None of the other stuff thats talked about on this board matters unless we get the debt under control.

With all the other topics that are discussed on this board such as healthcare and Unemployment etc.Ive come to realization that none of that matters if we cant get our debt back down to a sustainable level. As of now its somewhere in the 16 trillion dollar range, The 20 trillion dollar range seems to be the breaking point where Nobody will lend us money, We wont be able to make the intrest payments on our debt and Everything as we know it will cease, Food wont make it to the stores, Gas wont make it to the pumps and we will return to living in the 1800's. So with that said, How would you deal with debt, Dont blame i dont wanna hear it so and so's fault. Give a real logical anwser as to how we deal with paying off our debt.   Looking forward to the boards responses.

Elect Mr. Romney and a republican senate and house.  Because then after November 6, we won't hear of the debt or deficit again, as we didn't the last time his team had control of all three branches of government (executive, legislative and judiciary).  And the part of our world that worries about it today won't worry about it nearly as much as the Murdoch&Ailes and EIB network sales forces have you worried over it today.  I am serious.

Re: None of the other stuff thats talked about on this board matters unless we get the debt under control.

Because it's a ruse.  Spending will not go down.

I remember, when BushII was in office - and it was a republican congress - watching the growing annual budgets of $400 billion to agriculture, $400 billion to energy, $400 billion to transportation, $400 billion to defense etc.  And annual special appropriations of $400 to defense.  And more for defense attempted.  I am not kidding.  These numbers stuck in my mind as they were reported.

We have the draconian sequestration measure, with cuts all around, agreed to supposedly to save congress from itself.  But the next time it came up for discussion, as the date approached, Rep. Boehner jumped right up to say, "We didn't really mean it about defense".

    In response to jmel's comment:
George Washington through George Bush..........debt rose to $9Trillion.  President number 1 to President number 43 and $9 Trillion acrued.  3 1/2 years of Obama.......debt goes to $16 TRILLION!!!!!   $7 TRILLION of debt added in 3 1/2 years!!!!!

Total incompetence from a moron and his party.  The OP is exactly correct.
And it multiplied in the Reagan (extended into the Bush I era if you agree that BushI got "President Reagan's third term") and Bush II eras.  But did we hear of it?  And in whose era did it swing completely around?

We actually agree as to the solution to this problem, though clearly not for the same reason, even if one of us doesn't support it: Elect Mr. Romney and a republican congress and "poof".

    1. Reduce military spending to no more than $500 billion. Savings: $270 billion/year

Which includes almost $25 million to NASCAR.

The National Debt as a % of GDP was higher in the 40s than it is now.  And the debt is only a problem if it causes interest rates to rise and interests are effectively at 0%.

There are 2 types of debt - Chronic debt and the deficit associate with the recession.  The deficit associated with the recession isn't really an issue because as we recover, that deficit will disappear.  It's the chronic debt that's an issue, debt associated with Medicare and Social Security.

Any way you slice it, Romney giving the super rich another huge tax cut will only make it worse.

Solution:  elect democrats.  History tells us everything we need to know.

The national debt as a percentage of GDP has fallen under every Democratic President since FDR and risen under every Republican since Nixon. It's easy enough to find this information if you take the time to look for it. Republicans keep calling Democrats the tax and spend party, while the GOP has become the borrow and spend party.

Are they are in cahoots with CHENEY & BUSH?

You want to know who really is pushing the buttons?  It isn't Murdoch & Ailes, it isn'[t a conservative.  It is a case-hardened socialist tyrant called George Soros.

Thats the last thing we need, You cant go to far left or right. The goal is to stay as close to the middle as you can, Usually things seem to work best like that.

I agree obama has no idea what the hell he's doing and is just trying to throw money at our problems hoping it will fix it. But at the same time GWB spent at an unacceptable level as well. Just because someone is worse than the other doesnt make it ok.

Liberals I talk to say there is no debt....that it doesn't matter, and that you can't run the federal budget like a business....(there is no federal budget, we havent had one since Obama took office, the Dems wont allow one)

In the spirit of the federal government i plan on spending 40% more than I take in during FY 2013.  I'll let you know how that works out!!!!

If you can find someone who will lend it to you at 0%, then why wouldn't you?

If you could borrow 40% more than you brought in at 0% interest rate and invested it with a return of 5%, you'd be stupid not to borrow the money.

    Absolutely no clue.

I think mitt is more capable of fixing the debt than obama is, To me obama has a "cant see it from my house" approach to the debt. Granted mitt isnt gonna be the be all end all, but I feel like mitt actually takes notice that the debt is real problem and could be a bigger problem if we just keep letting It go.

How does increasing the debt by $5 trillion over the next ten years decrease the debt?

To me Romney wants to do what Bush did, make it easier for the wealthy to become even more wealthy.  He'll treat the working class the same as Bush.  First as cannon fodder.  And then wipe out 10 years of their wealth accumulation
