    Hello Posters,

I am here to work with all of you to make this forum an enjoyable place for all, and hopefully bring in additional posters in the process.
The goal is a fun and interesting forum where people can come to discuss and/or debate the politics or news of the day.
Boston.com posting rules are very simple and straightforward.

Keep it clean. No swears or porn.

Be nice. No threats, abuse, or spam.

    Be respectful. No hate speech.

Be truthful. Don't pretend to be somebody else.

Debate, but don't attack. Stay away from personal attacks.

No ads. No pushing a product or service, and no asking for money.

Don't steal. Don't post somebody else's stuff, and don't libel anybody.

We can edit. Or delete. Or ban you.

To the above, I will also add No Flaming. For our purposes, I am going with the Urban Dictionary definition since it is the easiest for all to understand and says essentially what that tech guides say. Flaming is defined as

“An online argument that becomes nasty or derisive, where insulting a party to the discussion takes precedence over the objective merits of one side or another”.
Comments that fall into this category will be deleted by me.

Please use this thread as a place to post any moderator related concerns. If you feel a comment has been removed in error, please do not hesitate to let me know. Likewise, if you feel a comment violates the Posting Policy, then please bring it to my attention. Together, we will work to create a fun, informative and lively environment in the BDC News and Politics forum.

Also, with regards to the prohibition of hate speech, I will also delete any post that contains a website link to any group which has received a “hate group” designation. I say this by way of explanation for a comment which was removed by me this morning.

Differences of opinion are always to be respected and one of the things that keeps the forum going. Please know that will always be foremost .

When you say "Don't post somebody else's stuff," I hope you simply mean no plagarizing.

As a political forum, we often start threads by partially or completely quoting an article, and posting the link.

Second, does this mean a moderator (you or another) will personally review any posts reported for abuse?

For several months now, someone or some persons have been reporting posts that do not seem to violate your TOS simply for the purpose of having them be removed. The posts would invariably be removed, apparently without review. Ultimately, this allowed the persons doing the reporting to target individuals until the individual's account got deactivated. It was also obviously obnoxious of its own accord.

The amount of spam on boston.com is incredible lately.  Today (7/23/2014), my machine locks up due to the amount of add-ons and other junk being loaded onto my screen.

Also, in the past week, my anti-virus software has blocked viruses on your site three times.

Is there some way to jettison all the crap?

Moderator, do you see that deleted post?

That was my post. In that post, I asked you whether a moderator will be personally reviewing each post reported for abuse to determine whether it actually is an abusive post, rather than automatically deleting it.

Apparently the answer is no, because asking you that question does not violate your TOS, yet the post has been deleted..

Hopefully, the person who posted it was not being a pest and was doing it to make a point.

The reason I asked it, is that the "report abuse" button itself is repeatedly abused in these forums. It is used to target posters and have their posts deleted for harassment, ultimately ending in their account getting deactivated. It works because whoever you are paying to review posts reported for abuse before deletion is not doing their job.

I have restored this comment. To answer your first question, although the BDC guidelines seem vague with regard to "Don't steal other people's stuff",  this is interpreted to mean Don't Plagiarize. If you use someone else's words, simply give them credit with a link when appropriate  otherwise some acknowledgement of who actually said what you are quoting.

With regards to your second question, unfortunately when a user hits the "report abuse" button, that information is still being transmitted directly to the outside moderators. As the transition continues, it is my goal that this is minimized. I agree that your above comment did not violate any TOS. It was a simple question and observation. It is my intention to keep a log of specific instances where this happens as this is equally disruptive to the flow of conversation. It is not perfect yet, but I hope for your help.

Again, I would ask all posters to review the TOS before reporting a comment to the outside moderators to minimize disruption of the forum. If you are unsure, please feel free to message me.

Nothing is completely anonymous in the internet world. I am sure once I can provide the powers that be at Boston.com with a list of specific examples, we can get to the bottom of the reporting problem, if there continues to be one.

I will do my best to restore comments that should be restored and protect users from being suspended who should not be suspended.

Hope this helps. It will definitely be a work in progress, but I feel a big step in the right direction.

    MM

First , how do we message you? Do you have an email address or should we leave a message on your page?

Second, do you agree when a poster is suspended, they have an absolute right to know why they were suspended?

Third, can you, will you, act as the person to go to to appeal a suspension? If so, if you do not decide to re-instate right off, would you consider suspending a poster for a period of time? Say 2, 3, or 4 weeks?

Fourth, are you a member of this forum? If so, will you continue to post in this forum?

