Dems had just enough of their own vote against it (2) so that it wouldn't pass with a simple majority. I was also to give the left something to get all worked up over and make it a campaign issue against republicans. They play you all like a bunch of little fiddles!!

"They assert that Barack Obama has unleashed a tidal wave of new regulations, which has created uncertainty among businesses and prevents them from investing and hiring.No hard evidence is offered for this claim; it is simply asserted as self-evident and repeated endlessly throughout the conservative echo chamber."

There is plenty of hard evidence. Bruce Bartlett is a former sane conservative who went off the moonbat cliff.

The EPA’s new rules, according to PennEnergy, would be disastrous to our already flagging economy.

The analysis, done on behalf of ACCCE by NERA, relies on state-of-the-art modeling tools, as well as government data for almost all of its assumptions. NERA’s analysis projects that EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule and proposed Maximum Achievable Control Technology, coal combustion residuals, and cooling water intake requirements for power plants would, over the 2012-2020 period:
• Cost the power industry $21 billion per year;
• Cause an average loss of 183,000 jobs per year;
• Increase electricity costs by double digits in many regions of the U.S.;
• Cost consumers over $50 billion more for natural gas; and
• Reduce the disposable income of the average American family by $270 a year.
In Response to Re: REPUBLICANS KILL OBAMA'S JOBS BILL!!!! : I agree with the comments on regulation, but infrastructure improvements beyond what is actually needed, I fear is not going to help that much if at all.  What is needed is a reason for individuals to invest, spend their money.  Government infrastructure improvements don't do that.
Posted by skeeter20
What is "actually needed" is very great...in the hundreds of billions in run-of-the-mill maintenance alone.  In terms of scale, we need circa 1940s-50s levels of public AND private investment.

Of course, people can't spend/invest what they don't have to begin with.  So, either the private sector takes the chances and creates new jobs for new industry applications on their own, OR the govt helps by applying the existing ones.  The former is simply not happening on the necessary scale, so the latter must pick up the slack.
In Response to Re: REPUBLICANS KILL OBAMA'S JOBS BILL!!!! : Moody's Analytics estimates that the multiplier effect for increases in government spending is generally larger than the multiplier for tax cuts. Any additional dollar spent on permanent tax cuts adds to GDP by significantly less than a dollar. Making the Bush tax cuts permanent, for example, would add to GDP by $0.29 for every dollar of revenue reduction, according to calculations from Moody's. Infrastructure spending would add by $1.59 for every dollar spent , while extending unemployment insurance and temporarily increasing food stamps would add even more. http://www.economy.com/mark-zandi/documents/Small%20Business_7_24_08.pdf

Your source is Moody's?  Didn't you trash Moody's a while ago for their downgrade forcast?  Funny you lean on them now.  Oh, well.

Not comparing to tax cuts, but now that you mention it, how do you reconcile that the multiplier effect for government work is not even measurable according to some economic studies?

Moody's pegging the multiplier at greater than 1 is the first sign that they have a few screws loose.

No matter how hard you try, the truth is simply this:  Government spending can accomplish much, but one thing that is hard is to use it to fix an economy in the current environment.  Now, if the government takes over more industry, and increases regulation, then the multiplier effect for government might become larger than private industry, but it will still be below 1.

Re: REPUBLICANS KILL OBAMA'S JOBS BILL!!!!

"Spending on infrastructure and basic services (police, fire, school) creates more than just good public sector jobs."

"Basic services" has always been a function of local and state governments.
The all powerful federal government divvying out stimulus money to favored jurisdictions for police and fire destroys our federal system....Washington dictators deciding what is needed, instead of local governments.
Then,  if any state Governor wants to criticize Obama...no stimulus for that state, and/or  the Gov is a "hypocrite" for daring to speak against the Nanny State goodies.
Any public sector job is "good" for progressives..the more they steal from the private sector, the more power to the federal Government..

The Republicans aren't going to do anything now, for them the finish line (Nov 2012) is in sight, just 13 more months of gridlock and they can try to take over the White House.  Democracy at its very finest.

Say what you will about Obama's jobs bill but it is a tangible attempt.  The last republican answer to job creation was extending the Bush Tax cuts, well we did that, so where are all the jobs that they promised?  Oh, thats right, it has been proven for decades that the "rich people with more money are job creators" argument is total B.S.  They will now have more money to donate to the GOP in the coming elections though.  Democracy at its very finest.

Sure....kinda like spending 450 million on Solyndra was a 'tangible attempt'. Spend first, ask questions later?

"rich people with more money are job creators" argument is total B.S."

So...poor people create private sector jobs?

The spending that Obama wants to do is for bridges and other road projects.  When they are completed, then what??

You are paying attention with your ears blocked and your eyes shut.

Obama knows nothing about how our economy work.  How else do you explain his failures??

By the way...government contractors are laying people off because of defence spending cuts....are you suggesting we increase defense spending??
In Response to Re: REPUBLICANS KILL OBAMA'S JOBS BILL!!!! : - Agreed that so far, tax cuts don't work, so "appropriate" is undefined at best. - Spending on infrastructure and basic services (police, fire, school) creates more than just good public sector jobs. More people working = more demand for private goods/svcs = more money for private companies... And that is ignoring the many private contractors who actually perform the improvements and employ many people.  (Also why extension of unemployment benefits is one of the most direct, immediate ways to boost demand...usually for real small businesses.) - I would also expand the notion of "infrastructure" to mean much more than just roads and bridges.  It should also - with all priority - include our terribly outdated energy grid and supply network, communications (e.g. broadband/fiber optics), our aging transportation fleets (even air), etc....
Posted by MattyScornD
Public spending should be on public infrastructure, not private power grids or communication lines.  But public infrastructure includes transportation, water supply, storm and sanitary sewers much of this infrastructure is 100 years old within the 128 belt.

I'll all for long term investment in our "public" infrastructure but I'm not interested in stimulus money being used to keep additional public sector; teachers, DPW, public safety etc. employees working.  Local governments need to cut their forces just like businesses do and live within budgets.  The public sector needs to make 'value added' based decisons on direct employees vs. contract employees.
