Obama's Approval Rating Now Underwater, Poll Shows

President Barack Obama's approval rating has dropped six points since he was reelected, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday.

Forty-seven percent of Americans approved of Obama's job performance, while 48 percent disapproved -- the first time his ratings have been underwater in an NBC/WSJ poll since last August.

The numbers echo the results of most national surveys in showing Obama's post-election approval boost gradually disappearing.

While bruising budget battles with Congress may have played some part, the trend is not unusual -- George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both experienced similar, though less steep, dips in approval after they were reelected.

Optimism about the state of the nation is also down, according to the NBC/WSJ poll, with just 31 percent saying the country is headed in the right direction -- down 10 points since December.

Half of Americans said they disapproved of the president's handling of the economy, a slight improvement on his numbers from February.

In an effort to please everyone, he's pleasing very few lately.

He needs to accept reality. The GOP is unwilling to work with him. The GOP will continue to reject anything he proposes, not because his ideas are bad, but because he is the one who proposed them.  That is the reality that needs to sink in.

In this day and age it is a near impossibility.  The ideological divided is huge.  The agenda of the Republicans is to stop Obama.  How does he "work" with people holding such a view?

I blame nobody but the president.

He needs to follow Bush's 'elections have consequesnces' motto, and he isn't doing that.  He should be steamrolling the GOP, not trying to work with them.

Exactly....I knew the president was in trouble 4 years ago when he wanted to speak to students in our public schools via closed circuit television and encourage them to stay in school, study hard, and go to college. The reaction by the far right was as if Stalin himself had come back from the dead and was going to read The Communist Manifesto. Some parents were asking to opt out and keep their children home that day. Try governing a country like that.

I agree with you on the elections have consequences, but Obama is not working with the GOP as far as I can see.  Throwing in the chained CPI stuff is so small as to be insigificant.

But, the GOP acts like Carrie Fisher in the Blues Brothers, the scene down in the tunnel towards the end.  Losers that they are.

Or marginalizes the ones who refuse to do so.

Hence why the congress - including the gop congress' -  approval ratings are much lower....as they wonder why they aren't reaching the concerns of a very large portion of americans.

If Obama is bad, then Congress is far worse.  They're supposed to be leaders, too.

That's true in a sense, but Congress doesn't work for him; nor do the courts.

It's more like two divisions in the same company with different leaders, different structures.

Don't get me wrong: Obama appears to be a mediocre negotiator on some issues, but he can't negotiate with what he doesn't have.  And as we've seen, even a public consensus can be ignored by Congress if they're so inclined.

I agree! Can you not agree that when dems had the "supermajority" they ran roughshod and shut out republicans and would not even allow debate on their ideas??

Both sides shut the other out at every opportunity to appease the hatred for the other side in their base.

Which side started it is just silly at this point.
