Yes, liberals did much good for our country. But when you have solved some problems, can you declare victory and stop creating more "problems"? And can you recognize that some programs like Social Security are not sustainable? No, you are like bitter clingers handging on to tired old programs that are failing.

O"Dumbell of course ignores the track record of liberals when it comes to foreign policy. Vietnam, Cold War losers, Carter and Iran, Clinton terrorist attacks and no response and letting bin Laden go, Obama and Arab "spring".

The truth is that liberals have lost their way and really most of them nowadays are on a different agenda that is more like socialism.

Re: Proud to be a Liberal

Ironically written by Laurence O'Donnell, not a liberal but a self -described socialist.  His "facts" aren't facts. They're false.

"Liberals got women the right to vote."

Regarding women's suffrage, the first progressive president, Democrat Woodrow Wilson, in fact, opposed giving the vote to women. (He later changd his mind) It was the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives which put the Nineteenth Amendment on the way to ratification. And most of the states which ratified the Amendment were controlled by Republicans -- just as the first Western states to give the vote to women were Republican.

"Liberals got African Americans the vote"

Republican-led Congress passed, and Republican President Grant supported, the 15th Amendment  giving blacks the right to vote.

"Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act"...

It was liberal Democratic President Woodrow Wilson who, as noted above, institutionalized JimCrow at the federal level beginning in 1913, after Democrats in one-party Southern states had already systematically deprived African Americans of their legal, civil and economic rights during the 1880's and '90's.

    • Most Republicans voted for the Voting Rights Act of 1965, while Southern Democrats voted against it. In fact, higher percentages of Congressional Republicans voted for passage of the Voting Rights Act than did Democrats. Southern Democrats, of course, earlier signed the Southern Manifesto - and repeatedly filibustered proposed civil rights laws and other bills intended to eradicate racial discrimination and its consequences from American society.

    • School desegregation, including the use of forced busing to achieve racial balance, was actually carried out under the Republican Administration of President Richard M. Nixon. Southern Democrats fought busing and integration to the end. Republicans enforced it.

"Liberals passed the Clean Air Act"

    • The Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act were passed during the Nixon Administration also. President Nixon signed the bills into law, organized and staffed the new federal agency (the EPA) and enforced the laws.

What is the point in talking to someone that has totally lost a grip on reality? Vietnam: Lyndon Johnson's war. Iran: total mess up from abandoning the Shah to the botched rescue attempt of the hostages. We are living today with the disasterous consequences of Carter's ineptitude.

Liberals were for containing communists? Heck half of them ARE communists :)  You are all in love with Fidel and Che and Chairman Mao. You even have your own Chairman Barack.

You give Obama years to fix the economy and still blame it on Bush so you are quite hypocritical to be blaiming Bush for 911, especially when Clinton could have had him killed or captured 4 times but he let the lawyers run the show.

I like the fact that in the same post you say we're still suffering the consequences of the Carter administration, you reject all blame on an administration that took office 20 years later.

It's a two-horse race.  Iraq, 9/11, failing to capture bin Laden, backing Saddam in the first place, Beirut, Iran-Contra, Star Wars, nuclear proliferation, North Korea getting the bomb, torture, supporting appartheid, Libya part 1.  There are no 'winners', but the Dems' list has caused less harm to the country - no doubt.

It is really tough to tell a liberal these days.  Some profess to  be conservatives but bash Obama for pulling troops out of Iraq and Aghanistan.  Nation building is a real liberal thing to do yet we see posters here who think we should stay at war and spend more money and lose more lives in the process.
