    Didn't just outsell the Vette.  It outsold nearly half of all car models sold in the US.

    As predicted, the massive failure of the Chevy Volt has been redeemed, by sales to the Government !

    Government purchases of GM vehicles rose 32% from last year.

    So the Government is bailing out-- the failed GM auto bailout!

    The Volts purchased by the Pentagon may be more cost efficient than drone missiles...when donated to Al Qaeda, the Volt will randomly  will catch fire and blow up spontaneously...

    "This is not the first time we've heard of the US government boosting the automaker's sales figures by buying up GM vehicles.  Already, we know that the government's purchase of GM vehicles rose by 79% in June of 2012, so there's no telling how much money the feds are dumping into buying GM at this point.  In the last 3 years, this tactic seems to have been commonplace:

    The Pentagon's massive car-buying scheme is the latest example of government trying to help GM raise its sales volumes. The General Services Administration of Las Vegas fame purchased 100 Volts in 2011 for various agencies.€

    Sadly, it still seems as if the automaker is failing, especially in regards to the Chevy Volt.  The Volt has been the Obama administrations pride and joy.  However, it seems to be costing GM almost $50,000 for every Volt they sell.

    To put that into perspective, if the US military is buying 1,500 Volts and GM loses $50,000 for every car they sell, then GM will have lost $75 million over trying to inflate a statistic to make the O Team look competent --all through the use of American taxpayer dollars.  We are still bailing out GM.

    If indeed the Volt is a “failure,” as some of its critics have contended, we’re sure there’s several auto executives out there that would like many of their slower-selling models to suffer the same fate.

    Still, the Volt’s ranking placed it ahead of industry stalwarts like the Audi A6, BMW 7-Series, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and it outsold most hybrids including the Toyota Prius plug-in, Honda Civic, Kia Optima, Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX 450h.



    Nice spin....sorry to say, though, besides the Government, guess who else is buying thousands of Volts to inflate sales figures?

    Why it is Obama's favorite big corporation that pays no US taxes ...you know, the one just just got a special interest tax break pencilled in the fine print  from Obama,  worth billions,  in the fiscal cliff deal. The ability to offshore its tax liability! The same evil thingie that Mitt Romney may have done.

    Only in America can people that describe themselves as true patriots trash one of our greatest and most important industrial powerhouses. GM and its suppliers provide millions of jobs from steel mills to the post office to ad agencies. Talk about cutting your nose despite your face!

    Much of the motivation behind these attacks is the view of the wingnut base that climate change is somehow a vast conspiracy of scientists throughout the world. But even if you accept such paranoid fantasies about climate change, the Volt also beneficially helps address two other issues that the GOP pretends to care about - energy independence and higher gas prices. Given all of the rhetoric that the GOP is throwing around blaming President Obama for high gas prices, you would think the GOP would be happy to embrace an innovative, American-made technology that helps reduce our dependence high priced gas and foreign oil.

    Attacks on the Volt are a prime example of how so much of today's conservative agenda is simply about attacking liberals.

    No one in their right mind would pay 50K for this turkey, even with the massive $7500 rebate subsidy...

    The actual cost to GM is estimated at 90K per vehicle!

    Bob Lutz on the real cost to make the Chevy Volt, Reuters article "preposterous"

    The Reuters report cited "independent analysts" who claim the R&D cost GM spent to develop the Volt added up to the $1-1.2 billion range. Dividing that amount by the 21,500 Volt's sold so far means $56,000 per Volt was spent in R&D costs. Further, other analysts have estimated the cost of materials to build the Volt is in the $20-32,000 range making for a total cost of $89,000. Because the Volt's MSRP is just shy of $40,000, this line of reasoning says GM is eating at least $49,000 of loss for each Volt that is sold.

    This line of reasoning must appear logical to some, considering the number of articles and blog posts repeating these numbers verbatim. However a moments of thought and one realizes this line of reasoning is, as Bob Lutz wrote, preposterous. It is the sort of flawed reasoning that led to the "report" last winter claiming the Government had subsidized GM to the tune of $250,000 per Volt. Both claims contain the same kind of flaw.

    Namely, it is incorrect to amortize a fixed cost like R&D or building a factory over the first year of production. As Bob Lutz put it in his Forbes blog posting "That's like saying that a real estate company that puts up a $10 million building and has rental income of one million the first year is "losing" 9 million dollars, or several hundred thousand per renter."

    Lutz then went on to explain the calculation a car company uses to determine the profitability of a given car program. To calculate the "gross margin" one subtracts from the "selling price" the "materials cost" and "labor cost". In other words the gross margin subtracts the actual cost of parts and labor out as the first order approximation of the profit. Additionally there are fixed costs such as advertising, general administration, research & development, and building factories. Fixed costs are amortized over the whole lifetime of the car program, and are not amortized over the first year of production.

    The R&D dollars spent by GM to develop the Volt will obviously apply across all model years in which the Volt is sold. Additionally the technology developed for the Volt is going into other GM vehicles such as the Cadillac ELR and the Gen 2 Volt.

    DETROIT - Reuters' estimate of the current loss per unit for each Volt sold is grossly wrong, in part because the reporters allocated product development costs across the number of Volts sold instead of allocating across the lifetime volume of the program, which is how business operates. The Reuters' numbers become more wrong with each Volt sold.

    In addition, our core research into battery cells, battery packs, controls, electric motors, regenerative braking and other technologies has applications across multiple current and future products, which will help spread costs over a much higher volume, thereby reducing manufacturing and purchasing costs. This will eventually lead to profitability for the Volt and future electrified vehicles.




    All this spin from Obama poodle Bob Lutz. Amazingly, he tries to debunk the figure, but no mention of what he claims the actual figure is..OK Bob maybe it is 40K loss instead of 70K loss...isnt that wonderful !

    GM has the same "transparency" as the Obama Administration

    GM wont say exactly how many of its "tripled" Volt sales are for Government, GE and/or given away with dirt cheap leases...

    GM wont say how much it cost to build each Volt...

    The amout of money lost by GM on the volt is misleading.  All new cars are money losers because of how the R&D costs of the car is depreciated.

    As far as the volt being bought by the military - and?  They have to buy something.  And imagine how much the AR-15 would cost had it not been for the military basically paying for the start up and R&D costs.  If the military can do 1/2 for the Volt for what it did to the AR-15, then I'm all for it.
