Social security was robbed by our govt so if, you want to blame someone for it being broke and people losing; the only logical blame goes to the government!!

The same govt some people want to make larger and more powerful.

Right.  It's that evil Fox News.

The republicans will lose elections as long as they act like Democrats.  Conservatism is the success of the future.

Exactly.  The money paid into social security is GONE.  No lockbox.  OUR government lied to us, took the money, promised that we were accruing benefits, then SPENT THE MONEY ON OTHER THINGS.

Medicare and Social Security: current unfunded liablity, @ $65 trillion.  The money is no longer there.

Dude, you are seriously fvcking delusional.

Where the fcuk do you get these ridiculous numbers?

Do you just sit around making up crap that sounds good to those little voices in your head?

No wonder you're such an ideological imbecile, you just make up stuff to fit your whacko wingnut alternate reality.

     -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NPV (net present value) of Social Security's unfunded liability over the next 75 years is $5.3 trillion.

Medicare has two main components, and the Medicare Trustees' Report tracks figures for them separately. Hospital Insurance (HI), or Medicare Part A, helps pay for medical care for the elderly and disabled. Supplementary Medical Insurance consists of Part B (care for the elderly and disabled who have voluntarily enrolled), Part C (private 'Medicare Advantage' plans), and Part D (subsidies for prescription drugs).
Due to the automatic funding of the other Medicare programs, the HI program is the only one with an unfunded liability. The NPV of the unfunded liability of HI over the next 75 years is $13.4 trillion.

    That's $19 trillion..... over 75 years!

You are only a freakin idiot by $46 trillion.

Geepers, just stop with the whacko wingnut, wild-eyed fvckin bullshiite.

Wasn't much of a list Rubie... a non starter answer.

Perhaps they have NO plan, no list and moreso no motivation to either freeze or reduce spending.

The point is that cuts have always been on the table with the Dems but tax increases were forbidden by the G.O.P.  The G.O.P. had Norquist's pledge to uphold.  The Dems had nothing similar.   That is why we are on the fiscal cliff now.  You choose to ignore this.  No surprise.

Re: REPUBLICANS NEED TO FACE REALITY

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll released today shows that Americans strongly favor tax increases on the richest Americans as a way to avoid the fiscal cliff. At the same time the poll shows Americans strongly oppose raising the Medicare age as part of any compromise. The polling numbers lend support to the position of President Obama and congressional Democrats who favor tax increases over entitlement cuts as part of any deal to avoid the January 1, 2013 deadline for the fiscal cliff.

According to the survey, 60 percent of Americans favor raising taxes on those making over $250,000, compared to just 37 percent who were opposed. However, 67 percent of Americans opposed one idea to raise the minimum Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67.

Re: REPUBLICANS NEED TO FACE REALITY

Social Security does not contribute to the federal budget deficit. It is funded by payroll taxes, and currently enjoys a $2.7 trillion surplus, enough to fund the program without any changes until 2033.

the Trustees projected that combined assets would be 347% of annual cost at the beginning of 2012 and 272% at the beginning of 2021.

RAISE TAXES ON THE MILLIONAIRES AND BILLIONAIRES PLEASE JUST TO GET IT OUT OF THE TALKING POINTS.

All we're saying is its NOT a solution!!!!!

It doesnt put a dent in our debt and what it MAY or may not do for the economy is negilible!

We will still run 100's of billions of dollars in deficits every year instead of a trillion dollars+ every year!!

    WE NEED REAL SOLUTIONS!!

Look on the bright side.  A tax cut for the 98% is also a tax cut of the same amount for the wealthy.

Re: REPUBLICANS NEED TO FACE REALITY

I love the argument by the righties about why the rich should have their tax cut extended.  It's because a tax increase on the wealthy isn't enough to close the deficit.  That isn't an augument for extending tax cuts on the wealthy - it's an argument for not extending the Bush era tax cuts period.

Newsflash - if you increase Government spending (Bush era prescription drug benefit that everyone voted for) and you have to get more revenue from somewhere else.  A major increase in Government spending has to be accompanied by a tax increase if you want to avoid a deficit.

Pick three:  Social security, medicare, defense spending, low taxes

If you pick low taxes, defense spendig, medicare, you have to gut social security.

Of course the solution is:  increase taxes a bit, cut social security a bit, cut medicare a bit, and cut defense a bit.  Isn't that pretty simple?

    Compromise?

And what will Obama cut in his spending to meet tax increases?

This President's spending has increased the national debt 5 trillion in 4 years that is more debt accumulated in that 4 years then all of the previous presidents combined.

Obama's spending is the problem raising taxes will only give him more to redistribute.

And finally Obama has an idea about how much he wants to raise taxes has he submitted a plan to the American public on how he plans to cut programs and spending?
