Outside of Washington, the GOP has never been stronger.

It is funny how smug overconfident liberals want to 'advise' the GOP to abandon their principles, or they will cease to exist. Such existential talk is overblown.

Democrats not so long ago lost a bunch of Presidential elections. They werent considered as 'dying'. They had a strong base in state and local offices.

    USA Today:
"Outside of Washington, D.C., the Republican Party has never been in better shape. Just look to the majorities Republicans hold in 27 state legislatures, or to the 30 states that have GOP governors.

"These governors are bright, talented and young, and they represent the diversity of America. From Nikki Haley and Bobby Jindal in the South, to Chris Christie in the Northeast, to Scott Walker in the Midwest, and Susana Martinez and Brian Sandoval in the West, they represent the modern diversity of our country while running their states successfully. [How dare this writer leave out Bob McDonnell !!]"

They also bring to the office time-tested conservative principles of lower taxes, less regulations and more opportunities for all.

And what about the Democrats? Illinois and California are examples of the downward spiral caused by higher taxes, more regulations and less freedom. In those states, the debt is mounting, jobs are being lost and the people are fleeing to conservatively run states such as Texas, where opportunities abound. All this augurs a promising election cycle throughout our state contests.

Nationally, the GOP, which holds a solid majority in the U.S. House, is in a unique position to rebound in 2014 as it did in 2010. The president, in both his State of the Union and inaugural addresses, restated his commitments to more spending, larger government and higher taxes. These are the very same priorities that were primarily responsible for the recessionary cycle we continue to experience.

Middle-income Americans discovered — when they opened their paychecks this month — that contrary to the president's promises, their taxes had gone up, and more hikes are on the way to pay for ObamaCare and the endless list of new initiatives. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stated last week that we don't have "a spending problem." Sadly, she is right. Never has a party spent so much and achieved so little.

This country is about to fall off a fiscal precipice, and this president ignores all the warning signs. For example, if interest rates today were what they were during Bill Clinton's administration, the yearly payment on the interest alone of our growing national debt would exceed $700 billion — enough to shut down our government. The GOP's future success is inevitable given the Democrats' economic mismanagement."

Eventually, the public will wise up and realize the President's massive expansion of Government is not the solution to our problems, it is the problem...

    Too soon?

No. I remember the GOP maintaining control of the house and not gaining either the senate or WH but, they didnt lose any power; Nor did the DNC gain any. How is that a schalacking?

It is funny, like they have the best interests of the GOP at heart.

Republicans: are you ready to concede yet that playing the "democrat lite" card is not going to get you anything but more lost elections? Really, can you imagine two parties playing the pander game at the same time like Rove seems to want?

You are failing at this game right now so it's time to go back to your roots and stand up for the time tested principles that made your party and this country great in the first place.

First, they should get some principles worth fighting for and worth a damm to a majority of voters (much less a majority of americans.

Maybe then, they can think about abandoning some of them.

But I love the fact that the OP needs to trumpet how so very strong the gop are outside of DC...

...all to demonstrate how utterly craven and contemptuous they are IN DC.....

And proves gopers don't want deficit reduction, not if they can complain and blame about a temporary payroll tax cut being rescinded with their approval.

Demographics say the G.O.P. is losing support.  Old folks are dying along with a lot of the "traditional values" they uphold.  Young people are a lot more liberal and the conservative culture war stuff leaves them cold.

Sure. I have no issue admitting I was wrong on the last election. We are talking about 2010 though.

And if we strike it down, it will be come more powerful than we could possibly imagine !

Actually, it is the progressives in Washington under Obama who want to strike down the concept of federalism...they want to make the state governments an afterthought, just existing to take orders from the all-powerful federal government in Washington.

Soon bailouts will be in order for the progressive failed states of California and Illinois, to pay for excessive fat pensions for unionized public 'workers"  . Efficiently run GOP states will have to bail out the Obama clone Governors failures.

Functions like education and welfare have been taken over by the federal government and botched..health care takeover disasters soon to follow...

...e.g., Gov. Jindal, whom you currently favor?  His "stop being the party of stupid" is the only cry that has remotely approached existential.

Young people are a lot more liberal, true enough ...younger people tend to be liberal, proof being that even I was a liberal in college...your unionized state education system brainwashing has done well, comrade...but the real world often results in a wakeup call.

Demographic trends look bad for the GOP, no doubt.

...but trends change, and the massive failures of progressivism under Obama will hopefully wake up anyone with a brain, which luckily includes all Americans, young, old, black , white,  Hispanic, etc.

Our entitled class of public sector folks with snouts in the treasury trough excluded, of course.

I was a conservative in college and for the first thirty odd years of my thinking life.  So much for your idiot rant about the perils of "unionized state education".  I got smarter (and kinder) later.

Massive failures of progressivism?  I don't think so.  The Reagan Revolution is no reality for the new generation, just something to read about in history class.  The roll back of progressive ideas was derailed last election and your  old timer base is dying off.  And these new kids are smart and caring people, people different from you and the other bitter enders.  Too bad, but conservatives always give way to the forces of progress... Values change, get used to it.

Gerrymandering themselves into secure districts would give the illusion of being "strong" but as noted above, GOP candidates in the last election actually lost the popular vote, which is precisely why the had the premonition to begin playing with districts in the first place.

And there are plenty in the GOP who are advising a shift in policy, hence the "civil war" already underway between the Tea Party elements and the Establishment.

Demographics will eventually undo the Republican party unless they dramtically change their ways.  I personally hope they don't change.  Its too darn fun to watch.

An aging straight white population is not going to govern the United States in the future. It is one thing to scare aging white farmers in Kansas to vote against their interests with fake social issues and alarmist rhetoric, but its quite another to persuade ethnic minorities, gay Americans, the middle class, and women and youth to vote for people who repeatedly enact actual, concrete laws that damage them.
