Obama and his admin have lost all credibility on the sequestration?

This has not been a good week for President Obama’s campaign to use $44 billion in automatic spending cuts as leverage to force Republicans to vote for higher taxes. First, legendary journalist Bob Woodward dismantled the White House’s account of how the sequester was created. Now, Woodward is telling Politico that the White House responded by threatening him if he went forward with his claim.

Then Education Secretary Arne Duncan was caught in a baldfaced lie about the sequester causing teacher layoffs. On Face the Nation last Sunday Duncan told CBS, “As many as 40,000 teachers could lose their jobs. … There are literally teachers now who are getting pink slips, who are getting notices that they can’t come back this fall.” But when pressed to identify which teachers are “literally” getting pink slips right now, Duncan could only name one country in West Virginia. And when The Washington Post followed up with the director of federal programs for that county, she said that while five to six teachers were being laid off, those layoffs had nothing to do with the sequester. In fact, they were caused by a previous White House decision to cut funding for ineffective Head Start programs.

Now newspapers across the country are all running stories directly refuting Obama’s “sky is falling” Chicken Little act. The Associated Press reported yesterday that, “President Barack Obama and his officials are doing their best to drum up public concern over the shock wave of spending cuts that could strike the government in just days. So it’s a good time to be alert for sky-is-falling hype.” And Reuters reports today, “The actual amount of savings is much less – $43 billion in the current fiscal year, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That’s because federal agencies don’t spend all of the money they are allocated in any given fiscal year. A $1 billion aircraft carrier, for example, may take years to build.”

When the sun rises on Saturday morning and House Republicans will still have not agreed to new tax hikes, Obama will be forced to step up his sequestration pressure campaign. He will do everything possible to maximize the pain caused by the sequester and dramatize the efforts. Thanks to Duncan, Republicans now have a strong response: the White House is lying about the sequester and Obama’s ability to minimize sequestration’s effects.

The sooner Obama realizes he has lost, signs a continuing resolution making the sequester permanent, and moves on to the rest of his agenda, the better it will be for him.

Re: Obama and his admin have lost all credibility on the sequestration?

Journalist Bob Woodward on Wednesday criticized Barack Obama's handling of the automatic U.S. budget cuts set to take effect this week, calling the president's decision to hold back on military deployments "madness."

His comments continued what has become a running dispute between Woodward, perhaps the country's best-known print journalist, and the Democratic White House over who is responsible for the across-the-board cuts scheduled to begin on Friday.

Last week, Woodward published an opinion piece in the Washington Post - where he is an associate editor - saying the administration was "wrong" to blame the cuts on Republicans.

That drew retorts from White House press secretary Jay Carney, who in posts on Twitter and later in comments to reporters blamed the budget stalemate on Republican opposition to including increased revenues in any deal to replace the cuts.

The $85 billion across-the-board budget cuts were mandated by Congress and the White House as part of the August 2011 deal to avoid a government default. The reductions are split between defense spending and domestic programs.

Woodward, who first gained fame in the 1970s from exposing the Watergate scandal during the administration of President Richard Nixon, wrote a detailed account in his 2012 book, "The Price of Politics," of the August 2011 deal that led to the cuts.

On Wednesday he attacked Obama for drawing national security into the budget debate.

"So we now have the president going out (saying) 'Because of this piece of paper and this agreement, I can't do what I need to do to protect the country.' That's a kind of madness that I haven't seen in a long time," Woodward told MSNBC on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Obama warned of threats to Navy readiness in a visit to the Newport News Shipbuilding shipyard in Virginia, where maintenance to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has been delayed by the budget crisis.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon said it was delaying deployment of another carrier, the USS Harry Truman, to the Middle East because of funding.

Obama's decision to drag the military into the budget fight likely would not have happened in previous administrations, Republican or Democratic, Woodward added on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

Greginmeffa the GOP has been hijacked by extremists who won't allow for disagreement or finding common ground within it's own party never mind with the Democrats .  Moderate Republicans and a majority of the country knows that.

The BIPARTISAN deal Obama agreed to with republicans was that 50% of reduction in increased spending (NOT CUTS) would come from defense spending and 50% from entitlement programs.

The Republicans are saying fine stop 42.5 billion from defense increased spending and you can also decide where to reduce 42.5 billion in EXTRA SPENDING for entitlements come from!

THAT is trying to work with Obama and him saying no I now want another trillion in taxpayer money!!

Um, not true. You need to read the bill closer.  Obama determines where the cuts go withing defense.

if that's not true, then why is Obama flapping his gums about where he is going to cut?

Re: Obama and his admin have lost all credibility on the sequestration?

I think you conservatives are in for (another) rude awakening.  Senate Republicans have already filibustered  bill that would have avoided the sequester, because it closed tax loopholes like tax credits for moving your business out of the country.  Romney campaigned on closing loop-holes - how are you going to filibuster the most obvious of them, and turn around and blame Obama?

Also, I don't think anybody has forgotten that the reason for the sequester was because Republicans refused to raise the debt ceiling.

Also, I don't think anybody has forgotten that Republicans are the reason for all this debt to begin with.

Also, I don't think anybody has forgotten that Obama's big tax hike was allowing 1% of the Bush tax cuts to expire.

76% of Americans favor a mix of tax increases and spending cuts.  16% favor spending cuts alone.

This isn't going to end well for you.
