In response to UserName99's comment:
Despite how people feel about the IRS, the government ceases to function without their Accounts Receivable department doing their jobs.
If the IRS is auditing on a partisan basis, obviously that's wrong and heads should roll.
But the real scandal is the corrupt 72,000-page IRS code written by the rich and their lobbyists for the rich and their lobbyists.
Why is it 72,000 pages long ? An honest IRS code should be ten or twenty pages long.
Why should the IRS have to bother investigating fake 'social welfare' groups that are in fact very active political lobbyists ?
Because no one else in elected government cares ! - Good for the IRS !
I have a problem with the IRS having both collecting and enforcement powers. If they have an enforcement problem, call in the FBI.
But, that is hard when taxes have been individualized in terms of colelction and enforcement. Maybe push the taxes higher up the food chain, include in products, etc.
You can make tax systems that are easier to manage from enforcement as well. Not saying I like all these, but, VAT, Flat tax, consumption taxes, are generally harder to beat.
At the end of the day, I would like a federal tax system that does not take 77,000 pages, and armies of enforcers.
