Poll: Health coverage not federal government's job

So from this I say mandate; what mandate.  The GOP lost on specific hot issues but not on it's smaller Federal Government platform.

Poll: Health coverage not federal government's job

    Politico

By KEVIN ROBILLARD | 11/28/12 7:02 AM EST

For the first time in 12 years, a majority say it is not the federal government's responsibility to ensure that health care coverage is provided to all Americans, according to a poll on Wednesday.

Only 44 percent believe the government should guarantee health care coverage, and 54 percent believe it has no such responsibility, according to a Gallup survey.

    The majority would be wrong.

The GOP is obsessed with a failed strategy that focuses on shifting responsibility for health care costs and insurance to individuals. The theory is that if individuals are forced to bear the cost of health care, they will manage to drive down costs. But individuals do not have either the access to information nor the bargaining power to drive down costs. Instead, the results of the GOP strategy will be to increase the number of people without insurance. That will, in turn, increase the number of people using the most expensive form of health care - emergency rooms - and/or waiting to get treatment until they have a serious problem that is the most expensive thing to treat.

The best way to reduce costs is to bring everyone into the risk pool and have government or employer health plans bargaining for lower costs.

HMM..  The military is done better by government.  Social security is done better.  Infrastructure is done better.  Education is done better.  There are a host of things.

Our former system of healthcare was the most expensive in the world and it didn't even cover all of the people.  High time to let government give it a try (like all other industrial nations).

    Really.

We have best military that money can buy, and of course its a government operation, but cost efficient please...............

Social Security done better??  It's on the brink of default and was designed for a growing ponzi scheme of growth; now the we have to pay the piper for past promises and its going to hurt.

Infrastructure has been grossly underfunded since the 70's and its getting worse.  The best roads are toll roads.

Eduaction better publicly?  I think it was much better when there were more private schools.

We have had the best mediacal system in the world while it was private; now we can watch it erode as the government plays a larger role.  The true costs will still go up but the government will have numbers showing that they go done; but the government never accounts for the true costs of its own labor burden and OH costs; just the actual salary costs as burden and OH is tracked on some one elses books.

It IS? Really? SS most likely won't be around by the time I'm 65. You call that better?

    Education is done better.

Really? Take private school education over public school education any day of the week.

    Infrastructure is done better.

Which is done using private companies in regards to building roads and bridges etc. You really want a DPW doing major work? Good luck with that.

High paying teacher unions with the the highest benefit packages in the world ?? Hardly !!  There are a host of things.

It's "In God we trust'  not 'In Govt we trust'

Why should we trust something as corrupt as our government.

Submit your vested interests are speaking agina.

Who said it HAD to cover everyone Comrade ??

It USED TO BE THE BEST which is why it was the most expensive.

    Please answer MY question..

You are being absurd.  You want a privately run millitary?  We contract out our national defense to some profit based company?  You want an education system that does not serve everyone?  That makes for a better country?  Government is not perfect, but it does a better job in many areas than private industry.  It serves the people not the dollar.

You say the government is corrupt.  Well, than look to yourself.  You are the government.

    Think about it.

Privatization of social security?  No way people will accept that kind of risk.

Private schools do not serve the needs of all children so it is no real answer.

And do you really want the roads and bridges owned and operated by private companies?

Re: Poll: Health coverage not federal government's job

I would dispute the question on its face.

There's an important difference between government guaranteeing health care and government guaranteeing access to health care via the private insurance model...the latter being the primary goal of any health care reform.

In the case of seniors, children, the disabled, and women, americans don't have much problem with the govt guaranteeing care.  And even then, there are caveats.

And as the tee partee frauds proved, there are a lot of people in this country with strange misconceptions about how the health care market operates, a la "keep the govt out of my medicare!"....

Ensuring access to health care is first and foremost a public health issue - and as such part of the purview of ANY government, much less a democracy.

    You cherry pick my friend.

Those are your words, not mine. I said it's inefficient.

Again, I did not say that about education. Try reading it again or ask one of your students to and have them splain it to you.

No again my dearest friend.. the government represents and serves .. only itself these days.

I politely responded to you soooo in the spirit of partisanship, please answer my question..

WHO are the working  tax paying people subsidizing?

You can phone a friend (or student) for the answer.

You choose to not understand the import of the words and ideas you use.  That is why you are absurd.

And to answer your question: taxes pay to support the nation's wants and needs.  Pretty basic concept.  No surprise you don't understand it.

Actually the best way is to get American's to stop living like glutonous fat pigs. Obesity is a BIG factor in our health care costs

And yet, even that often requires clinical treatment...

...hence the need for access to essential health care services.

There's a good reason why ads say, "consult your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen".  That's because weight loss in conjunction with regular medical treatment has a much, much better chance of success than without.

IMHO, HEALTHCARE, IN A MATURE WESTERN  ECONOMY SHOULD BE "FREE". GOVERNMENT AS I SEE IT IS FOR THE PROTECTION AND GREATER GOOD OF ITS PEOPLE.

OTHER WESTERN GOVERNMENTS COMPLY WITH THIS EDICT....THE UNITED STATES IS WOEFULLY LAGGING AND HAS NO EXCUSE.

IF THE US CAN FUND FOREIGN WARS AT ITS CURRENT RATE, THEN SURELY WE CAN PROVIDE OUR CITIZENS WITH HEALTH-CARE COVERAGE.

AFTERALL IT IS THE "WORKER" WHO MADE THIS ECONOMY GREAT!!! NOT THE WEALTHY INDUSTRIALIST!

For most it requires nothing more than not eating like a gluttonous pig and exercising. I have never consulted a doctor before beginning an exercise program. Major reason for "consult a doctor..." is CYA

Also, many who are obese HAVE access to doctors. So your "need for access to essential health care services" is nothing more than bull. I have friends who are obese. They have doctors. Those doctors tell them what they need to do to lose weight. They know what they need to do and that they need to do it but don't.

For many who are obese it's a CHOICE. That's right...a choice. These people made a choice to not exercise. They made a choice to over-eat. They made a choice to drink too much. They made a choice to eat bad foods. We ALL have control over our actions.

    [/QUOTE]

Your anecdotes are fine but hardly reflective of society at-large, i.e., the people we're talking about, i.e., the people who don't have access to basic, affordable medical care.

That your fat friends have doctors and still remain fat is irrelevant.  That you are disciplined enough to diet and exercise without medical assistance is also irrelevant (and indifferent).

In fact, yours amounts to little more than romney's elitist "47%" dig, except subbing fat people for poor people.  And in this case, the two groups overlap significantly.

Yes, some people are lazy and foolish (and some don't care).  But others are just not smart enough to know the difference.  For others, regular exercise is either a luxury or a burden and bad food is the norm.  For someone raised to understand that a gallon of soda is a) acceptable, and b) cheaper than a gallon of milk, they might have little real choice in the matter...whether it's what to eat, where to work, or how to exercise, if possible.

And then there are other impediments, mainly psychological.
