of males, save for the nose is a little bigger and the skin is brown.  My guess is the guy just doesn't draw black people well.

I was thinking the same thing.

I have done cartooning for years, mostly for fun, a couple of mine were used by the Providence Journal about 20 years ago. I had many rejected, for various reasons. I would be ashamed to call this one mine, it stinks. The character doesn't look enough like Obama , the cartoon is poorly drawn overall, and quite frankly it isn't funny at all.

There you go again. Anoer another generalization, CLC.

In other words, MSNBC pulls the race card every single day.

Do you think they have one or more people assingned to making sure the race card is pulled at least once a day in their line-up?

    CLC,

    From your 1st post.

"But no doubt Rall as a good leftie has accused conservatives of racism,  for merely opposing Obama...a leftie gets a taste of the toxic race card medicine."

    Two problems.

That sounds awfully like Rall is being accussed of being a racist while you gloat.

Also, posting "no doubt Rall as a good leftie has accused conservatives of racism" without a single source means nothing. You make acid accusations and expect to skip away without a single citation.

"You miss the point...as you often do."

You accuse me of missing your "points" and often. What is the fact that I and others have some difficulty trying to determine what point or points you are attempting to make in your posts.

You are the messenger in this case. It is up to you to be as clear and as articulate as it is possible for you to be. The fault does not lie in the posters trying their best to respond to you.

"Jeez, someone takes themselves far too seriously ...stop congratulating yourself....'dialogue' to you, means everyone agreeing with the failed policies of liberalism...sorry, aint happening."

Do not be so presumptuous as to post what another poster means. You are not a mnd reader.

First. I take the issues seriously. Not myself.

Second. Dialogue means exactly what I posted. Not the words you would attempt to substitute for my very clear meaning.

Third. Who are you to tell me what to post and not to post. At least I have as one goal the liberals and the conservatives actually agreeing on what the facts are, and then debating in as civil a manner as possible.

How many liberals have you reached out to and worked on developing a productive online relationship with in the forums?

As far as I can see, the answer is zero.

It is so much easier to post as you do...and so much a waste of time and energy for those of us who want to do more then just try and show how much smarter and informed we are as well as cut the legs out from under posters with a different point of view.

At some point, even the most patient liberals will decide enough. They can simply ignore you or go into offense mode...tired of fielding numerous posts like this.
