Number 2 dems says medicare SS and medicaid not solvent and not on the table for budget talks now!

Is this the dems compromise? We know we MUST do it but refuse talks now???

Medicare and Medicaid savings should be part of future debt-reduction efforts, but not on the table in talks regarding the impending “fiscal cliff,” the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Senate said.

In the prepared remarks of Sen. Richard Durbin’s speech today to the liberal Center for American Progress, he writes that progressives cannot “pretend” the programs can “continue forever” without changes to ensure their solvency. But the majority whip from Illinois insists that any adjustments should come after the immediate budget is passed.

“Progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,” it reads. “But those conversations should not be part of a plan to avert the fiscal cliff.”

During the event, the Illinois lawmaker skipped over that section of his notes, which were released to the media, but told reporters that he stood by every word.

“We can’t be so naive as to believe that just taxing the rich is going to solve our problems,” he told the crowd, adding that his caucus needed to be open to issues “painful and hard for us to talk about.”

Don't you think that cuts to two major programs that the elderly and poor rely on so as not to die from untreated disease should be carefully considered, rather than simply rammed through in order to protect the ever-growing purse of the richest of the rich?

The current expanding utilization of these programs is the problem and it all needs to be on the table.

SS and Medicare as envisoned and authorized were far more limited then they are currently being managed.  SS stopped being just a retirement check a long time ago, and through SSI there are a lot of checks issued that aren't for retirement.  Medicare keeps expanding also while the supporting workforce is decreasing. As currently run it is grossly unsustainable; now there are rumors on the edges that private retirement programs 401Ks, 403B etc are being looked at for additional revenue by limiting the tax expempt status.  So now those that pay; get double screwed because the government over expanded the programs.

Where will the money to pay for these programs come from?

The unfunded liablity is in the vicinity of 63 TRILLION dollars.

Can't "tax the rich" out of that.

Funny how the whacko wingnuts are crowing about the viability these safety-net programs when the wingnuts were the idiots who were responsible for the largest, unfunded expansion of the programs since their inception with the Part D drug program.

Again, these morons try to avoid their responsibility in creating the problem and want to blame others for their own failures.

Who said we were for that?

You persist in your confusion that conservatives are republicans.

The sad news is, and the liberals don't seem to be able to see this, we are already over the cliff. The total unfunded liability at the federal government level is hovering around $100 trillion.  you can't raise enough taxes, cut enough programs to make that work.  Just can't do it.

We have passed the point where our debt can be structured and repaid.  It is just a matter of when it crashes.

Well said, lets start to help by allowing Medicare/Medicaid to negotiate drug prices - that will save tons and offset the need to cut
