I agree. This is a complete disregard for the privacy of American citizens...complete disregard. He needs to explain this and justify why the NSA decided to seek a court order for these records. he needs to stop hiding behind the Patriot Act. As if people didn't already have a profound lack of confidence in the federal government.....Who is representing the people here?

FBI, IRS, EPA, DOE, FDA - they are all being turned into tools of the politcal establishment. Party is irrelevant.

The government is too big - this is what happens when they get crazy for power.

I don't think Obama has lost credibility at all.  Look, he said he was going to do this:  Fundamentally transform this country into a socialist utpopia.  As of the latest disclosure, this phone record thing, we are there, fundamentally transformed.  The problem is, what Obama has done is indistinquishable from a police state.

The right has been warning of this outcome for years  that this path ends in a tyranical police state.  Now, we are there, and the progressives may have finally woken up.

You should double check the vote count for the Patriot Act in 2001,2006, and 2011.  You can count the number of republicans 'warning' about this outcome with one hand.

In this case, people are getting upset because the government is collecting metadata about phone conversations. They are not getting the actual conversation, just the data about who called who and when - presumably. They say they only do something with it when there is a reason to do so. OK. Do you really trust any government to stick to that, especially if they are threatened with the loss of power, income, wealth, security, associated with their position?

That is just for metadat about phone calls.

Wait until they get your medical records (if they haven't already).

Why for you is it always a republican/democrat thing?

Of course it was wrong then.

Listen:  Bush and Obama both have been party to a devolving of rights in this country.  At some point we became a police state.  Who cares when that point was?

Apparently, you do, becasue oyu want to point fingers at Bush and the Republicans while ignoringthe logs Obama threw onto this pile.  You are a partisan.

    Re: NYT:

It's even worse. The talk of twitter has been the PRISM program...government isn't just looking at your phone records...they're looking at your Google searches..etc.

Like I said..this is why we need repeal of the Patriot Act. This is why we need stronger citizen oversight..and this is why people need to be more involved in the process instead of just playing armchair quarterback.

I operate under the assumption that nothing you do electronically is completely private anyhow...but it's disheartening to have the intrusion to be so blatant. In its effort to combat the war on terror...our government has gone sadly astray. In the words of Ben Franklin.."They who give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither".

Ease up on the false equivalency.  There are similarities in the way both are currently handling the "war on terror", but thats pretty much where the similarities end.

The party of No, Know Nothing and Do Nothing has really accomplished nothing for America since Nixon created the EPA in 1970, something that current party members would equate with treason, socialism and pure evil.

Whatever good conservative or libertarian ideas exist out there probably tend to dovetail with the the social, economic and and cultural justice that personify the good ideas of the Democratic Party.

The answer to "How would I prevent attacks" in respect to terror is:

Monitor known cells and individuals domestic and abroad and continuously try to "connect the dots" between cells and idividuals. Maintain a running list of high value "targets" inside and out side the US to give added resources to security as identified.

Practice due diligence and screening of upcoming public events and potential "targets".

The problem is "we have to be right 100% of the time a person or group that wants to hurt the US only has to get it right once".