It is no secret that the majority of posters in this forum have been extremely unhappy with the outside moderating company for a very long time. So was the Red Sox forum, but now the outside moderating company has been out of the picture and they are pretty much running their own forum and things are going much. much better down there.

Good luck for both your sake and ours.

    MM,

Below is a post that was removed from the thread whose URL is at the bottom.

    Spragueq1953 ( and others),

The comment you referenced by SisterSledge was restored earlier.

There are upcoming changes at BDC so I cannot definitively answer some of your questions in a complete manner, however here goes:

I absolutely agree that a person who is banned should be given an explanation why. I will go one further to say that except in extreme cases a user should be given a warning and a chance to modify their behavior before they are suspended or banned.

Going forward, the decision to ban or temporarily suspend any poster will be made by myself as well as BDC staff members who will be overseeing the community. Since the outside moderators are still "in play" as well, going forward, if any member of this forum feels they have been wrongly banned or suspended please message me or leave a message on this thread. I can see blocked messages as well.

If there are specific issues that you would like addressed, I am happy to act as a go-between for now. That may change in the near future as additional staff is added to manage the forums, however for now I can certainly pass on any specifics.

I am not opposed to short suspensions. I think they can be more effective than permanent bans, if that helps to answer your questions.

I may comment occasionally on a specific topic, but the majority of my comments will be related to forum moderation.

If you have a specific concern that you are not comfortable posting in this thread, please leave a message on my page.

I have no interest in correcting anyone's grammar. I can barely keep track of my own!

    Thank you, MM.

This forum is pretty much the catch all for all political threads. Nice to know if we do not, you will move a thread to where it actually belongs.

This will also help keep posters off this forum who are one issue posters about subjects such as Palestine versus Israel.

Re: Please Post any Moderator -related concerns or questions here.

Happy (Rainy) Sunday to all Politics/News posters!

I have gotten some feedback from forum posters, both directly and from reading through some of the discussion threads.

One thing I am happy to report is that I seem to be restoring more comments than I delete. This is a good reflection on the participants here.

Something else that seems to be a common theme has to do with the posting of articles. This is your collective forum and I have zero desire to micro manage, however, I thought I'd share the following for your consideration.

There seems to be a few long time posters who dislike the posting of entire texts of articles, particularly long articles. Again, this forum belongs in part to it's users but I will offer my point of view in reading through the threads and you can take it or leave it.

Between the reply feature that chronicles every single reply and comment prior and the long articles, it does present a sometimes tedious experience. Perhaps a link and a summary of the article in question along with your commentary? Again, just a suggestion.

Speaking of the "reply to" feature. When I delete a comment, I will also delete every post following which contains that comment as quoted in the "reply to" feature. It makes no sense to delete a comment just to have it re-appear in the 5 or 6 comments following. So, consider this when you are making witty reply to a comment that violates the TOS. You may just want to address the poster rather than using "reply to" and capturing the comment. I deleted a comment the other day and it pained me to delete the 2 replies to it because they were actually very good comments!

A general word of caution on sharing personal information- Please use common sense when it comes to sharing personal information, both in the public forum and through the private message system. Also, please be considerate of fellow posters who do share personal anecdotes that may pertain to a topic at hand and do not disseminate that information on other threads to other posters, especially if it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.  A good guide to follow with regards to personal  information is that if it is not your information to share, then don't share it. Otherwise it is just gossip and those posts will be removed by me. Do not post personally identifiable information of any poster on the public forum at any time.

..and please, NO Bullying! Now, this does not mean no spirited discussion. It means that this forum belongs to all users equally. There is no one poster who is "the boss". Not even me  Remember this is supposed to be FUN.

    MM

As a personal preference, I tend to agree. It would certainly make my job easier. Given that this is a discussion forum, if one is going to post cartoons or Youtube links there should at least be some commentary to go along. The exception being the political satire thread.

It is something to give serious thought to, but I don't want this forum to seem over moderated. For now, I would suggest posters simply ignore the posts that they find annoying or difficult to read because of excess. Usually this is enough to discourage that sort of behavior.

For the record, the post in response to this comment was deleted because it was simple baiting. Username brought a legitimate concern to the discussion .

    MM,

"As an adult, i'd rather read thru some harmless bullying (how bad can it get?)"

Due respect MM, you did not address this part of User9's post.

Bullying is against BDC's rules of posting...something you began this thread with.

How bad can it get? It can get pretty bad.  I honestly expected you to address that part of his post.

Cyber bullying has become a real problem nationwide. I consider it very ugly behavior. We, with your help and the BDC Posting Rules can at least keep it out of the political forums. Political exchanges tend by nature to get heated. However bullying is stepping over that line. Debate but do not attack nor bully.
